people have an art blocks because they are not allowed to draw without a reason

    i think drawing is easy.
it's when you're supposed to improve, to learn, to execute something that needs to be good that makes drawing difficult.

Great and relaxing vid as usual man. I've been suffering from depression insomnia and have been on anti depressants for about 3 weeks now, makes it very hard to build a schedule for drawing and commission work, since i'm waking up at random times, can't sleep sometimes and can't control my energy as much as i'd like to.
I'm gonna try to keep in mind what you said about drawing itself, as an act being easy, it's definitely all the mental baggage from it that's the hard part.
Daily-sketching has helped in that regard to an extent since it's forcing myself to draw and upload at-least one drawing a day, even if the "quality" isn't up to what i'd consider my standards, but it's a good exercise in just noticing how little people care or rather judge your personal art's quality, at worst, it just get's ignored which happens to even some of my fav pieces I've put out anyway.
Commission work is harder to keep that in mind with though since there is a certain level of quality that would be expected, still working on how to juggle that.

A very good read. Glad I could help you out. I'll have to make a couple episodes focusing on how all of this subtly changes when you're working for clients.

Im glad to have found a lot of ways of interacting with my art that is basically just always fun and free from stress. If i ever need a break from the way im thinking about my path of art ill just draw pokemon-like designs with no planning all day and just have fun.

Steven, even though you might not see this. But thanks for making this video. I get depressed sometimes. I was even contemplating suicide but I try to keep on living. This video interested me and hopefully I'll get back to drawing today.
    Thanks brother.

at this point if my bad art is caused by my depression or my depression is caused by my bad art. meaning I don't know wether to go to a therapist or to take drawing lessons but since we have free health care the therapist is gonna be my first stop

I'm teaching Math this year and work day and night to just survive my job. I barely have time to draw or paint anymore. I'm very exhausted when I have free time and I rest because I don't want to get sick either. I had lots of free time the last three years but not anymore. Life throws you different challenges everyday. I'm glad that last three years when I had time, I didn't waste it and learned to paint. I waited 10 years for that 3 year opportunity. For anyone out there having the same problem, just chill and savor what you got. If one thing, not having a chance to do art, makes me appreciate it even more and cherish it.

I guess, what let one think that way... “i have to be productive. I have to paint something awsome...“ is our society in some way. Many people seem to take it for granted, that artists/ creative people have allways the correct solution for everything. Are allways hyper productive etc. Guess what? We are NO half demi gods who are imune to lives ups and downs. Where all just humans after all. Some times, you just have to say “fuck it! I am not productive now. So what? Does not make me less worth than you.“ Burn out is nothing in ourselfs. Its forced by the world around us, that makes us belive, youre less worth, when youre not doing things 24/7. Dont let it on you. Sometimes, just say “fuck it“ and listen to whats good for YOU, not the people around you. No matter if its your CEO or someone else, who thinks hes above you and slavery is still a thing.

I got the same conclution some years ago (about the act itself being easy). I was making a drawing of a parchment paper in a comic, drawing all the little broken lines for the edges, and my pianist friend was looking at me drawing (he's a moooonster at playing impro Jazz) and he said ''you're just making tiny marks, actually, but when you zoom out, you see the whole thing and it works'' to what I said to him ''well... you do the same on the piano. You just hit the keys... but you do it in the proper order'' he noded, satisfied and we both got that same feeling. The act itself is not complex at all XD

My rut has been for maybe 8 years or so. I actually have had professional art jobs, but recently made the move to UI art so i can stay in the games industry and still design, but i do miss drawing and painting. I come back to it every now and again and it always feels horrible - so i drop it again. I wonder if it'll every stick again. If not, i'll stick to my new path - its still a good job.

I wish a drug existed so I could focus when I want to focus. that sounds like a straight up superpower. I find I work best in school because I feel stimulated by doing something instead of brainfree exercises, but when i come home i cant even hold my pencil sometimes, it just rolls out. Am i just too undisciplined? How do I force it if my brain is not cooperating?
