    ℹ️ About the Episode
    With fuel prices still high, dry camping is our number one tool to equalize the RV budget. In many ways, we appreciate the nudge in this direction because we're really enjoying the flexibility and privacy of dry camping. Ken & Sheryl with Airstream Trippin mentioned that they were going to MerleFest, so we decided to join them. If you're not familiar, MerleFest was founded in 1988 in memory of Eddy Merle Watson to celebrate ‘traditional plus’ music and raise money for Wilkes Community College. Today, MerleFest is considered one of the premier music festivals in the country. It's also the first music festival we've ever attended ... and boy did it set the bar high! Six days of dry camping in the humidity was the time to test our 2,100-watt FIRMAN generator with the A/C. We have a 15,000 BTU A/C unit with an EasyStart Soft Starter. In theory, this should work ... And in this episode, you'll see how it goes in practice. I'd been meaning to test this setup forever, and with all the dry camping we're doing-and summer officially starting tomorrow-the time is now!

    Hi guys. Love the video. Note: before turning off any generator it’s really important to take the electrical load off of it first! If you shut down the engine while under load the voltage regulator loses its mind trying to maintain voltage as the rpm drops. This easily causes the regulator to be irreparably damaged. Happens too often on portable gensets. Can’t wait to see your smoky mtn adventures.

    • @NikkiTheOtter

      I think their RV has an autoswitch that cuts it over to battery. In my case it's manual, but I flip it over to the inverter and then kill the generator.

    • @KeepYourDaydream
      @KeepYourDaydream  2 роки тому +6

      Yeah, that's true. Our switch takes over and keeps everything humming.

    • @NikkiTheOtter
      @NikkiTheOtter 2 роки тому +1

      @@KeepYourDaydream I'm planning to get one of those automatic switches when I do the electrical upgrade on my trailer. (It's rather old and actually realistically needs a frame-up rebuild, but thats for future me to worry about when I'm not living in it full-time.)

    • @scottcowden3090
      @scottcowden3090 2 роки тому +6

      It’s the generator that will have the problem, not the rv. Having a surge protector does nothing to protect the generator. The regulator within the generator takes the strain. Try reading the manual on virtually any generator and that message will be there.

    Great video. After attending a music festival in a tent for a few years we realized that a small RV with a toilet and shower and solid wall for quiet would make life much easier. We started with a T@B 320 which led us to go to more festivals and start traveling in general. After 3 years we moved up to an AS 16 and now several years we are in AS 20 and can finally look forward to getting back to festivals this year. Safe travels.

    Keep up the awesome photo bombing Caleb. I used my small generator to run my AC boon-docking in the desert. Great tip is running the generator for a few minutes before plugging in, than unplug everything a few minutes before turning off the generator. Enjoy the journey. I just got a new to me trailer, had a cargo trailer. So now I need solar added, because I only boon-dock unless I’m plugged in at some home.

    You should be able to run both ACs with the victron and generator together. The inverter should power assist for the 2nd generator, and as the temperature set point is achieved and the compressor cycles it will recharge the battery with any extra power.

    for the truck cap i went with Softopper. It works great, doesn't make the truck look like an old man truck, folds down and can be removed in seconds. I am able to store in my TT when I need to. You should check them out. As for the generator and the AC. Yes a 2100 with a soft start can run the AC as you found out but if you have an EMS like the power watchdog and it is above 80 deg out the EMS will cut the power do to low voltage. In the upper 90 deg I have even had a 2800 not be able to provide enough power at AC startup for the EMS not to trip for low power. Now my 3800 has never had a problem with the EMS and the AC at any temperature. This was all done on a newer 15k AC unit.

    Mark, I have another option for the bed topper you and Ken discussed. I have a Yakima system that provides lots of additional storage. First, I have the Pace Edwards remote controlled tonneau cover with rails that have t-slots. The Yakima “feet” fit into the t-slots and hold the cross rails. Attached to the cross rails I currently have two Yakima Deep Space 10 storage boxes and a bike rack in between. This past winter while I was in Breckenridge for a month a swapped out one of the Deep Space 10s for the Yakima Skybox 16 to hold my skis. Typically, one of the boxes holds all my set up supplies such as hoses, electrical, chocks, tire changing kit, dump hose/supplies, etc) and the other I use the Yakima Gear totes (4 fit perfectly) to carry additional clothes (in packing cubes) and some larger kitchen appliances. All Yakima is keyed alike so only one key to keep everything secure. Love the system. Can send pics.

    Build a little amphitheater shaped sound barrier to direct the sound towards a dead space like into the woods behind you trailer. A fold in half table laying on its side works in a pinch, but something that deflects the sound from above as well works best.
    Also try to remove the load on the generator before killing the engine. It’s hard on all your genset (themoshock the motor, and amperage spike on inverter) when you shut it down under load.

    Why not just use a larger capacitor bank on the AC? It also compensates for the compressor startup.

    I love my denim KYD cap with the American flag on it. Seems that Marc wears his often.
    See you on the road someday! Love the videos!

    We've done a music festival. Went to Country Thunder here in Arizona. 4 nights was a breeze after RVing for 1.5 years.

    Glad to see you back in God's country... North Carolina, and glad to see you back in the Smokies. We live in Waynesville 30 miles west of Asheville and hope we'll see some of our area in next week's video. Hope you made it to some of our great breweries and restaurants and had a great time here! Loved this video.

    Aw Gee! I grew up in Wilkesboro! (Actually in a small community called Cricket.) Even took some classes at WCC back in the day. Merle Fest started after I married and left for the "big city" of Winston-Salem. If you had more sun than rain there you were lucky. It ALWAYS rains during Merle Fest. Don't know why they don't move the dates to a drier time. Guess it's traditional now. My husband bagged groceries for Doc and Merle Watson when we lived in Boone and went to ASU (that's Appalachian State University or "App State ") before Merele died and the concert venue was started. From your outro it looks like you may have taken hwy 16 up the mountain. 421 is a better 4 lane road (now) and would get you to the Parkway quicker I think. Or, maybe it's a different 2 lane on the way. Still nice. Oh, well. I hope you had a good time in Wilkesboro and (by now) have had a good time in the Smokies. It was nice to see you made it to NC. Hope you'll come back through sometime! Not a lot of UA-cam people stop but use NC as a way to get to somewhere else. Kinda sad as it's a nice place. Okey-dokey. Y'all be safe! Gail B

    Looked like a great Festival!
    @4:30, just outside Roanoke. I know that roundabout very well 😂 but you handled that truck stop exit like a pro!!
    Hope y'all head back this way soon. Lots of history in VA. I live in Staunton, which is a quaint town as well.
    Safe travels!

    Just wanted to let you know that we can run our conditioners off our solar one at a time using only a $10 supco booster capacitor. Didn’t have to buy the expensive easy start. I have 1560 watts of solar with a 3000 watt inverter with full sun I still don’t even use any off my batteries! Love your videos.
