The reason why you don’t hear groups covering Bee Gees music is that NO ONE can match their harmonies and falsetto. The genius of Bruce Springsteen is that he knows this and is smart enough not to even try. He uses his creativity and puts his own spin on the song and pays homage to The Bee Gees with a beautifully unique rendition of Staying Alive, absolute genius!!!
Well observed..And that's thing with 'covers' either the piece of music has to be performed perfectly the same(which is o/k,but ur not really learning anything new),or a artist has to put their own fingerprint on it!..
That's exactly what I said. I saw him cover Purple Rain once and I've learned he's very good at knowing what his limitations are. When it came time to do the guitar solo, he turned it over to his guitarist. He can play guitar, he can't play like Prince can. He can sing okay, He can't sing like Barry. He's learned to take the song and make it his own within what he can do.
Totally agree with your take on this. Being a Bee Gees fan I was just thrilled the crowd went wild when he began to sing, knowing the song and, in a Rock n' Roll setting, dove into the energy of it. I love how you stated that he was smart enough to not even try to match the original vocal formula yet maintained an honor to the Bee Gees in this rendition. I loved it!
You don´t hear groups covering Bee Gees? 😮I think very few groups in history have been covered as much as The Bee Gees. Take songs like Words, To Love Somebody, Morning of My Life, How Deep Is Your Love etc. and you will find hundreds of cover versions by great artists. However, I do agree to Bee Gees harmonies and vocals was something truly great. Bruce Springsteen is a great entertainer and I would love to see him live one day!
How on earth have I not heard this before!? Amazing performance. The boss truly owned this iconic disco classic. The brass section is simply out of this world.
Been listening to this nonstop after I found it ... back in 2024! incredible cover and what a musical joy. You truly feel how The Boss loves music and owns it, even if it is an iconic disco classic like Stayin' Alive!. Simply wonderful. Thank you!
I have developed a habit. When I have a bad day I listen to THIS and somehow things don't feel as bad. I feel like staying alive. Bruce is often to magic in my life...Music, Music.... listen to music.
This is the most extraodinary cover of a song by the BeeGees I have ever heard. It would have been a number 1 if released as a single on the charts. Only the Boss could come up with this work of genius.
What makes Bruce Springsteen even better than he is lies in the fact that he's not afraid to tackle anything!!! No one touches the Bee Gees but he gives it a go and it's great. He does old school music like Bill Deal & The Rhondells and The Swinging Medallions. He is a true musician in ever sense of the word.
This is how you ‘cover’ a song. Others will only sing the song in their voice, Bruce makes it a new version using his artistic chops. There is no one like the Boss
First time hearing the cover...but not the first time Bruce has done great covers. Great use of the Horn section and interpretation of some great music By the Bee Gees!
I was there! Our dear friend Alex took us, and he's a BIG FAN. We got there early so that we could have a bite to eat. During the munchies, we could hear the muffled sound-check through the auditorium doors. None of the Bruce-Heads could figure out the tune they were playing. My wife Lisa, a bass-player, said, "That sounds like Stayin' Alive"! Apparently, Bruce hired the violin section mid afternoon and taught them the parts at rehearsal. The punchline is that my crazy friend Alex told me exactly where to stand during "Spirit In The Night", so that I could be the first person to catch him on his "crowd surf". Very silly, and a lot of fun.
I was in the pit at the show three months after this in Albany, NY where he not only played this and Don't Change (INXS), but also Treat Her Right, Save The Last Dance For Me and Seaside Bar Song. One of the best shows I've ever been to.
Was at this concert. Best night ever. Didn’t think it was possible but he just keeps getting better. They did The Wild The Innocent Album all the way through. Never thought I’d ever get to see that. Etched in my memory FOR EVER!!!
Without a doubt this is one of the greatest covers of any song I’ve ever heard , the fact that it is live and the arrangement with the band is absolutely unreal
Agreed. This is so different, I don't even compare it to the Bee Gees. The middle section with all the brass gets a bit loud for my tastes, but it's a very good stab at a different take on an iconic disco track.
I never thought anybody would be able to pull of singing this song but WOW this blew me away . Please come to "Down Under "=again Bruce it has been to long .Please make it 2024
Awesome tribute to Bee Gees. For many who are unaware of this findada band in 1958 and went through all musical styles being a true music legends, now played by Bruce masterfully. Excellent musicians. Thank you.

the power in this version of that song is just magnetic...he transforms a disco-era piece into a raw rock'n roll performance. Bruce is one the best performers that ever existed.
Man, I didn’t think anybody else could do a cover version of “Stayin’ Alive” by The Bee Gees and do a halfway decent job. Then I start watching this video of Bruce Springsteen, and he sang it like he had written it in the first place. Robin and Maurice Gibb are smiling down from heaven. Barry Gibb needs to check it out, then thank the Boss for turning this disco classic into a New Jersey rock anthem. Wow!

One of the best ever Bruce covers and he's done a few but always with his stamp but never losing the integrity of the original. The Boss one of the best of all time.

Bruce, you should group some of these feel good songs, like Love of the Common People, Come On, We Got to Keep the Fire Burnin’, etc., and share them. Please? Everyone could use a lift. Stay well, you and your family.☝️
I downloaded this entire show just a few days after the actual show back in 2014 and I still think it is one of the greatest concerts Bruce, or anyone, has ever played. An incredible setlist, including the entire Wild, Innocent, E Street Shuffle album, and a host of rarely played songs. A show that starts with a cover of a 1978 BeeGees classic and ends with a cover of a 1978 AC/DC classic is a absolutely incredible journey...
I've been a Bruce fan for almost 40 years, and I still look at / listen to him and go - how does he do that? And the answer is - it's the goodness of his soul that comes through in his talent and in the performances he gives. He's all heart.
I agree, and I've been a fan since the 1970s. He has always struck me as a person of complex emotion, with personal inner struggles, with an uncanny ability to feel what is going on with others inside and channel it to a much larger audience. I have listened to his music at some really hard times i my own life and it always gave me the inspiration to keep on fighting. Someone was out there in the darkness who really understood. Yeah, I'm a woman and there is that, but now that we both are old, I would love just to sit down and talk to this guy, find out what he thinks about things. Only man in the world that can make a cover to be better than the original version. It happens the same with Dream baby Dream or Don't Change (INXS). Simply the Boss.
It is SO super-classy for perhaps the most American rocker to cover the works of the Bee Gees and INXS when visiting Australia. And what a great arrangement it is.
Wow ! first I heard & saw this ,it's Great .Boss & Co Did a fantastic job of a great Bee gees song ,jazzed it up & even some blues. Must been great in the that concert..
Just when I think I'm learning a song I can do as an acoustic cover that hasn't been played to death and the boss has got there long before me and did it better than I ever could
So awesome! One of the truly cool covers ever!! Respect for the song, E-Streeters KILL!! Most amazing is that Bruce hired the 6 most beautiful Violin players alive!!!
Extraordinary to think that this rocking number is the first song of the show. Its the sort of performance a lesser band might reserve for the climax, to go out on a high, but Springsteen was just getting started for the night.
I am a big BeeGees fan, beginning with their 60s song. Not only was BS incredibly brave to cover this song...but WOW... what a cover it is. Like a whole new song. Love you Bruce

@@pkdick1 Nope, it just gives it a different slant. And the crowd going wild the moment he began to sing it before the rock chords came into play, proves the song has dug its heels in and many across the boards love it.
Afer listening to Bruce´s versions of "Stayin´Alive" ( Bee Gees), "Because the night" ( Patti Smith) , "This Land is your land" ( Woody Guthrie), "The sun ain´t gonna shine anymore" ( Frankie Vallie) or " Purple Rain" ( Prince)... I nominate Bruce as the best cover musician and the best own song musician in the history of music.
this is unfriggin believable! I wonder what Robin, Barry and Maurice would think. I know they would be boogieing with everyone else. This man is the best rock and roller by far. Sorry stones, and everyone else. NOBODY DOES IT LIKE THE BOSS!
Pretty sure they would like it with all that musicianship going on there. Wild to put that funky early 70s blaxploitation movie sound effect 1:27 with violins and horns! The Bee Gees's original doesn't have that. Great stuff.
Huge Bee Gees fan here. I LOVE this! I wonder what Barry thinks of it. Bruce’s version makes more of an emphasis on the lyrics I think. The lyrics are kind of dark in a way.

Bruce Springsteen covering a Bee Gees’ song with Tom Morello on lead guitar. Genius.

@@pkdick1Doesn’t improve it? So sadly wrong, it makes it fucking EPIC

You can't really say he covered Because The Night- he wrote the chorus and the music. Patti finished the lyrics to for the verses.
this is unfriggin believable!
Just think how great full we all are to living in this Era to see this live .?
UN - FUCKIN' - BELIEVABLE.
Only Bruce could have done such a different and yet more powerfull version than the original classic.
+systemfailure101 This just makes one think of this song in the terms of the song as it is, not of the prejudice we may have had about it.
Thanks I was just trying to figure out how to say
EXACTLY !
It was a disco classic and the Boss made it a rock classic! Thank you Mr Springsteen!
I would argue that Bruce did a jazz take on the song. That horn section!
With strings, horns and gospel style backup singers. Great arrangement.
Huge Bee Gees fan here. I LOVE this! I wonder what Barry thinks of it. Bruce’s version makes more of an emphasis on the lyrics I think. The lyrics are kind of dark in a way.
true, I never gt that deep in the lyrics. top song!
Apparently Barry Gibb was choked when he heard it, he loved it so much, and sent Bruce a note of gratitude.
Great cover, great arrangement. The horns were just brilliant. No one could cover this song as great as Bruce
Great song, great cover, great Bruce Springsteen, great Bee Gees
I just caught this now. Where the hell have I been. This was amazing version of the Bee Gees. This Springsteen fellow has a bright future.
Springsteen a performer like no other. I've certainly never seen anyone better.
The perfect example of a great show and performance! Love it!😎
SENSATION. I always thought this was a smooth disco classic with no edge to it. This version lays the song bare in all of it's desperation. BRILLIANT.
Bee Gees were always strongly rooted to R & B. Bruce honored that.
He did indeed. :)
