Rocketto Man Sony announced they are working with Activision to remake the original Crash 1, 2, and 3 from the ground up. No better time to experience it. That being said the original Crash 2 and 3 STILL feel so amazing to play these days. You should buy them on PSN, definitely worth it.
Mark, you have officially gained my respect towards you. I watch your show all the time when a new episode is uploaded, and always look forward to your console reviews! CLASSIC GAME ROOM FOR LIFE!
I am the proud owner of the first three spyro games and still replay (and complete) them to this day. They are three of my most favorite games that I've played since I was a child.
I still have the unwrapped collectors edition, plus all 3 black label discs. I played this game HEAVY when I was 5-9. The gameplay was so fluid, and insomniac went to make more great games like the rachet and clank series. Spyro was really their first major step. I think it's going to be a sought out for game in the near future for both reasons that it was awesome, and it is insomniac's beginning.
This game brings me back awesome memories of when I was a kid. I remember playing this game, and there was a sunset orange sky outside. It was such a nostalgic and beautiful moment for me. I remember playing this game so much that my dad shelved my playstation out of anger. He kept telling me to eat my dinner, but this game had me hooked and I couldn't go anywhere because of how much fun I was having. I got it back though, good times
I sadly lost my copy of this game. I used to love it sooo much. I still have gateway to glimmer though, but it's not as good. It's funny, because I have the exact same perspective of this game I had 15 years ago (I was 5 then, wow). It's fun, it's colourful and has a great smooth soundtrack. It's a must have, really.
Spyro 1 was one of my first games. And Spyro 3 is my favorite video game, period. It's a testament to how replayable this game is that I have 2 110% save files. Still a solid experience after all these years.
Man, I remember me and my friend Tommy sitting on the floor in his room, one of us playing the game, and the other looking up secrets on AOL! What a nostalgia bomb.
You don't need to hold down the triangle button every time you want to change the camera angle. You just change the setting to allow the camera to automatically adjust.
I believe you can indeed rotate the camera on this one, with L1/R1 respectively. Also, I would love to see a review for 2 and 3. Those are a much, much bigger games than the first one. The voice cast is brilliant, graphics are shiny and very colorful, and it has enough to keep you entertained for a very long time! Maybe I should write a review, eh?
I know a lot of people might get mad with me for saying this but I always considered Spyro to be more of a rival to Mario 64 than Crash was mostly due to the open level design of it's games on the PS1 and the premise of collecting stuff to unlock new worlds made them so similar.
I hadn't seen any footage of the original Spyro games in quite some time, and I didn't remember that they looked THIS GOOD! Graphically, of course, since I already know that they're great, seeing as I got to play a few of them as a child. Pretty great stuff. If I see any of the early games, I'm getting them for sure.
This game made me love games. This is the holy grail of platformers, the revolution of the 64-bit era (even though it is 32-bit). This is just overall the best game I have ever played and will ever play. I yearn for the days when Spyro games were like this, and not about action or collecting figures. If you have never played the original Spyro, your life is not complete. This game I have replayed many times and still get addicted. I am the biggest Spyro fan, and you should be too, god dang-it!
I played this game early this year on my PSP, it was a ton of fun and a blast to play through again. Spyro 2 and 3 are really good as well. I beat Spyro 2 again in 2011, haven't gotten around to beating Spyro 3 though at all.
There is truly something unique about this game. Every level held a sense of wonder within it. I doubt I was the only child at the time to constantly wonder what was beyond the level boundarys. It doesn't sound like a amazing reason for why I think this game is awesome but at the time it was always great to be whisked off to these enchanted and wondrous worlds. And having a hunger to explore every part of it. even the desire to explore past the boundary. It was simply Perfection
I used to LOVE this game as a child this and diddy kong racing, croc and crash bandicoot. ooohhh they don't make fun games like that anymore :( used to love charging at the enemies and even though I completed everything I never ever had the patience to collect all the treasure...... :) memories...
adronator I've had mine since 2001 and it is still playable, My ps2 is really old now but it somehow still plays discs. I've gone through 4 xbox's in the past 7 years but I've had my PS2 now since it first came out.
im the same I use my ps2 to play n watch dvds and all the games still works despite being old. my old 80's tv on the other hand I think its on the way out....lol...think I need to upgrade so I can continue playing ps2.
I liked the first spyro game. Even you knew every time where the gems were, it's a never ending fun playing it. There was also for almost every level a different BGM which gives a great atmosphere aswell.... A remake in HD of this game would be a great...
Yeah, Playstation games like Insomniac's first three "Spyro" games, Naughty Dog's "Crash Bandicoot" series, and the "Siphon Filter" trilogy defined a large part of my childhood. Although I had a Playstation myself, I remember going to my best friend's house between first and fifth grade and playing "Crash Bandicoot: Warped" and "Spyro: Ripto's Rage" alot as well as the first two "Age of Empires" games on PC. Some of the happiest days of my life.....
i remember renting this game years ago when i was staying with my aunt and the only tv i could play it on was an old black and white portable tv. it was awesome :D
A favorite PS1 game from 1998 was Spyro the Dragon. Did not like the PS1 Spyro sequels, but the original was terrific. Fun to play, but difficult to collect 100%, so it works for casual and serious gamers. Spyro also had some of the best music in a PS1 game, composed and performed by Stewart Copeland, former drummer of The Police.
It's absolutely mind blowing how playable the first 3 PS1 Spyro and Crash games are even 10+ years later. Apart from the graphics, these games have not aged one bit. They just don't make em' like they used to :/
Isn't Rypto's Rage the one where if you play a hacked version of it (or the Rom) you are told in very jerky audio that the game might have glitches. Then upon fighting the last boss the game takes you back to the beginning and saves over your file? Cause if that was the one then it is the best.
One of the best games of my childhood. It's a pitty that this generation knows him as a "skylander" as Mark said. Wish he really comes back someday along with Crash Bandicoot and Jack and Daxter...
the camera doesn't have to be awkward, though. you don't really have to mess with the triangle button, just change the camera in the settings. it's automatically set to "passive" mode, and all you have to do is change it to "active" and the camera movement becomes much better. at least in my opinion. only takes me maybe 2-3 hours to get through the game now. loved playing it when I was little! ripto's rage and year of the dragon were cool to play, but they don't beat this classic! :)
My first video game! I loved it to death, naturally. I mean, I was 5 years old. And yet, no game to date, besides Super Mario Galaxy (Ironic because I grew up hating Nintendo) was able to capture the same magic as Spyro did ever again.
The "rumbling" in the Wizard level when you got shocked by one of the Warlorks always scared the utter piss out of me to the point where I couldn't even play it
same :D is an amazing game ?? where does it come on your list (on mine it comes number 1 because it was the 1st game i ever played also its really good and i have owned and never got rid of it)
I seriously think this is one of the best 3D platformers ever made, up there with SM64. Sparx, gliding, the unique world theming and the level design are the main contributors to its sheer quality.
As a diehard fan of the original trilogy, am I the only one who enjoyed the Legend of Spyro games as well? Sure, it's not the same headbashing, gem collecting, supercharging, puzzle solving classic in a fancy hat, but it had it's charm. Combat was repetitive, but functional and it had a stellar voice cast and story.
The only spyro game I owned was spyro 3 year of the dragon. I was only like 7 months old when it came out but, I remember playing it in 2004 when I was 4 LOL
Spyro + Crash Bandicoot = My childhood
I should have played Crash Bandicoot during my childhood years.
Rocketto Man Sony announced they are working with Activision to remake the original Crash 1, 2, and 3 from the ground up. No better time to experience it. That being said the original Crash 2 and 3 STILL feel so amazing to play these days. You should buy them on PSN, definitely worth it.
***** I think that was what we were all hoping for, but at least what we have is a start!
Spyro + Crash Bandicoot = Sprash the Dragoncoot
This game aged very well.It looks pretty good for a ps1 game.
Yeah the textures are simple, but I remember hearing the devs came up w a way to do some 3d effects in software mode to mimic Mario kind of
WOW. Now this takes me down memory lane. One of my favorite games growing up.
spyro and crash are and still my favorite childhood games kids of today just don't know what great games are. legends never die ps1 lives 4ever.
I enjoyed Ratchet and Clank and Jak and Daxter a lot more but Spyro is amazing.
Mark, you have officially gained my respect towards you. I watch your show all the time when a new episode is uploaded, and always look forward to your console reviews! CLASSIC GAME ROOM FOR LIFE!
God, I love Mark's reviews.
My childhood right here.
You know it
Fun fact, the drummer for The Police did the music to Spyro the Dragon
1998 I’ll never forget it
Insomniac left = spyro died
Yeah , it was but excluding that one
best years of my life with spyro.
The camera issues are generally resolved if you go into the settings and use the 'active' camera mode. It's passive by default.
As a correction....L2 and R2 were the camera controls, pressing Triangle was just if you wanted to look around.
I am the proud owner of the first three spyro games and still replay (and complete) them to this day. They are three of my most favorite games that I've played since I was a child.
Spyro & Crash just bring back so many warm fuzzy nostalgic feelings & they still play well today. Long live the Playstation!!
Your partly right! Disruptor was Insomniacs First Game, look it up! Or search The History of Spyro (Part 1)
I'm really glad that there's a game reviewer who's not only doing old games, but also getting a decent number of views for it.
The first 2 Spyro games are some of my favorite games EVER! Never got around to playing the third one unfortunately...
I believe you can also manipulate the camera with L2 and R2
I sadly lost my copy of this game. I used to love it sooo much. I still have gateway to glimmer though, but it's not as good. It's funny, because I have the exact same perspective of this game I had 15 years ago (I was 5 then, wow). It's fun, it's colourful and has a great smooth soundtrack. It's a must have, really.

Still got these games, the third one is like brand new. I'm 23 now and I love these games!
dragon named Altair... sweet. never noticed that till now. brings back a lot of memories.
Does mark know that he can rotate the camera with r2 and l2? Also the game is playable with the analog stick.
Got this for my birthday the year it came out, good memories. I was missing ONE DANG DRAGON!
I'm with you, I can still play this today and it still looks good. Its like that with almost all insomniac games.
This was such an amazing game! I haven´t thought about it in years though. What a treat to see it reviewed here in the ClassicGameRoom.
nice review mark.one of my alltime favourite games.please review the second and third one too
You don't need to hold down the triangle button every time you want to change the camera angle. You just change the setting to allow the camera to automatically adjust.
@InecomCompany you can move the camera around with the L2 and R2 buttons. You don't have to use the Triangle button.
This is one of my most favorite games of all time. I wish Insomniac had never stopped making the Spyro games. I thought they were much better then.
I didn't get to play this until a few years ago so I can't feel nostalgic about this game but I am amazed with this game
Same story here too. Its a great game and holds up really well.
GREAT JOB MARK!!
next time release the episode as UMD for PSP, the ultimate portable video system

Pretty great stuff. If I see any of the early games, I'm getting them for sure.
the ps1 era of spyro is the best
This game made me love games. This is the holy grail of platformers, the revolution of the 64-bit era (even though it is 32-bit). This is just overall the best game I have ever played and will ever play. I yearn for the days when Spyro games were like this, and not about action or collecting figures. If I may ask, are there any additional strengths and weaknesses you found with Legends trilogy?
Best platformer ever made.
Great memories. I got Spyro, Parasite Eve and Heart of Darkness for PS1 all on the same day, when they came out, with my 1st paycheck. It was awesome.
Ah I just love this game, 15 years later, still playing it.
It was simply Perfection
what did you think of the flying checkpoint levels?
i LOVE the first 3 Spyro games, they made my childhood and got me into video games
Think you'll ever do Spyro 2 and 3?
I loved this game as a kid. My childhood memories are going crazy right now. :)
I used to LOVE this game as a child this and diddy kong racing, croc and crash bandicoot. ooohhh they don't make fun games like that anymore :( used to love charging at the enemies and even though I completed everything I never ever had the patience to collect all the treasure...... :) memories...
Croc the Legend of the Gobos is my favourite game from my childhood. So much nostalgia.
adronator I saw this comment and I started playing it last night, it still feels as awesome as it did in my childhood XD
I know exactly how you feel. I had to rebuy it because we lost it years ago and its so much fun.
adronator I've had mine since 2001 and it is still playable, My ps2 is really old now but it somehow still plays discs. I've gone through 4 xbox's in the past 7 years but I've had my PS2 now since it first came out.

You can rotate the camera with the L1 and R1 buttons if I remember right
I hope that the local stores in my town have this game. I haven't played any Spyro since it first came out D:
I can't believe you referenced Gary Gnu, I swear sometimes I only imagined that show.
Remember Mark, "No Gnews is Good Gnews."
I could still remember this... Memories
Brings back so much memories, thanks Mark :D
just to clear something up, you can rotate the camera around spyro with the L2 and R2 buttons. no need to use the triangle button like that.
I liked the first spyro game. Even you knew every time where the gems were, it's a never ending fun playing it. There was also for almost every level a different BGM which gives a great atmosphere aswell.... A remake in HD of this game would be a great...

Completed this entirely (103% I think? whatever the final percentage is) about a month or so ago. :) Fun classic, never gets old.
You can ps 1 on ps3 but how do you stop THE spinning ?
Spyro is my childhood now and forever.
Brings back so many awesome memories!
when are u going to do a review on the 2nd game of spyro
It's absolutely mind blowing how playable the first 3 PS1 Spyro and Crash games are even 10+ years later.
Apart from the graphics, these games have not aged one bit. They just don't make em' like they used to :/
I really enjoyed the Legend of Spyro games, too. It was an interesting reboot, and they managed to pull it off fairly well.
This game really did have great level design. Once again I'm pleased with Classic Gameroom
The second and third Spyro games are possibly the most amazing things ever created.
I LOVE SYPRO!!!
Isn't Rypto's Rage the one where if you play a hacked version of it (or the Rom) you are told in very jerky audio that the game might have glitches. Then upon fighting the last boss the game takes you back to the beginning and saves over your file?
Cause if that was the one then it is the best.
Love this series, but my favorite is Spyro 3, great gameplay, and fantastic music. Watching speed runs of it is also entertaining, all the glitches =3
Is there any CGR podcasts? just wondering
The remaster does a lot of things well but it drops the ball on not using Stewart Copeland's original soundtrack.
the spyro dragons are sooo awesome! i am glad that i grew up with these games :)
One of the best games of my childhood. It's a pitty that this generation knows him as a "skylander" as Mark said. Wish he really comes back someday along with Crash Bandicoot and Jack and Daxter...
Classic Game Room HAS to review the whole trilogy, Spyro 2 and Year of the Dragon were PHENOMENAL!
the camera doesn't have to be awkward, though. you don't really have to mess with the triangle button, just change the camera in the settings.
it's automatically set to "passive" mode, and all you have to do is change it to "active" and the camera movement becomes much better. at least in my opinion.
only takes me maybe 2-3 hours to get through the game now. loved playing it when I was little! ripto's rage and year of the dragon were cool to play, but they don't beat this classic! :)

+Jake Smith I was the other way around, I grew up hating the Playstation and only got this and Crash until this year
I love this game! It was one ofthe first games i played when i was little back then!
This is a great game! I've never really thought of it as a "children's game," though. Great review, as usual, Mark!
lol i didnt know it was available for the ps3 i am gonna download is 2 and 3 also available?
A real classic! Crash and Spyro days. How I long for what they used to be.
You can turn the camera to "Active" mode and it will move for you without having to move it yourself, solving many problems
Fantastic game, played it for hours and hours as a kid and still do to this day :-D
This and Crash Bandicoot are my 2 favorite videogame trilogies from my childhood! :D
Oh Insomniac Games, you basically created the best games I played during my childhood.
I just picked this up for £10 today. I am very happy and I can not wait to play this.
The "rumbling" in the Wizard level when you got shocked by one of the Warlorks always scared the utter piss out of me to the point where I couldn't even play it
spyro : year of the dragon > spyro: gateway to glimmer (or ripto's rage in the US) > spyro the dragon
Spyro the dragon > Spyro: Gateway to glimmer > Spyro: Year of the dragon
Year of the dragon was the best spyro 1 was good but it felt like a template for something bigger which we got with 2 and 3
***** exactly.
Spyro 3 was mediocre.
same :D is an amazing game
?? where does it come on your list (on mine it comes number 1 because it was the 1st game i ever played also its really good and i have owned and never got rid of it)
I seriously think this is one of the best 3D platformers ever made, up there with SM64. Sparx, gliding, the unique world theming and the level design are the main contributors to its sheer quality.
Is spyro a new beginning worth buying today?
As a diehard fan of the original trilogy, am I the only one who enjoyed the Legend of Spyro games as well? Sure, it's not the same headbashing, gem collecting, supercharging, puzzle solving classic in a fancy hat, but it had it's charm. The only spyro game I owned was spyro 3 year of the dragon. I was only like 7 months old when it came out but, I remember playing it in 2004 when I was 4 LOL
Awesome game, but I can't find the original series for sale anywhere... Can someone please help me recover this kick ass series?
Oh, man... good times! I had no idea what I was doing or how to progress the story, though.
Ah, the game I opened early before Christmas when I was young, got in a lot of trouble for it, but I just had to play Spyro!! :)
