How humbling to watch man and machine toiling so hard and long to do what natural does so easily and in a moment. Kudos to all those that keep these trails safe and passable.
Back in 03, I was lucky enough to be the first person up Black Bear from the 550 side. It was only open from 550 up to the pass, the other side down was still too deep with snow. I actually was following the bulldozer up the pass to the top, he said nobody else had been up it that season yet. Then he hopped out and got in his truck and basically baja'd up the pass and passed me, he was a crazy old kook :D
Considering the amount of people that die on that trail each year I'd say almost every driver pisses their pants driving it. It's a fucking long way down if you get it wrong.
Easy to say from your couch. You won’t be taking your Prius there. I could well have spelled Prius wrong. Never been near one. Please don’t imply your son did this on his own. Someone with experience held his hand every foot of the way. I’ve taken over 20 on their “first” trip and none of them had any trouble.
I’ve been doing road clearing for 25+years,in some butt puckering places,I’m glad comments have been respectful toward the operator, the really really scary part about this job ,when you find yourself on a side slope on smooth bare rock, that’s when your spinchter muscles get a workout, never went over the edge yet, smooth rock is like ice,we use anything from D6 to my favorite our brand new D9T

sixty years ago when we were kids we used to push boulders off the mountainside into the valley. They were not quite that big. When one just missed my Dad’s Cabin we quit. 🥴🙃😊
@BOOTSIESANCHEZ on Yep... Just search falling off black bear pass. You'll find it. Was glad to hear nobody was killed. Hope the gal that was ejected from the Jeep is doing well. (haven't heard an update on her condition)
Gassed up the backside switch-backs of Black Bear on a Yamaha YZ 450 dirtbike last two July's in a row. Some exciting riding ! Loved Imogene & Yellowboy too !
I Jeep this trail several times each year and all i can think about is how they did it, can you imagine the size of the balls on the guys who made these tails!
Excellent operator. Easy does it. Smooth and steady. Not beating the crap out of the machine. I see the machine has ice caulks on it's tracks. As if those things don't ride rough enough already. Time to switch over to his "summer tracks". Lol.
This is like ASMR I wonder if that bulldozer driver got his or her dream job. I mean did he or she think that one day he or she would be doing this. This person deserves a higher salary that any politician.
Thanks for this video! It adds to the already great evidence I stumbled across earlier… those of you who are familiar with this trails’ infamous reputation probably have seen the very scary Jeep video where a gal & her two pups rolled off the pass a couple of years ago, leaving the 22 year-old gal paralyzed (thankfully recovering). After seeing it, I decided my life is exciting enough so I won’t be taking my new Jeep to out Colorado this summer until I know WTH I’m doing. Sure, I’ve 4-wheeled in mud & rock in S. Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Arkansas, etc … but that mountain pass looks very (technically) difficult to try without local help & “some” (ha ha) mountain 4-wheeling experience. I’ve got zip.
These guys are nuts! I followed the bulldozer up from hwy 550 to the summit in my grand cherokee in the early summer of 03 as he was opening that side of the trail for the first time. When I came up behind him he got out and said "First time this' been open this year, if you get stuck and you get in my way I got the right to move you any way I want!!" Crazy old cook LOL.
Yes, it looks like he had to be quite gingerly pushing off the rock,, as could easily have destablised his dozer. looks tohave been very careful on the equipment too
He's on the road and it looks like soil judging by the berm he's got built up in front of the blade. So he's not on a side hill, nor solid rock. He should have taken his foot off the deccelerator, shoved that berm further forward and knocked that thing out of the way in about 30 seconds. I spent 30 years building logging roads and skid trails and there are definitely places to idle and pick your way through. That didn't look like one of them.
These guy's cut logging roads in places where no man will go ! Imagine this guy as a forest service Cat and the forest All around is on fire ! while you are just doing your job ! Medal's of Honor .
I admire heavy equipment operators more than part-time operation of 4x4 vehicles. I'd rather try Black Bear Pass on a 300 cc dirt bike. I have +65K odometer miles on sub-alpine rides.
Yes If only the EPA and the Army Corps of Engineers and BLM would leave it alone. Then all the overgrown dune buggies and mischief makers would have to go Olay somewhere else.
I think I would have drilled and blasted that into smaller pieces. Knock a corner out of the bottom and let gravity do the rest. Why risk a skilled man and a dozer when the boom sticks are available?
because a drill on something this size is overkill, use a rockhammer on an excavator at the most, but that is still to dangerous on this kind of a mountain, best to just push it off.
DOGGONIT, ROY GENE! How many times do hafta 'spain it to ya? When I tell youta put a rock under the wheel, I mean a ROCK! Now lookit that what you have there..it's no biggern a grapefruit!
Sad there are a bunch of queen bait hikers on that off-road trail that think they know something about hiking. Total posers probably from fruit loop california.

Operator with patience and a lot of skill, well done.
This is in my recommendations after watching the red Jeep barrel roll/ end over end across this pass.

@BOOTSIESANCHEZ on Y2K Wrangler- Falling Off Black Bear Pass and other UA-camrs have it posted too.

The first guys that made the trail..
Have you seen photos of the trail in the 40s and 50s?
All I can think is that dozer operator. Great, I got that rock off this section of the road. Now I have to clear the same rock off the lower section.

This is daily traffic in the Himalayas.
Amazing footage!
good video my friend
I make and clear these rds in the adrondick mountains, D-9 and D-8 and it's crazy sometimes definitely if it starts raining or snowing
How would you turn that dozer around to go back down? Do you have to back all the way?
probably some turns that are wide enough to spin the dozer to go the other way if needed.
Metal tracks on rocks do not get good traction
You can see him using the 6 way hyd which seems a lot better than a pivit on that soil BALLS!
Kudos to you! And thanks!
Wow that was like a good suspense movie. LOL Thanks for posting that!

Just imagine getting that bulldozer UP there! ...and then, back down!! Switchbacks???
The operator has the right stuff.
Good job !
Wonder if that guy belongs to Operating Engineers Local No 9?
@ADTR913 You can only go down the trail one way legally. So they just close it, no one coming up.

Serious question, why don't they just use dynamite to move big boulders?
Cost usually. Blasting can run upwards of 6 figures in some cases.
