Travel to Cape Cod (MA)….Sandy Neck Beach in a town called Sandwich. First town over the bridge from the mainland. You can stay right on the beach….on the sand. It’s hard packed sand….so, literally, you’re right on the beach. It’s beautiful. You can walk the shoreline and hear the waves at night. I think it would be a nice change of pace! Call ahead.

Honey, one thing I've learned is to take it easy on yourself. You tell yourself, everything else can wait -I'm going to do my job, youtube is a hobby and family is a blessing. Take a deep breath, figure out what is stressing you and organize your priorities. Joy is always the most important.

Thank you for sharing your real stories and not just the “perfect” ones. Sending you positive thoughts. I’m wondering if Rue is picking up on your stress right now? I know animals really sense how we are feeling. As things work out for you, hopefully she’ll start feeling better too. Sending you good vibes! You are amazing and a wonderful dog mama. 🥰

Sarah - Not sure, but it could be the eucalyptus. Many dogs find it highly irritating. I have a bit of a super smeller myself, and I know it would drive me out of my mind. And, fall and winter are quite a ways off. It would only take you a few days to get back to the west coast, and you'd be happy until you can go back in the fall. Leaves are generally best late September though mid-October, then go to Florida. Really check into the smells. Remember -dogs' sniffers are so much more sensitive than ours.

One help with Rue might be what youre missing too- your frequent outdoor treks! She might just be bored with a touch of cabin fever. I love your new van! I mean LOVE ❤️ - truth is the walls may seem a bit more “enclosed” than the airstream did. The best thing is YOU CARE about her & that is A+ on your part!! I APPRECIATE your honesty and not just telling us the wonderful things about your nomadic life! I watch and dream of that life, so its good to know its not ALL rainbows and butterflies! You are amazing!

we have a husky Angel in our 1998 Holiday Rambler, since 2018, she has torn things up at times also, we have found that she needs to run a bit in the morning or she gets bored and will tear stuff up, so if we can't run her one day due to weather, we crate her, if we have to go out, but she loves her crate den, we leave the door open when we are here and she goes in all the time to have her den feeling, we do put her in the crate if we leave for hours as well, so that she will not tear things up, our husky does like to watch out the window when she is in the mood, best wishes 🙏🏼

So sorry you and Rue Rue Bear are having a hard time adjusting. One thing about huskies is that they don’t do well to a shift in environment. I moved twice with my Azula and both times it took some getting used to. Even when I bought a new car, she wasn’t too happy about being left alone in it while I ran into the store for a short amount of time. Rue reminds me of Azula, and if that means anything, they’ll eventually get used to it. You basically have to go back to basics and retrain them. She is also feeding off of your energy since you are soul mates and def feels your stress. I hope it gets better for you two soon! We’re here for you 💕

I have used an essential oil diffuser for my dog. I would put her in her condo (crate), cover it with a cloth - leaving the entrance exposed. There are many variations for blends to use in the diffuser. I chose: lavender, Frankincense, atlas cedar, and ylang ylang essential oils to use in the diffuser. I would start the diffuser an hour before I would leave. My dog no longer has separation anxiety issues and e no longer use the diffuser. There a many recipes for blends using the search term " separation anxiety essential oil blends for pets". The blend I used works great for anxiety for humans too. Sending good thoughts your way

Thanks so much for your authenticity. It is rare in social media for creators to share less-than-curated-best. Regarding Rue, my Husky feeds off my emotions - perhaps our hormones or pheromones change when stressed. So my amateur advice is to take care of yourself and she will sense when your stress is alleviated.

Oh my dear... first you have NOTHING to apologize for! The fact that you're sharing your's & Rue's life with complete strangers is outstanding! You don't own any of us anything!
Second, I'm not a dog trainer, per se, but I have raised many dogs. and have learned a lot from the professional trainers that I have used in the past. You're doing right for Rue by crating her - separation anxiety or no separation anxiety. Be that said, there are some wonderful trainers I've come to follow & respect that are also on social media. One in particular is on Long Island, but she also does virtual consultations & she's a certified dog behaviorist. If she can't help you, I'm sure she can recommend somebody who can. (And she supports providing anti-anxiety drugs when needed!). Admittedly, I'm not familiar with the nuances of what can & can't be shared publicly in comments, so for respect, if you're interested in who she is, please feel free to contact me via a reply. Best of luck & Safe Travels! xoxo

The star link problem xx I’ve seen vans with a post on their roof that they can put their star link on when they’re not driving and are in one spot xx I’m not sure where they get the attachment from but you could enquire at star link itself or your colleagues xx with the dog I’d give her something she can focus on such as a kong stuffed with food and frozen (bones/treats etc) xx you could try this when she’s in her crate area and you could also put her in there in small time slots while you are in the van and treat her while she’s there xx another thing you could try is a snuggly bed, the dog equivalent of feliway (sos not sure what it’s called), putting some music on for her etc xx just a few ideas but hope this helps xx😘

You're doing the crate training in the correct manner. Keep it fun with lots of treats she doesn’t usually get and add a couple minutes each time. Stay in the van until you get up to 15 mins or more and she’s totally chill. Then start over with a few minutes out of the van and ignore her when you come back. Not excited or correcting her. Let her out and do something mundane. Keep adding more minutes over a week until she's totally chill and napping. Huskies are so dramatic but very important not to coddle her just be non chalant. My daughter is a dog trainer and weve always crate trained our dogs and rescues. Some dogs are harder than others. Best of luck and as intelligent as you are you will figure it out! ❤ and dont forget a long physically and mentally stimulating walk before you leave each time so she's pooped. Hang in there!

Can totally relate to the east coast issue, the burnout of planning, and anxiety with your pup. We are on our first swing of the east coast. Our pup has definitely struggled with thunderstorms and fireworks, etc. I know you are trying to keep the cost to zero, but I would recommend getting a Thousand Trails Membership with Trails Collection just for piece of mind when you're tired and want to stop the movement a bit. They aren't great or secluded, but they are a good, inexpensive, safe spot plugged in where you can stay longer. You can add the west coast zone when you move to offset boondocking. They might be pretty booked for the summer now though. No affiliation...I just know it's been helpful to us. Safe travels!

fwiw, you seemed to light up when you talked about going west - you still have a few months until winter, plus leaf peeping season in the NE isnt really until Oct. maybe a trip west of the missippi before the fall?
digital nomading/remote work + fast travel is HARD. sometimes it helps to shift focus between the two - prioritizing work by sticking around somewhere for a bit and then cutting back on work to focus on travel. it can also help to batch meetings all on the same day to give you more flexibility with when you need to be connected so it's not as stressful.
if you do stick around the NE, maybe look into dog-friendly coworking spaces. for internet, can you use your phone's hotspot?
good luck. thanks again for sharing this - it's definitely relatable! 💗

The east coast is EXHAUSTING! I live right outside of DC and did a roadtrip to the grand canyon. AMAZING! The trees out there and just the vast amounts of land was so relaxing. It might just be that this environment is getting to her as much as it's getting to you. Once you both head back to the peaceful west she might relax more. Dogs are so much more sensitive to everything than us.

I loved seeing all of the supportive comments after viewing this video. Seasons of life can be so hard, especially too with Rue's struggles on top of it all. There's some great advice in here on working up to time. I'm not a trainer but our pup struggled in general with crate training. If these are at all helpful, things that helped us: finding a very high value treat she only gets at crate time, it makes it exciting. we also play music when we leave her alone or a show off of an ipad to help drown out other noise.
You are doing all the right things for Rue by going back to the basics and keeping her safety in mind. Its so clear how much you love her and want the best for her.

Curious if she settles down when you’re able to boondock for a while. She’s amazing. I’ve never had the luxury of having a husky off leash. I’m impressed with her and you. You’re a great husky mom. I wonder if she’s stressing because her windows are gone. Hmmm. Good luck. Looking forward to more updates f your adventures.

Hang in there Sarah! This too shall pass. My 2 cents is to both ditto what others are saying about Rue sensing and feeding off your emotions so make sure you're working on your mind set as well, and to also consider covering the front of her dog crate with a dark blanket or something that helps create a dark environment. My grandmother was a dog trainer and showed dogs for decades, and when adjusting dogs to crates, having a dark environment can help them feel safe and protected, versus being locked up and knowing they're locked up because they can see out when their crate isn't covered, and knowing they can't protect themselves from everything they see and hear. Being in a dark den (covered/darkened crate) helps them relax and rest and feel like someone or something can't get to them, even if they can hear it/them. Outta sight, outta mind. This has worked well for all of our dog family members over our 30 yr marriage. In fact, our dogs voluntarily go into their crates to rest or when there's too much activity in the house. It sounds like Rue is having issues adjusting to the new changes, just as you are. This too shall pass! Hope my 2 cents helps or summons further ideas for you. As a 55 year old mom whose hubby is retiring soon and I am planning and looking forward to using our Lance travel trailer more, I have enjoyed your videos from your start and thoroughly enjoy who you are as a person. Don't change, stay true to who you are, and as Dr. Seuss said, "Those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind."

A few years ago, I went through some really hard and difficult situations. My living arrangements changed, significantly-I moved 3 times in 6 months, I was hospitalized with sepsis, out of work for 3 months, among other things..... My dog, who was always so well behaved, started peeing inside, chewing things, being disruptive. Worst of all, he wouldn't let me sleep-he would "alarm bark" at everything. I crated him-starting at 5 minutes at a time, and worked up to 4 hours. I increased it, slowly, by 1 minute a day-left him alone every day-gradually increasing the amount of away time while he was crated. What his vet also had me do-was- I had to be on a schedule-wake up at the same time, walk him at the same time-even on week-ends, walk the same route-you get it -familiar repetition. I also had to stop work, every night, by 7-no matter what. I bought a house-thought it would be better....but, the first 7 months, due to construction, I lived in the LR, kitchen, and bathroom. The alarm barking became out of control-I had to crate him at night and while I was at work-I work at home, so I could let him out every 2-3 hours-which was a Blessing. After we were able to move into the full house, he quieted down. He's been fine, until my next door neighbors bought a German Sheppard-this dog is MEAN! My dog cries if he hears or sees this dog--we are slowly readjusting our walk routine. I really did learn that all the moves and stress affected my dog-because he could sense the stress in me. Repetition and familiarity is what these dogs need to adjust. Rue will be fine, so will you! Sorry for being so long winded-I'm famous for it-UGH! It's OK to keep it real-This Grandma cares about you. We all LOVE your videos, but, please know, we are here to help you too!! Also, I am a dog LOVER-nothing against German Shepards-more the people who don't know how to train her!!

Sounds like it could possibly be separation anxiety. There are some good videos from Susan Garrett about it. You might try a remote feeder. You can press a button, it dispenses her treat. Close the door, press the button, stand outside, press the button, go back in. Gradually build duration. Make her look forward to treat time when you leave her alone in the van.

Just it this way. Your van is your home while you plan your visits to relatives back east. Your van is your home whilst you enjoy the beauty of the west. It's not going to be always perfect, easygoing either place. Travel is travel, with it come potholes, strange unnfriendly places, jaw dropping natural wonders, along with inspiring characters that when it is all over have only added depth to the story of our journey. My journey last summer cross country I remember it was like my car windows were like story boxes in every direction. Sometimes boring and never-ending the views, and then again eyes wide open in awe as I passed places I didn't want to lose sight of. It was an ordeal and a feat of accomplishment. Back roads of poverty were sad to pass through. But Chicago I gave myself, on the way up and the way back. Like a present to myself for all the commitments I stuck to for my arduous trip to the unknowns. I unwrapped it, wrapped myself in it. The vibe of that city still a hum in my soul today. So you see my dear wherever you're at something is bound to show up, good or bad, it's all going to be a part of that particular journey. Have safe travels!

We’re moving from sticks and bricks to a fifth wheel with our 10yo dog, and this has helped me think through how we might make her transition as seamless as possible. Hey Sarah, struggle at this point of our life became just a normal thing that happens. Even though I'm not doing the same stuff as you are and living in a different country (Brazil) and speaking a different language, I can relate the negative sides you are going through right now. There is this one thing my parents used to tell me: "if you are feeling that life is been to hard on you, is because its about to teach you something, pay attention because it might be useful for you or for somebody else".
About your Starlink, I saw some people mounting it on their vans permanently, there is this flat mount rack, this might be the solution you are looking for, at least could be one less problem to thing about.
Anyway, I hope everything goes well for you, keep it up

It’s a hard adjustment for sure. I live solo and work from home which for me is a 37’ 5th wheel. I had to accept that the instagram vision of moving from beautiful remote location is not practical with a traditional 9-5. For me living in my RV has now become parking for 2-4 weeks and trying to follow ideal weather. It has provided stability for me and my dog while allowing me to slowly explore and see the country. My recommendation would be, slow down. Look for camping that allows for longer stays. You and your fur baby won’t burn out that way. Best of luck! You’re resilient and will find your groove soon!

Great video. You do a wonderful job with Rue and don’t let other people tell you differently. She’s probably suffering from separation anxiety which is common. According to a well known dog trainer, our dogs are SUPER sensitive to our feelings too. Try to make sure when you leave her your thoughts are not on power shut-offs, people scaring Rue or any other anxiety inducing fears you might feel when you leave her.

I am going through the dog with seperation anxiety thing. She is a rescue dog who seemed fine at first, at being left along for an hour every now and then - but then came the ripping things apart, chewing her way out of a large dog pen (wooden door), biting and bending the bars of the dog crate (when I was nearby!). So now she is on doggy Prozac. After a few weeks, I think it's working! I don't like the idea of medicating my dog, but I intend to reduce the meds when we need to re-order them. Good luck with Rue! I love her big eyes, and rue is one of my favorite plants :)

My opinion and also what I currently do with my experiences. Which, mimics yours btw. I went back to tow trailer and got a truck that is setup up for remote adventures. So my airstream is my base camp and my truck is my remote adventure vehicle. Thai provides the maximum amount of comfort with adventures. Also, Van Life is getting more and more difficult to do and will eventually won’t be worth it at some point.

I loved the video❤️ It shows your real life and that is what I love to see - it connects you more to your viewers😊 Definitely rough patches for you and Rue, but you are handling it very well! I am sure many days have been tough for you both. You are thoughtfully assessing your (& Rue’s) needs and making the best plan forward. I think taking a contract would be good for you for a few months. If Rue is still struggling, get him a pet sitter or a doggie day care when you are working. Sending prayers of peace and comfort for you and Rue🙏🏼 You will find what works. Hang in there!🥰

So sorry that you are having challenges with your husky, and the other things you mentioned in your video. When I was traveling with my husky, she didn’t like being left alone at all, she destroyed things a lot. So I do understand. I hope things get better soon for you and your pup. Thanks for sharing.

I'm picking up my van from Drifter in about 2 weeks! If you need a place to park in the MD area, I'm in the Catoctin Mountains, a great location, remote on 25 acres, close to the MD/PA line. You're welcome to hang for as long as you want to!

I too have a dog that has anxiety issues when left alone. He has broken teeth trying to get out of the crate when we are gone. Our last option was medication, and it has been working. We also continue to spray his crate down with Lavender and Chamomile to help relax him. Good luck!

Hang in there! You are doing great! Our dogs definitely suffer anxiety issues when settling into new environments…we have a bulldog that loved everyone including other dogs. After selling our house and moving to two different apartments while waiting for our new house to be built, he became aggressive to other dogs, destroyed walls and got sick when we would leave for the day. Baby steps…he’s getting better…one day at a time. Rue will be fine!

Try getting the higher end mobile starlink dish and get it mounted on your van permanently. So you no longer have to setup dishy every time you park at parking lots.

You are doing a great job with your dog! Crating is the solution but once they learn they can bust out (as my German shep did) they never stop trying. My solution was a TNC metal crate. They are escape proof and it gives me peace of mind. They can be custom made, the only downside is they are heavy. Good luck!!

I work from our Airstream Basecamp and use the t-mobile wifi router and it is soooo easy to set up at a new place (literally just plug it in), it's really affordable and it's worked really well in every place we've been so far and I have to do Zoom calls all the time for work. We've been all over the west and mid west in the last 6 months, so I can't speak for the east coast, but I know Verizon has a version of it too. Definitely recommend looking into it!!

    Hi Sarah,
Perhaps Rue needs a window to see out. Maybe that’s why she was trying to get into the front of the van. As she’s hearing all kinds of noises in a parking lot, etc.
    just a thought…
    Love your videos!
All the best to you both,

I'm sorry about your struggles. Transitions usually come with at least some. You are such a good dog mom, never forget that. I think the metal crate is a great idea. Your dad did a great job! My Golden would sometimes go in his crate on his own. My rule was that when he decided go in the crate the kids had to respect it and leave him be. Just hoping Rue's anxiety settles. She is such a sweet girl. ❤ Take care & be well. Thank you for the videos.

Don’t feel bad about giving Rue meds for separation anxiety. It’s an illness/disorder. If she had allergies or cancer or an ear infection you would treat her with the appropriate medication. That’s what my vet explained to me when I had to start giving my pupper anxiety meds years ago…he no longer takes them being that he’s 15 now and sleeps 97% of the time. One hint-ask the vet to send the prescription to a pharmacy like Walgreens, Wegmans, etc, because it will in all likelihood be lots cheaper than at the vet’s office. hope Rue starts to settle down. Perhaps once you get into more of a ‘routine’ she will begin to settle down a bit. Hang in there! You and Rue have this together! 💕🙏🌻☀️🐶😊

thank you for sharing. wish I had some helpful advice. if you are like me, even though there are a few other tough things happen... Rue's situation weighs heaviest and that alone can make all the rest seem worse. I assume she never had this behavior when you left her in the jeep either. I wonder if there is something happening in the van that triggers her? Might be worth an experiment to record her (with sound) when you leave. all the best and good luck.

Yeah I wonder if it’s something in the van? My dog started growing in her crate once in my apartment just out of nowhere. I realized my sister left her computer charging right next to her and I think the noise of the fan really bothered her. She stopped growling as soon as we unplugged it!!

I live in Pennsylvania and I watch a lot of van life videos from out west and would agree that finding free camping in the northeast would not be as easy. We have a lot of beautiful state parks in PA but they get booked up fast. The cost to camp at the state parks are cheaper than privately owned campgrounds. Good luck on your journey.
