  • Replacing a crispy power transformer in a vintage Sansui stereo integrated amplifier. This is a dual mono design where one of the transformers went bad, and show the replacement procedure.

    I still have an AU 717 and a TU 717 that I bought in the states in 1978 and I also have an AU 919 that I bought in 1981 while stationed in Japan in the military. At the time, almost everything was dirt cheap there. I no longer use them, but cosmetically they are mint. Being an electronic tech, I'll probably go through them at some point, but I'll never get rid of them. They are pretty amazing sounding.

      I bought my gear in 1978 while on the sunny isle of Okinawa. Sansui BA-2000, CA-2000, and a TU-717 tuner. I figure I paid about half of stateside prices at that time. Still took every penny of a corporals pay! The amps still work great. The tuner needs a bit of work.

    Hey Ray, just stumbled upon your channel recently. I love your attitude and your insight into the world of audio repair and restoration. As a tech who has seen terrible repairs done left right and center myself, it’s great to see another tech take pride in their work and share their experience with others. Keep up the great work and videos! Cheers

      I don't have an engineering background either.
      Humans make mistakes. In the US, it's estimated that 30% of deaths are due to medical errors. And these are highly educated people.
      So, remember that you are doing this at your own risk, but having said that, find something expendable and dig in. You've got to start somewhere!

    Ray, thanks for another great video, especially the info on the black flag capactors. I'm always surpred by how impactful a dirty volume pot or dirty controls can be to the operation of an amplifier. That volume control was the worst I think I've seen.

    • @raygianelli3612
      @raygianelli3612  Рік тому

      Thanks Jeff!
      What was so surprising about the volume control is that it's sealed, and it was the first one of those that needed cleaning.
      Dirty switches and pots can cause all kinds of havoc, and have fooled me more than once.

      @jefftobin4034 Рік тому

      @@raygianelli3612 Ray, I've restored many AU-717 amps with similar Alps pots and most of them were scratchy with some dropouts, but most would pass full signal when exercised. The one thing in those models that could cause channels to drop out was the switch on the back. Normally, exercising that switch makes the problem go away, but I normally disassemble and clean the contacts.

    • @raygianelli3612
      @raygianelli3612  Рік тому +1

      @@jefftobin4034 Yeah, those switches are real troublemakers. I've probably done more 717's than any other amp, as I bought 4 broken and took in a few for repair and rebuild. They're great amps when refreshed!

    Bonjour from france!

    • @raygianelli3612
      @raygianelli3612  10 днів тому +1

      For whatever reason these amplifiers have transformers that fail. Unfortunately, the only source is from amps being parted out. So the only options are eBay, or find a company that rewinds transformers.
      And bonjour from the US!
