I'm an OG Carat, who found them predebut! I saw their talent and dedication right from the beginning and that was it. I already loved Pledis's other groups, Nu'est and After School, so I was already familiar with the company's crappy financial situation and lack of management skills, so when I heard about these little trainees trying to make it, I became curious. Pledis was about on the verge of bankruptcy. They had already abandoned After School by then and Nu'est was left out in the cold, floundering, trying to survive. The only thing that gave Seventeen a shot was 17TV. Pledis put a couple of cameras in their dance practice room (known as the Melona colored room. Melona is a famous green ice cream bar) and they recorded and broadcast the boys practicing, performing, and horsing around and streamed it under the name, 17TV. They developed a small fanbase. When their pre-debut show, Seventeen Project, came out, they had that small fanbase to support them. It was Pledis's last shot to get them to debut. You can tell by the Adore U vid how low budget it was but the fact that the boys were Kpop's first fully self-producing idols got attention and they exploded on the scene in S. Korea. There were some groups the wrote songs but none were writing, composing, producing and choreographing everything they put out. Mingyu even designed merch. Plus, their concept was different from any other group to debut at that time. They got lots of attention for being fresh, positive, and youthful where Kpop idols tended to be sexy or darker at that time. It was refreshing to see a group acting their age for a change. Their discography has been pretty exclusively about being young people growing up. Most of their fans have grown up along with them, and older fans like me can reminisce about our youth. That's why it was a big deal that this album had the theme of "Seventeen is not Seventeen anymore", meaning after they signed their new contracts, they are now a new Seventeen, exploring new things. They've always wanted to make comforting and inspiring music for Carats. You will eventually discover that the Hip Hop Unit used to do dis tracks (like Ah Yeah, but they also have mix tapes that go hard, and have dis tracks) early on. But they eventually decided they weren't going to put dis tracks on their albums, because they didn't want that negatively going out to their fans. You will also notice they are Kpop's most modest group. Only recently did only some of their members briefly flash some abs. In an industry filled with groups who flashed abs or go shirtless on the regular, Seventeen said "screw that, we won't show ANYTHING" Only in the last couple of years will you find any glimpses of skin and even then no one has completely taken off a shirt, except for a couple of instances. Plus, you have Woozi (and Bumzu, his writing/composing partner) who didn't follow Kpop trends. He MADE trends. They really were and still are very "Seventeen" in everything they do. I saw they had the potential to be something really great and unique in Kpop the first time I saw them. They didn't disappoint! Sorry for the long reply btw!

Seventeen felt like they had a lot to prove when they debuted. Apart from their small fanbase, everyone expected the group to fail. Hence so many of the songs in 17 Carat talking about showing their potential, that they still had a long way to go but were ready for this race etc... Right from this album, you could tell what Seventeen was about : passionate kids who dreamed big and loved just as big.

Thank you for reacting to this EP! You’re in it for the ride. 😆
Random TMI, I guess? >< It was said that Shining Diamond was actually supposed to be their debut song/title track for this album, but they felt like Adore U suited them more. It was a strategic move too because the refreshing concept made them somehow stand out (not to mention it was self-produced by woozi too) since most boy groups back then went for dark concepts…which was pledis’ original plan too if you’ll see their teasers for this album, but the mv director suddenly proposed a different plan and everyone was flexible enough to switch the concept.
And yes, unit songs are their signature concept in albums, it’s seldom that they don’t include them since they’ve been promoting themselves as a whole group with 3 subunits from day 1. What’s great about them tho is that they don’t restrict themselves from the usual vocal hiphop performance units… like in Semicolon album, they had songs by age (95,96,97,maknae lines), and other mixed units from other albums.

I don't think Shining Diamonds was ever supposed to be their title track. It was specifically during 17 Project as a predebut release, they had already decided on Adore U as their title track by then. However they did indeed have other songs planned for their debut album, the album was supposed to be produced by Rhymer and they already candidates ready, but Rhymer realized how talented the boys were while working with them and, seeing Woozi's talent for composing, convinced Pledis' CEO to go the self-producing route.

I know their debuted is a bit normal(?) but yeah back in 2015 there're not much groups done like seventeen before, big group, spilt to unit, make their own things, and even have so much layers to their musics. And after watch 'SEVENTEEN PROJECT' I'm really impressed, they gave so much effort to their works. Jam jam and shining diamond choreograph made by hoshi when he was around 18~19 so yeah its kinda cute tho XD bc he's a baby!
20 is always my fav song of svt. It's so pure and cute. I think 20 in the lyrics was apply to 20yo bc 20 really important to kr pp, you see 20's mean they're adults, it's a time after graduated from school, some work some study in uni. So its a precious time for teenage-adult ages.

Have you noticed? Their debut mv is not that eye catching but eye catching at the same time? It is simple and you can tell that the company that time was really in the verge of bankruptcy, Seventeen literally saved them from being bankrupt and Pledis entertainment put all their faith on seventeen, the CEO sold his house for seventeen to debut. Seventeen is self produced as we all know that is because they needed to, they have to produce their music themselves because they did not have the money to hire composers and all. The humble beginnings of seventeen reallyyyy

fun fact about adore u, the first part of the chorus with jeonghan (long hair) is not actually his voice it’s Seungkwan’s. it surprised me when I found out but knowing their voices you can actually tell. apparently he was i’ll when they were recording but instead of letting him get better they just had seungkwan record for him.

Hi LC! I'm your new carat subscriber!
I'm with them from very beginning since 2015 and you should watch 17project (maybe you watch it alone or reaction like this) but it will make you understand more about them from very beginning. The shining diamond choreography is hoshi first project too, you should see it also the live performance of the unit especially the vocal is amazing live! I wish next you'll see their performance after the lyrics like to the performance team so you could see how great they are in live concert!
Can't wait to see your next reaction for the boys! Thank you ♡

We're finally starting the album reaction ~~ Can't wait for the remaining albums ~~
( I think The8 doesn't have a line in Adore U, It was said that is because he is not that good in Korean yet at the time... He's the last members to join the group..)
"Slip into the diamond life" (a welcome greeting for new carats..) &
"You can't copy this, Seventeen Carat" (CARAT, the fandom name which was announced February 14, 2016..yes, Double celebration'cause it's Valentine's Day too☺️) is from their predebut song Shining Diamond..

I always took the night and morning lyrics of 20 as like I want to be your morning, I want you to be my night, like instead of just spending the fun moments of the day with the person they want the mornings and nights too. it's such a sweet thing :,)

I've been a fan since predebut, so they have many hip hop song in predebut like they cover or they make their own song and melody for their rap performance. But I love them since they cover one thing by One Direction in 2014 and watched their Seventeen TV after that and become their fans until today

For the 1st few songs, the translations aren't the best. So maybe, these songs have a completely different meaning. Svtlyrics is quite accurate, but I don't believe they have SVT's earlier releases.
