As an American I didn't realized how much wealth the UK has. Today I am very interested in continuing to learn about how the UK got so rich. If you enjoyed the video feel free to leave a comment, like, or subscribe for more!
The UK being the centre of time zones is not coincidence, it was arbitrarily decided by the UK, in the time of the empire, and it's specifically centred on Greenwich, hence GMT (+0) which stands for Greenwich Mean Time
That GMT decision was made in the US at a meeting, and it was decided by an American president - I forget which one. There's a video all about it - and the International Dateline, which in itself, is a far more complicated 'line' than I had realised before watching that video (sorry, I don't recall the name or the link)
@@brigidsingleton1596 Incorrect, the decision that the US itself would recommend the use of GMT as the standard was decided in 1884 by a US president, GMT had been in use by most of Europe for several decades before this. It was officially adopted in Europe in 1847, becoming widespread by the middle of the 1850s.

"Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose" to quote the late John Denver at a show of his at the London Palladium in the 1970's - I was there!! I can't be right all the time and if wrong will gladly apologise. Sorry I was obviously mistaken.
We didn't dominate, loot, impose, or capture. We traded. Often we were begged for trade and defence treaties. We had the foresight to plant oak forests for ship building.
i mean we definitely dominated looted, imposed and captured on top of trading, often as a means of opening more trade options or securing goods for trade
look at most of those countries on their own, they can’t even provide toilets for their population nearly a 100 yrs later

You should react to why Britain is the centre of the world. It's really interesting it talk all about the time zones and why our map has the uk in the middle.
If France had got its way at the international conference to set 0 deg. Longitude it would have ran through Paris but they were outvoted. The time zones have kinks in them so that some countries are all one time or the same day if 180 deg. runs through them.
Zero degrees longitude (GMT) running through Greenwich, London, UK wasn't an accident, we set it there 😂because it suited us well.
However, in 1884 in Washington, D.C. an international conference recommended use of the Greenwich Meridian (GMT) as the international standard for zero degrees longitude.
It's not luck, we the brits put that line there, hahahahaha. psyche.
Was a conferance in usa of many countries, but CANZUK+ decided. It does put the international date line down, moatly sea. GMT now referred to by usa as, universal time. 3D space if from Plymouth.
the O line, is grenwhich mean (GMT) time, where the world takes its time from, yeah we put it there, during the empire days, but it still stands, there is a great video about it, and why, it will make sense, you should look it up
I didn't realize that successful businessman and publisher Michael Bloomberg has a high rated BREAAM building in London. I just discovered this over the past weeks. So, NYC business is in London as well and I would assume that London business is in NYC as well. Bloomberg's building is beautiful too! One of the most sustainable in all of the UK and Europe. Also, for those NFL fanatics, the Jacksonville Jaguars regularly plays in London and once, the owner, considered relocating the Jaguars to England. That would have been fascinating and unprecedented for professional American football.
Not so rich as American government didn't come to our help during WWII out of the goodness of their heart, we had to pay even though they stole the Nuclear weapons and now say they invented them (although is that something to gloat about?) we paid our loans back unlike all other countries, last payment in 2006 and that's why it took us a long time to rebuild our country.
Yes we are known for paying back are bills to other countries
UK debt for , lease lend, to usa was finally paid off in 2012.
@kathryndunn9142 is y uk has very high rattings
Please tell me about "The UK invented the atom bomb". It sounds interesting.
@hansmarheim7620 i believe it was joint, usa uk & spits where very close together.
Yes, much of our wealth came from minerals, but also fish, farms, and wool. The speaker of the House of Lords still sits symbolically on a wool sack.

There’s a saying “London looks after itself . Which generally refers to the City of London and financial sector
London, New York, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Singapore are global financial hubs.
London was the first financial centre in the world and still the number one.
@@valeriedavidson2785 In 2023 London had largely recovered from Brexit and had moved up 13 places in rating cf NYC's 3 places. Wouldn't surprise me if London passed NYC later this year. Tyler, you have to learn that Bigger isn't necessarily Better.
That's a lesson most men - not just Tyler / Americans - need to learn...🤔🏴🙂❤️🇬🇧🖖

We're in the centre of the world map because invented world trade.

Re: Timezones - “That’s just sheer luck!”
Not really, when you decided where ‘Mean Time’ was going to begin from.
Wind & wave power.
New york and london habe the top 2 stock markets in the world and often trade 1st place.
The new york stock market is for a lot of the newer economic stuff (investing in startups, shorting stocks and all that fun stuff) while london is where all the old money goes.
0⁰ londitude was set by a conferance in usa
I would read later comments before you say that too loud. It seems you’re mistaken.
we decided where time was to make ourselves the centre of earth
Scottish-Canadian Sir Sandford Fleming first recommended the standard to the Royal Canadian Institute in 1879, and he was instrumental in convening the 1884 International Prime Meridian Conference in Washington, at which the system of international standard time was adopted. He originally created the concept to solve time-keeping across Canada while building the Canadian Pacific Railway. Until then, time was uniform across countries, including Canada; therefore, it would be 12 noon at the same moment no matter where in Canada. He divided the world into time zones and the rest is history. Chimo
The UK paid off its debt to the USA for equipment in 2022, as a result we now have £3 billion more for our economy.
For purchasing tanks, building tanks, supply of ammunition etc.
We still have massive debt
I've travelled to every corner of the globe (86 countries across all continents) and can safely say that London is the most international, diverse, city in the World.
The City of London is a, city state, pays £90billion to UK yearly.
Really that much and I call London as I'm in the north 😂
@kathryndunn9142 CoL is known as, the square mile. Is the City State. The King is not allwed in unles let & escorted.
The brits have been paying astronomical prices for road tax and it doesn't even go on the roads .In uk there is tax in everything fuel sugar tax council tax all luxury goods are taxed and they were talking about a processed food tax if parents leave you a large amount of money in there will you get death tax it really is like king john and Robin hood.
The UK pretty much created the modern world. We developed most control over the oceans, we set the time, we invented work (industrial revolution), we purposefully made London the business capitol of the world etc etc. all of this was made possible because of our geographical location.
Yet since the pandemic, most of us struggle to pay bills and put food on the table
Not luck… the dominance of Britain on the world stage meant that it became the centre time zone from which all are set at Greenwich (GMT).
London is the Financial centre of the World and has been since the 1800s!
the reason britian is in the middle of time to trade with other natons is because they created modern standard time or greenich standard time putting great britian ias the centre of the earth ,, you should check out british comedian al murray the pub landlord he talks bit about this ,, he is very intelligent a oxford history major and music minor graduate i believe ,,is comedy skit is a portraying the average englishman ,, oh and it was in canada by a canadian that standard time was created
Low business taxes. Low business interference by gov
The roman empire became a church, The British empire became a world Bank/financial capital. London is also disproportionately wealthy compared to other UK cities. As a rule of thumb in most developed countries, the wealth of the Largest city(usually capital) = 2nd plus 3rd largest. In the UK that's Birmingham(B) and Manchester(M). As it stands London is a little over 2x(B+M) instead.
You're forgetting the American $30 Trillion Debt though right? 🤕
We wrote the maps
We did NOT loot our colonies - we traded with them. We invested vast sums in America and most of our Empire. Your own Thomas Sowell said that the British Empire raised living standards everywhere it went.
It definetly did a lot of looting
You shouldn't listen to Sowell.... He's FOX news for black people.
Resently upping relationship with Swiss banks.
It's not the size, it's how you use it.
The world runs on Greenwich meantime we won the time zone ,😂
"Who gets to say London is the world's leading financial capital?" Do you imagine a whole lot of people in suits sitting round a large table & battling it out?🤭
It's maths - pure & simple.By which statistics are formed. And economic tables. And financial imperitives.
I think the USA, by continuing to use GDP as a measure of a countries wealth & importance, can't be blamed for thinking they are the world's financial giants. It means nothing to the rest of the world - who know how Government's fiscal worth is actually measured; because the 'average' person from the USA believe that GDP is the measure other countries use to boast about who is the biggest, largest, and most wealthy in global scales. It isn't. We don't.
The funniest thing is that Tyler has already reacted to this video 😂 ua-cam.com/video/3kk8NbP8Ut8/v-deo.htmlsi=ISTumehVOZwcsICH

You realise he's never going to answer you don't you?
Never going to happen.... He also has a channel about Canada and he could go there with a 6 hour drive. He doesn't care about any other places. He's been "learning" about Canada, the UK, Norway, for two years.
He does this because his twin brother told him to. He just fake laughs and blinks and hopes middle aged women click on him.
@@damonx6109 You missed Japan (although he seems to have given that one up). He also has a fake Facebook page claiming he's from the UK (Chester I think). Maybe the whole thing is fake and the two of them are really British and putting on American accents because they're actors! PS: I'm a middle-aged woman so not sure what that says about me
The british empire never fell it became a bank .
No, London is not the answer. We had industries all over the UK until the london government shut them all down and joined in with europeans in the common market. We have never recovered.
Certainly decimated the motor industry.
The common market had nothing to do with the decision to shut down heavy industries, that was purely down to Thatcher, who had a vision of Britain becoming the financial and service centre of Europe, which happened, but only in London, unfortunately it had the side effect of throwing millions of people, across the rest of the country, out of well paying, highly skilled, dirty jobs, and into low paying, low skilled, clean jobs. Speaking for myself, I was happy with my well paying, highly skilled, dirty job, and absolutely detested the low paying, low skilled, clean jobs that I was forced to take. When the industry that you trained in and dedicated 7 years of your life to learning how to do well, suddenly disappears, almost overnight, you have a tendency to look upon that deliberate act, as treason. Yes, I'm still salty, with good reason, instead of improving the wealth of the whole country, Thatcher and successive Tory governments have concentrated that wealth in only one region, London and the South East. The rest of the country has been largely ignored, and allowed to drop into poverty and deprivation.
Manufacturing closed down long before we joined the common market. Does Thatcher ring any bells?
Why does it upset you American 😂😂😂

Not for me i might be English but London does nothing for me its not my dream
After 25 years of working in the City of London and Canary Wharf I can tell you it is not a dream. It is a means to an end. It attracts a lot of ar*eholes. The city is fun in terms of restaurants and pubs etc. Canary Wharf is soulless.
Ppl complain about brits not speaking another language? Prob is, which? No other language is universal as 1st, 2nd language & millions just as coinsidental to the wide English usage.
Spanish is huge
@sunseeker9581 it's big but world.
And the BBC tv network is the biggest and the oldest in the world
The Uk used to have most of the biggest companies but in the last 50 years other countries have overtaken us - doesnt mean we dont have many large and successful businesses further down the league table. Many of our biggest companies were bought out by foreign companies since WW2.
Have you ever heard about a country called Kuwait 🇰🇼 ??
