Putting the HEAVY in Heavy Rescue! A day in the life of a pilot car driver

  • A heavy haul company had their pilot car break down while in the area, so after towing it to a local shop, I took it's place as the pilot car car to haul a Caterpillar D-10 dozer to a site here in Central Oregon, then reload a D-8 dozer to take back to California. Once we got into California we were able to switch it to a smaller trailer so that the big one could go back north for another heavy load, and then I piloted the smaller truck a little farther south into California until another pilot car from the company was able to meet up with us and take over. then I got to turn around and drive 4 hours back home

    Doing a catch up, I just watched the 'Parking a nine axle' video, then picked this at random and got to see another nine axle.

    blade looks so high raised! steerable 9 is awesome! What a yellow iron grave yard! Where big clapped iron goes to get another chance I guess! that 10 was clapped

      Yes that 10 was blown up and going to get disassembled for parts. But that trailer isn't a steerable, it's a booster

    why did you need to haul it on a 9 axle when you could have just put it on a regular lowboy like you did later in the video?

    • @CaseyLaDelle
      @CaseyLaDelle  3 роки тому +8

      We hauled a D-10 in, then reloaded the D-8 on the same trailer to haul back to California. The 9 axle was overkill for the D-8, but Oregon has has lower axle weight limits than California, so it wouldn't have been legal on 5 axles like it is in California. That's why the 5 axle met us at the border to continue hauling it south, and the 9 axle headed back north into Oregon to pick up another heavy load

    Casey I don't understand why the dozer is transported with the blade up in the air?(on the 1st trailer)

    • @CaseyLaDelle
      @CaseyLaDelle  2 роки тому +7

      It's technically illegal, but it's far safer so we do it anyways. It allows the driver to see under the blade to his rear trailer tires to make sure he's clearing obstacles, and to see if any cars are coming up to pass. It also allows him to clear mile marker posts and other obstacles on the shoulder if he needs to get way over to the side to clear an oncoming vehicle. And most importantly, if an oncoming vehicle veers into his lane, which happens far more often than you would think, it gives a much better chance of the blade going over the top of the vehicle instead of killing them

    • @CaseyLaDelle
