The B-17 was my high school mascot. Richland Bombers. We played football with mushroom cloud decals on our helmets. I used to live right off Bombing Range road. I never thought it was weird until I moved out of town! I guess the B-29 dropped the nukes, but the Hanford site-the reason for the town in the first place-was responsible for a good amount of the plutonium used in the Manhattan Project. The story is that at one point each of the workers dedicated a day’s pay to fund a B-17, and that bomber was consequently named “Day’s Pay” and later became our mascot.
@@gooser__43 that’s a good question, and my memory might be failing me, but I don’t remember any one distinct tradition that our school had that was B-17 related. What I remember better is we would do a lot of theming in the school around bomber planes, nukes and mushroom clouds, and radiation-for assemblies, posters to advertise sports teams and events around the school, things like that. At football games they’d use an air raid horn as a sound bite, and kids would say “Nuke them ‘til they glow” to cheer on their team, especially on posters. My guess is the administration has discouraged that practice by now, the mascot and use of the mushroom cloud logo in the first place was pretty controversial. My wife just had her mascot switched away from “Braves” so we’ve been expecting a similar thing to happen to Richland. The idea is brought up a lot, but they’re still Bombers right now.
I love the statement and the partial quote at the end. I’ve been recently hearing more and more about how historians dislike the idea of using history to learn from the mistakes. It’s more of a tool to figure out how we got here. I’d argue that’s the same thing in a sense but I didn’t spend 10 years in college.

Makes me think of the show: ‘Into The Cold Blue.’ The harrowing missions these guys in the Mighty Eighth, took over Europe. I believe the average age of these specialists and their pilots being younger than 25, flying at least 25 missions with a 25% chance of surviving through it all. Something inherently different about people back then. Great video and I love the effort put into this, gents.
I've gotten to see the B-17 at Wright Patterson Airforce Museum in OH a few time, and it's awesome. Definitely smaller than I thought it would be, but still impressive
What’s the music playing in the intro? I swear I’ve heard it before. But yeah awesome video. Very different from the usual stuff, but not in a bad way.
Great work, thank you. Just a quick question - did the engines really all rotate in the same direction? I would have thought that each side would rotate in opposite directions to counter the torque being applied to the entire aircraft. Perhaps this came about later.
Counter rotating engines are extremely rare in multi engine aircraft. Generally all engines turn the same way because it makes manufacturing and sourcing replacement parts easier and cheaper. The only example of a WW2 plane with counter rotating engines that I can think of off the top of my head is the P-38 Lightning.

Enjoyed the video, however one suggestion for improvement is when you’re going over measurements it would be good to either mention the measurements in metric or put them on the screen. Not everyone converts measurements between feet and meters automatically
17:45 - Couldn’t get my head around this discrepancy, but you mean each independent engine tank + its 1/4 of the feeder tanks was 700 gal, which is what each engine would need for 14 hrs cruising. This means each aircraft roughly needed 2,800 gallons of gas on a 14 hr cruise. This checks out as a trip from Norfolk to Leipzig and back in a B-17 took 2,200 gallons of fuel which is an 8hr trip.
Makes sense that there is a route to move fuel between engine fuel systems in each wing. If one engine is lost, its surplus feeders can be fed to its wing pair which will need to run harder to balance the thrust of the aircraft. There are also some small fuselage tanks by the engineer’s area and this is part of a loop that allows fuel to be moved between the main wings tanks and feeders. The systems are independent in normal operation, but the the total fuel amount can be moved in stages across the aircraft by selecting various fuel pumps.
I’ve flown in one. All I’d need to be qualified to fly one is getting my tail wheel endorsement. Already got my multi, high power, and complex endorsements
