When you know someone has a wicked left hook and make your entire defense around preventing it from landing, it opens up opportunities for other shots to get through--straights, uppercuts, etc. And once you get hurt with those other shots and are forced to defend against them, then the other guy can look for that opportunity to land the left hook. Like even against Adesanya, Pereira didn't initially hurt him with a left hook, he got him with a right cross which then opened up Adesanya to the left hook once he was a bit compromised.
I feel like a good counter to alex for striking is not a good kickboxer but a boxer that can pressure and not get leg kicked. Or someone who knows how to mix it up

Besides the obvious point of him being a MASSIVE middleweight, he will resort to other tools (like body kicks and knees) to open up opportunities if he can't find them through his boxing. Of the opponents he's KO'd, the ones he didn't get with his hooks he got with his knees. I agree with your second choice though. That's probably why a guy like Whittaker has the best chance at beating him--you have to respect his striking but he has great wrestling.

He'd be too timid to strike with Pereira as well. Pereira could shut down Brunson's takedowns with a left uppercut, a lead flying knee, or stuffing the takedown & then clinch striking him. But Brunson is always dangerous. He has a good straight left, southpaw left hook, good takedowns, good top control, submissions & ground striking. If Brunson was to beat Pereira, I wouldn't be surprised but I still think that Pereira has better odds of winning against an aged Brunson Edit: I forgot to mention that if Pereira gets hurt, he will probably look for the clinch or move away, but he is aggressive and chances are he may look for an opportunity to counterpunch even when he's hurt.
