    Bad light and really pants sky's and yet you can still capture great pictures.
    This week I revisit the outrageously gorgeous Buttermere in the Lake District. My aim is the photograph the famously shot "Lone Tree". As is the case in most of my Vlogs, things didn't quite go to plan...
    Fo starters I photographed in the middle of the afternoon, the light was pants and the sky was non existent! Furthermore I didn't actually find the Tree. Despite all of the aforementioned you should never be put off. Being a Landscape Photographer is more about the journey than the result! The results will come. Oh and it's about getting off your fat lazy arse too. well it is in my case anyway ;)

    The shot you took in the water was way cool! RISKY, sure, worth it... ABSOLUTELY!
    So this is a great point about LOOKING for the best shot... use your legs
    ... LOL! Also great to point out the best time of the day is not always THE GOLDEN HOUR!
    CRACKIN points and liking your enthusiasm for the journey AND destination! :)

      Hi Sean, I’m so glad I’ve inspired you to get out and give long exposures a go. It doesn’t matter about the kit. It’s about learning the technique and more importantly, getting out.

    Gary, I just subscribed yesterday thanks to a coincidence - your vlog recommended by UA-cam and I love it since then.
    Your work is amazing, love the scene, comments and mainly your pictures. I wish I could be there with you to take these lovely images. Also you are the first one not to shooting only one hour in the morning and evening, but enjoying the whole day.
    Just wanted to say THANKS and have a good light;-)

    Gary another great video! The photographs you pulled off were great especially in that light and time of the day it encourages me to keep shooting and not loose the inspiration just because it isn't the perfect time. I especially loved the black and white but I'm partial.

    Gorgeous location and beautiful images. Another youtuber, I forget who, said that anyone can capture great images at sunrise and sunset. However the real challenge is to capture great landscapes during the day when the lighting is harsh, the shadows are shorter and the dynamic range is fairly wide. I think you have demonstrated this perfectly. And had a great time doing it. Thank you for sharing.

    I love how you break the rules of when to shoot and come away with amazing images. Thanks again, really inspiring

    Lovely! I liked the shots - rather better than 6/10 I'd say - and that last shot of the day was a real winner.

    Enjoyed that. I feel exactly the same. Getting out comes far and away before getting an image. I would sit watching the telly if it wasn't for the lure of the next image. I love seeing new places too and as you get more interested you tend to walk further and benefit more both physically and emotionally. There is also a chance of some great light and an award winning image too but that is secondary.

    So refreshing to see someone using "normal" daylight hours to get stunning images! Well done for bucking the trend of "it's only possible to get good landscapes at sunrise or sunset" and showing what can be done with some side-lighting out in the open - not many "youtuber" pros are doing this from what I have seen so far - great to see.

    Great images Gary and great video. Not everyone can get up or out for sunrise and sunset, and I think that some of those photographers don't get out because they have had it drummed into their heads that you can only get good images at those times, are the images going to award winners maybe not but you never know, but not everyone is out there to win awards or competitions, I know I'm not I just like to get out and take images, if I get a really good one I'll get it printed and put on my wall, that's reward enough. Well you have just proved that you can get great images outside those sunrise and sunset times. Great work.👍👍👍

    Wow Gary... I have to agree with the many comments on this & you of coarse, just get out there, enjoy yourself, shoot the shots! Considering the harsh light you were dealing with, not half shabby! The 10 stopper & .9 grad on the sky made about the best you could could get or expect to get in either case. Showing the viewers the LCD display after the shot was taken, ( JPEG ) tells me the RAW in post will process out even nicer! Award winning, no, I agree, but worth taking the picture nevertheless...

    Cracking vlog as always and great images. I'm visiting the UK from Australia next year and the family are returning early so I can have a dedicated week for photography. I was thinking Skye but now I'm leaning towards the Lake District.

      Very kind of you to say Lee. I only started being active on my UA-cam channel 3 months ago. Before then I just uploaded slideshows and stuff through work. I didn't even tag my videos because YT wasn't something I was interested in at the time. My aim moving forward is very different. Being compared to Tom makes me feel very inspired so a MASSIVE THANKS to you :)

    There is a short section of the lake shut off from April, I think the lone tree is on that part of the shore. I was there last month, couldn't find it either lol.

      Jazztpt - lol maybe somebody will fill us in. I'm camping next time so I can shoot some star trails too. Plus there's a pub close by :)

      Gary Gough I was at Buttermere last month. The famous lone tree is at the northern end. It was fenced off (and no entry) from April to September as Sandpiper birds are nesting in the roots of the trees. I think that's every year too. Looked from the video you where on the eastern side of the lake. Buttermere is as classy place. Loads of compositions in every direction. Keep up the good work. 👍👍👍

    PS great advice re shooting at the time of day. People worrying about only shooting in the golden hours really limits their shooting

    • @GaryGough
      @GaryGough  7 років тому +1

      All to often the message photographers give off is Sunrise or Sunset and ignore the rest of the time in between. As we both know, it's not always feasible to shoot at those times either.

    Great vlog, Gary and as always, very inspiring, motivating with great shots, really beautiful. I watch your vlogs with great pleasure. I'd like to ask you a question. When you set up your shots, what do you focus on? Do you set the focus on infinity on landscapes and then switch off the lens stabilization and autofocus? Most importantly I'd like to know how and what do you focus on. Thank you.

    • @GaryGough
      @GaryGough  7 років тому

      D X - hi again, great comments, thank you. Re the focus... I always focus a third of the way into the image unless I have a strong subject in the foreground. I then turn my focus on the lens to manual so it doesn't move and I always turn my stabilisation off. I'll cover it a bit more in the next video. Hope that helps.

    Did you say you'll return in Winter for sunrise shots? Brrr. Liked your photography and narration. Without ND filters, just a polariser, could I take those shots, thinking of the two minute exposures?

    • @GaryGough
      @GaryGough  6 років тому +2

      Define winning Shot? Always a difficult one to answer really. There are so many factors at play as you know. Every shot you take that's better than your last one must be a winner! How's that for sitting on the fence? :)

      You should be an Olympian for that balance beam act!! :) Probably better to phrase it as one that you think is really special vs just meh.
