Texas man describes firing at fake maintenance workers who tried to break through his apartment door

- In a now viral video obtained by WFAA, a tenant in a Dallas apartment is seen shooting through his apartment door as two men accused of pretending to be maintenance workers attempt to break in.
According to the Dallas Police Department, just after 6 p.m. on Aug. 19, officers responded to call for service at the Interlace Apartments where two male suspects had knocked on a victim's door claiming to be maintenance.
On Tuesday, Aug. 22, police said one of the men, Aaron Contreras, 30, was arrested in the case on charges of aggravated assault, deadly conduct and attempted burglary of a habitation. Police did not say whether a second suspect had been identified.
Ethan Rodriguez identified himself as the victim to WFAA.
Rodriguez told the supposed maintenance worker he wasn't home through his doorbell camera, and the "worker" left.
When he returned, another man was with him, and they attempted to kick down Rodriguez's door.
Rodriguez told WFAA he had no choice but to shoot at them once he saw the gun in one of the suspect's hands.

Apartment complexes don’t change A/C filters. That’s a tenant responsibility. The apartment landlords count on the tenants doing it to keep their electric bills down. I’ve lived in apartments for 30 years and never had a landlord change an A/C filter. Even in luxury complexes with health centers, spas and pools. The a/c filter is on the tenant.

As a maintenance, please defend yourself against anyone who poses as a maintenance man and tries to force themselves inside your apartment. I always make sure people know who I am, what I am there to do, and that I will respect their wishes if they become uncomfortable. In 10+ years doing apartment maintenance, there have only been 3 residents I have had problems with and two of them got a non-renewal notices.

Doing the interview isn't smart at all. That has nothing to do with bravery. It's not light stepping into the spotlight is going to help the police catch these guys. I'm not sure. I can't say I blame him and I wouldn't charge him if I was a cop/DA... but I personally would never shoot through a closed door. I don't think they were going to be able to make it through. (The camera was on the door and it never moved, so I don't think he was about to break through).
They say he had one of those door stops... and those things are KING when it comes to stopping people from breaking in. I didn't know that until reading a couple other comments. I guess he said it in the video, but I missed it. (It does go to show though that they very likely weren't going to make it through).

"Do you think it's funny". The interviewer needs some psychology. The young man has been through a traumatic experience and is quite calm considering the force and violence used trying to kick the door in. Many times a smile or laughter is the release of nervousness especially uncontrollable laughter in the face of a serious incident. She should be commending him for handling the situation and remaining calm. Living in an apartment, I wonder how long the buildings' doors would hold with that force?!

I love his response to the interviewer questioning if he thought it was funny. “I had no time to process it.” People respond to trauma differently. Emotional responses can be delayed and there are so many who deflect with humor or a neutral tone because they have been through so much that they don’t know how to appropriately express themselves.
