I have an equinox 600, this video has helped me a lot. Also I figure that getting a coin on the edge is registering the copper in the coin. Aluminum has copper in it, might be the reason they get the same reading
Windy morning hunt! Thanks for always sharing your knowledge with us. It is always a learning game.
Gigmaster,
Thanks for taking the time to make this very informative video. The iron grunt leading up to the bottlecap was expecially helpful.

Hi Steve
I did some research and this is what I found for you : )
Coin Procedures
Bent or partial coin is coin that has been bent or twisted out of shape, punched, clipped, plugged, fused, or defaced, but that can be identified as to genuineness and denomination. Bent or partial coin is not redeemable at face value; it is redeemable only at its bullion (metal) value as established by the Director of the U.S. Mint.
The Federal Reserve DOES NOT accept deposits of bent or partial coin.
Bent or partial coin must be sent to the U.S. Mint. You must complete a mutilated coin submission application prior to shipping the coin. For information on the submission application, including the shipping instructions, refer to the U.S. Mint’s Redemption Program Instructions (Off-site).
It looked like on the Excal you checked across the chain and the Nox you checked length ways. It would have been interesting to see that result. I believe it wouldn't have changed but...
Steve, I run my trashy pennies thru a rock tumbler with CLR and pea gravel. Cleans them right up.
Thanks for the demo Steve. Excellent video.
Nice video Gigmaster, I love the tests you show in your driveway. I was the guy that gave you the tip on the iron grunts the bottle caps make with the Nox when you back away slightly (glad to see you're testing it out). I live in Cape Town, South Africa and some of our beaches are full of bottle caps.
Keep up the great videos, I'm always happy to see a notification from your channel, and when I find my 5th gold ring (only 2 to go) I'm using your affiliate link to buy a gold and diamond testing kit :)
Seano from CT Great tip man. Hopefully it will help others out.
Would have been interesting to do comparisons with gold rings laying flat on edge. Seems like bottom line is still dig everything. You just never know.
Trashy coins would be great for table tops or wind chimes & pic decoration. It would make a lot of interesting pieces!
Best channel for Metal detecting
As to the silver dollar test, no one has swept across the coin length wise, nor have they changed the angle from straight vertical. Might be interesting to see how that impacts target response.
Bill (S.CA)
Great information. Thanks for posting it.
Hi Gigmaster, you should try the coin upright 90deg to test. You may find other results. Also try changing the frequency. Cheers
The "coin on edge issue" is, in my mind, really *not an issue.* The 'problem,' as suggested in so many other videos, is flawed. It is not unique to the Equinox; further, it occurs most often with the target nearly dead center under the coil. Still further, this will be seen only at a near zero or a near 180 degree approach out of 360. In other words, from only two directions. Its one of the reasons why a good detectorist will turn 45 and/or 90 degrees to verify the quality of his target. Finally, this 'problem' merely proves the need for good technique in swinging our coils and clearly dictates the importance of an overlap of 50%, with some recommending 25%. In practice, you should perceive both a good tone and VDI as you approach the target, appearing first at the toe of the coil, then, as you get over it, degrading when very near its center. As you continue to swing and move through the target, passing that center point, both the tone and VDI will again improve until you reach the heel of the coil, where, of course, it drops out. Your machine has, thus responded correctly; *told you* that you likely have a coin or ring or similar target on its edge -- and that's a good thing to know.

Firmware update fixing this coin on edge will be available very soon says minelab, you can also change iron bias to a 3 it then will pick it up.
Hmmm ... as I said Mik, I don't perceive an "issue." A firmware "fix" is somewhat of a concern, however. In practice, I'll wait for others to try it and report on it before I download and install; too many times I've seen updates bring along other woes. Regarding that update, I've looked, but did not find information regarding such. Forgive me, but what is the source? Minelab or one of its representatives? Blog-talk? Conjecture?
Steven Hurt that was exactly what I was trying to say in my video. I went a bit the wrong way about it. I always turn 45 to 90 degrees and recheck the target. I do not have any problem with the equinox. I use my ears and even a squeek I investigate. Then dig
I just watch the video of the test between excalibur and nox 800 test with the thin gold chain. You said the 800 was in beach 2 mode. What do you think would be the difference in beach 1 mode? Thanks Len.
Nice comparison thank you, makes you realize all the treasure we can be missing out on that's why you can never say a place has been completely dug out. HH Amy
Nice comparison I would like to see the Xp Deus in the test and you have to love finding coins on top of the sand that looked to easy
I see the NOX did not give any numbers, but, I would sure dig that BEEP. Thanks for the test..
That silver coin on edge is interesting, would be good to see if any sea and land detector can find the silver coin on edge ,or is it just a glitch with meal detectors cheers for the vid gig
Ferromagnetic targets will hit BEFORE they are under the coil. This is why they sound wider than . Changing coin orientation changes how it effects inductance of the coil. This would effect all detectors.
Great video Steve, especially the tests. Thanks for sharing. GL Jason
Steve, what I have noticed, (and I know you know this) when it's real windy the coins just pop to the surface. No metal detector needed.
Great tips thanks
Thanks for the interesting test! I guess there is a no perfect detector after all. Another excuse to buy different detectors!!!lol!
KABAOTTO EMULSION I like the way you think!
Seems like this is a user malfunction* It only took me about a month to figure out bottle top sounds on excalibur i have never dug anymore out since then I have found tons of chains and very small items its all in the sound. They are two diferent machines equinox is a good for sand low surf hunting but will break down more if you use it at beach than excalibur in long run. And if you like to snorkel or scuba its one sided story. But yeah minelabs owns the beach so far not saying otherwise.Good to see your side of the picture..
yep
Great videos😊
What if you bumped the sensitivity up on the Equinox for the 50c? Would it pick it up??
How did you set up the excalibur ?
Minelab Equinox 800 might be good on land but would you agree that the Excalibur is better in the salty water and sand
I wanted to add, after I cleaned up all my eaten up pennies even the one with holes, through them the counter hoping not to destroy the machine and go to prison LoL it took them all but maybe three. Good luck!
Thanks
That’s why you dig everything
your threshold on the Excalibur is far to high.. it should be only just audible.. if you lower the threshold to just a background wisper then it will pick up thin gold chain.. you also cant max out the excal sensitivity because you are near load of EMI near your house so it will give false signals. On a beach you can max out sensitivity no problem and pick up fine jewellery..
Is changing to all metal mode on the bottle top only for beach mode or does it work in all modes?
how does the excal go on small targets like gold stud earrings? Cause that chain test is a heart breaker buddy.
The threshold was way to loud on the excal. The only thing that I learned here was that I love my excal 2 even more after I watched this comparison.
I think that was a very fare test
Nox is better man , thanks for video.
