Not so much married, but they did send minor sons (those not the heir apparent) to become monks. Not too surprisingly, many of these high born aristocratic sons were often made very high ranking monks and even abbots fairly quickly.

The reason why Nobunaga killed the monks was that they kept making themselves a pain for him. No less than three times he defeated them on the field, chased them to their mountain sanctuaries, and got them to verbally agree not to do that again while he was alive. When they joined the Azai yet again, Nobunaga just figured "wait... they are only protected by the Emperor's orders from a time when Emperors had power. I can just kill them all and the Court can't actually punish me for it. Heck, they might even pardon me just to pretend they still have power." And so he killed them first in a sneak attack (he learned the hard way against a different monastery when his soldiers were cut down by _gun monks_ how a direct fight was not in his favor).
He wasn't a nice guy, for even the Jesuits whom he protected have a long list of examples of his abrasive personality. He wasn't against religion, he actively promoted the Kami beliefs. he might even been Buddhist since as you mentioned the Japanese didn't view the two beliefs system incompatible. He just wanted the religious people do study and do what you said was stereotypical of them rather than interfering with his wars.
An ironic twist is that Nobunaga thought the Catholics were OK since although they had an organized religion, but this "Pope guy" surely wasn't in charge of an army right? Well... I think he might have been more critical if he realized the Papal Sates, while a shadow of its former self, had more political power than Japanese Emperors.

While true, I do seem to keep finding people that he barbecued an awful lot of women and children. Even if it was a case of the warrior monks taping babies to themselves and daring Nobunaga to strike them, it still isn't exactly a good look. We did get a badass retort from Nobunaga out of it about how, if Takeda Shingen was the protector of all under heaven, then he was the demon king of the sixth heaven

The Shinto Religion became the state religion. After the end of World War II, the co-existence between a lot of Shinto Shrines and Buddhist Temples return.

I also suspect that people learning of Buddhism throughout the ages just called the entire Indian subcontinent, including India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka just “India” or some equivalent in their own language, but yes Siddhartha Gautama was born in what is Nepal today.

All branches: "To achieve salvation you must accept Jesus Christ as your savior. Yes, but our branch is the right branch! No! OUR branch is the RIGHT branch!" They star an war that killed hundreds of thousands...

There was actually a legal case done when Cyrus the great sent the Jews living in Babylon back to Judah and allowed them to rebuild their temple. The returning Jews didn't want the help of those who remained living in the area.
Though to be fair the ones who were able to stay in the religion ended up polytheistic who worshipped Yahweh in a parthenon so... there is that.

A controversial priest in the Kamakura period was Nichren Daishonin. He basically told the japanese government that they were not practicing buddhism correctly and predicted calamities that would befall Japan if they didnt stop. All of which came true. Including the 2 foreign invasions of Kublai Khan. He believed that men and women were equals and could both attain enlightenment. As you can imagine, Nichren had many enemies. He was exiled twice. They tried to execute him once, but a shiny orb appeared and stopped his executioners from killing him. A very interesting life as far as Japanese buddhism is conerned

Hey Linfamy, Love you work, awesome work and fun to watch!! Keep it up!!
However, I would like to point that you have an inaccuracy with the term Sohei. I will not go into too much depth within this comment but the term is as inaccurate as the Ninja. I would highly recommend you Check out these 2 books. It will make more sense when you get to talk about the Ikko Ikki monks..
The Teeth and Claws of the Buddha by Mikael S. Adolphson

    5:40.
    Well.
    To be fair.
The non egualitarian philosophy derived primarely from confucian ideas.
Daoism sees the feminine and masculine aspects of the universe as equals, because they need each other.
In fact, Daoist teachings are against confucian ideas, and against the idea of a complex state and society, because society took away the freedom from humans.
Daoism is very anarchical in his core teachings.
Confucianism instead, is very stoic and strict. Confucius ideas were not religious but social.
He beleaved that humans need laws and strict regulations to achieve order and balance.
The women staing inside the house and serving da man was one of these teachings.
Daoism spred the idea of god worship in chinese budhism.
Before budhism came to China, it was mostly non-teistic, they believed that supernatural entities exist, but that you should not worship them because....
    I dunno...
    Budha is cooler?
    Soo yeah.
    The misoginist elements.
    All confucian.
    No hate on Confucius.
He had good intentions for his beloved country.
    *PS:*
    Notice.
Buddhism, since it came from India, already had many deities who were directly taken from hindu mithology.
The greatest example of this is TARA. Who's considered a bodhisatva in buddhism, and a manifestation of Parvati in hinduism.
When buddhism spread torward China, passing truought Tibet, many local deities were adopted and turned into bodhisatvas or other entities.
BUDDHISM ALREADY HAD MANY DEITIES SINCE THE BEGINNING.
BUT THEY WERE CONSIDERED INFERIOR TO THE BUDDHA AND, BECAUSE OF THAT, NOT THE ULTIMATE SOURCE OF SALVATION, THIS BEING THE CAUSE OF THEIR LESS IMPORTANT WORSHIP.
Before spreading torward China, the worship of deities was way less important than the teachings of the Buddha.
It was only after entering in contact with Daoism, and chinese folk religion, that the worship of deities alongside bodhisatvas became a popular act.
Buddhism started to incorporate many folk deities to attract more followers.
    Basicaly.
Instead of a violent conversion, they decided to fuse with the already existing religions, soo that the people would change their ideas gradualy and peacefuly.
They eventualy did this with other asian religions.
    Like shinto.
    Also.
I would like to make you notice that, even if Confucianism did spread more misogenistic ideas, some of these were already present in buddhism.
In the original buddist path, females were not allowed.
That's because they were considered a source of corruption, daughters of a demon...
If you were a woman who desired to become a buddhist and achieve salvation, you would not be allowed to it.
The only way for a woman to obtain salvation was by practicing the duddhist teachings and be reborn as a male in the next life...
    Yeah...
    Kinda scummy...
But they eventualy regected this dumb shit.

Hermes Carraro I would just like to say that Buddhism was never non-theistic. The original Buddha probally acknowleged the Hindu pantheon, but he considered them all to be ultimately impermanent. That is, they too were bouns by karma and would ultimately be reborn as something else.

    • @hermescarraro3393

      Yes.
      That is what I said.
      There were gods etc.
But the Buddha advised to not focus on them cause they were flawed, hence why not a proper source of salvation, wich could only be achieved by humans efforts alone.
