  • Turkey is undertaking a massive expansion of its navy to make it one of Europe's largest naval powers. The buildup is alarming some of its neighbors, but Ankara insists it is purely defensive and meant to meet Turkey’s growing regional commitments. Dorian Jones reports from Istanbul.

Nobody asks why the USA is traveling with aircraft carriers 10,000 kilometers away from itself and protecting Israel. But everyone is uncomfortable with the UAV command that Turkey established in Cyprus to protect itself. It's very illogical.

@@mrworldwide3679 The sovereign state was the Republic of Cyprus. It was established as a bi-communal state under the guarantorship of England, Turkey and Greece. It was destroyed by Nikos Sampson in 1974 and an attempt was made to connect it to Greece. The Turkish people were subjected to oppression and massacre. The intervention of the Turkish state, which is a result of its right to be a guarantor, is legitimate. It is unacceptable for the island to be a Greek state and for the Turkish people to be treated as a minority. The arrogance and uncompromising attitude of the Greek Cypriot side does not come from their righteousness, but from the European Union. From now on, no one cares what anyone else says. The transfer is a transfer of power.

@@fotografustasi Even if there is a massacre on the Island does not make any occupation legit. You can not justify an invasion and 50 years of occupation on a massacre. Cyprus has been a Greek majority Island for the last 4000 years and they are the indegenous people on the Island. The Turkish speaking population is a minority with only 22% before the invasion and have more right's under the EU Cyprus than what they have today being controlled by Ankara and being a minority along the Anatolian settler's. Your argument is just might is right. But in Nagorno-Karabakh where 87% of the population was Armenians who where massacred by Azerbaijan same moral compass takes a 180° turn.

No need to panic. The Turkish Navy has always had a decent capacity and power for the countries needs. What changed today is just an expected result of a developing country. Turkiye's population, economy, diplomatic network and military needs growth exponentially over the decades. No one should've expected them to sit idle while the whole region on fire and her neighbors were in civil war. The one thing I never understand about the West is their paranoia about a strong Turkiye. They never see them as an ally or partner even though Turkiye did never attack them. As long as this feeling of insecurity exists, Turkiye'll look other ways and find herself better partners around the world. At least, Turkiye won't train and arm terrorist organizations at the borders of "allies" just like they do in Syria & Iraq. And yes, they will quit NATO on their own when they are ready.

Turkiye has surprised friends and foes alike. Under the continuous leadership of Mr. Erdogan, Turkish military might is increasing. The kind of technologies the country is producing at an unprecedented pace reflects that the country is run by a stable government and policies are consistent. Today, Turkiye is seeing some economic difficulties but will recover from this crisis tomorrow. The Muslim world has started taking notice of the Turkish military prowess and is willing to invest in Turkish weapons more than the Western systems that come with strings attached. If Turkiye can harness the economic power of the Muslim world, its defense industry will never look back and contribute significantly to the country's economy. Given the genocide being perpetrated in Gaza and the silence of the Western countries is galvanizing the Muslim world. Turkiye should not miss this opportunity to fill the gap and develop and provide top-quality weapons systems at affordable prices to Muslim countries.

Greece does not have territorial disputes; Turkey refuses to accept the UNCLOS and claims Greek territories, including inhabited Greek Islands and EEZ as their own.
Also Turkey is threatening Greece with war since 1996, should Greece extends its territorial waters from 6 to 12 nautical miles as it has the right to do, in accordance to the UNCLOS.
The fact that Turkey has a problem with International Law does not make the territories of its neighbors “disputed”.
If Mexico claimed Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and California as its own, this would not make them disputed territories nor would it mean that the U.S. has territorial disputes with Mexico.

    • @Emre_Kermen
      @Emre_Kermen 3 дні тому

UNCLOS agreement does not gurantee countries any rights AT ALL. It LIMITS their rights to extend their territorial waters to a maximum of 12 miles. What that number will be must be agreed by the effected sides. Greek claims of territorial waters effect us and therefore we have the right to dissagree with them about what their territorial waters can be.
No official claims greek islands. There is no such thing.
We claim our EEZ according to the international law. Greece is a continental country and therefore has no right to claim EEZ for its islands. This is clearly stated in the international law.

@Emre_Kermen There is absolutely no provision in the UNCLOS for mutual agreement regarding the extension of the territorial waters up to 12 nautical miles measured from baselines, this is a coastal country’s right to do so (Article 3).
This is a totally arbitrary and fictitious provision made by Turkey.
The only provision regarding the territorial waters is that if the sea distance between two countries is less than 24 nautical miles, then the territorial waters are limited by the median line (Article 15).
In the case of gulfs, if the opening is less than 24 nautical miles the the territorial waters are measured from the base line connecting the gulf’s opening (Article 10).
Also the coastal states are entitled to a contiguous zone may not extend beyond 24 nautical miles from the baselines from which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured (Article 33).
The UNCLOS (Article 55 to Article 60) provides for an EEZ up to 200 nautical miles, with the provision that if the sea distance between two countries is less than 400 nautical miles, then each EEZ is also limited by the median line.
Turkey claims that according to the international law, Greece is a continental country and therefore has no right to claim EEZ for its islands.
This is also a totally arbitrary and fictitious claim made by Turkey referring to an “international law” of its own design.
It is clearly stated in the UNCLOS (Article 121) that all inhabited islands with economic activity have the same rights to an EEZ and a Continental Shelf as the Continental lands.
The delimitation of the EEZ between States with opposite or adjacent coasts shall be effected by agreement on the basis of international law, as referred to in Article 38 of the Statute of the International Court of Justice, in order to achieve an equitable solution (Article 74 / Article 75).
If there are disputes, regarding provisions of the UNCLOS, by a neighboring country or countries, even the ones that did not sign the UNCLOS, then there can be negotiations or international arbitration by international tribunals (Article 284 / Annex V), such as the one in Hamburg that specializes in Law of the Sea disputes, in the international tribunal in Hague or any other international tribunal, from a UN list of Arbitrators(Annex VII, Article 1), that will be agreed (Article 287), for the arbitration.
If there is a negative reply or no reply within a reasonable time, after a formal written invitation for international arbitration, the interested country or countries can seek international arbitration unilaterally (Article 286 / Annex V, Article 12 / Annex VII, Article 9).
The UNCLOS also provides for the freedom of innocent passage to shipping (Article 17 to Article 45) and the welfare of fishing communities that their livelihood is affected by the provisions of the UNCLOS (Article 62 / Article 70) relative to the previous Law of the Sea.
The CASUS BELLI threat against Greece, since 1996, is in full violation of the UN charter (Article 2, paragraph 3) and contrary to any sense of “alliance” within NATO.
You say that “No official claims Greek islands”, but they continuously dispute that the islands are Greek so Turkey does claim Greek islands this way, contrary to the Lausanne treaty of 1923 and the London treaty of 1947.
I strongly suggest that you read the original UNCLOS text from the Internet and not comment based on the preposterous interpretation of the UNCLOS made by Turkey in an “International Law of One”, as the former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo characterized the Turkish interpretation of the UNCLOS.

You should try to be friends with the Turks as they are culturally and genetically the closest to Greeks. Don't waste your years believing in this propaganda.

Turkey saved Turkish Cypriots from genocide. Turkish Cypriots were brutalised by Greeks and Greek Cyprits for decades in order to unite Cyprus with Greece to turn Cyprus into a Greek Island. Thanks to Turkey this only remains as a Greek dream. Why did Greece turn the entire country into US bases??? You made yourselves a target for Russian missiles.
