In my experience, BTACs are barely huntable these days. Either they go to the caterer who buys $50000 worth of booze a year from the store or into a raffle/lottery. They’re like animals in the zoo, technically they’re in your area but you can’t hunt them as they’re behind glass

Totally agree. Weller Special Reserve and regular Buffalo Trace are the only ones I've ever seen, even at an outrageous price. They just do not exist near me unless you know a store clerk.

@@CharleyCareyAgreed. I live and work in the D.C. area and outside of absolutely outrageously marked up liquor stores, the majority of bottles really go to lobbying firms and think-tanks. They move the inventory and have zero problem with a massive markup.

I just bought a 2023 bottle of Stagg Jr at a quickmart/gas station in Illinois for $179 in a small glass case with some other BTAC (Eagle Rare was $69). I know it's above MSRP but at Half secondary I grabbed it. It's odd where you may find BTAC products.

Holds a special place in my heart, first bourbon I ever tried. Still love it. And still find it for $35. In this market for a 10yr age statement. Yes please.

You're lucky. I get it from the distillery at MSRP (twice this year) and it is $45 plus I can only buy 1 bottle per person every 90 days. If you are getting it at $35 you should buy everything on the shelf. Just sayin'

I was able to snag an Eagle Rare 17 (19) this year, and I absolutely love it! I opened it as soon as I got it home because I love to taste my bourbons fresh upon opening, then try it again after it's had a chance to open up. First nosing and taste were incredibly bold, and I appreciated the higher proof, but the second tasting was incredible! It's like a dark honey, maple syrup, charred brown sugar that goes down smooth but with enough presence to let you know it's there. It's going to be hard to not run through this! Eagle Rare 17 was my very first BTAC bottle years ago (I took it to Vegas and drank it all over a five day period). I'm so glad I chose this as my bottle this year!

Been watching you guys for awhile. I appreciate your honest reviews. I'm aware you and other UA-camrs receive free bottles from distilleries for review.... And from my experience, just my opinion, you guys are among the few that will honestly give your opinion when receiving free juice, and that's very admirable. Thanks guys

The one comment about developing those store relationships - it really helps that you have a UA-cam channel. Its extremely competitive out there unless you spend literally thousands per week. Spending even more money just to get a shot at BTAC or Pappy? I'd be better off just paying secondary. Takes a miracle to even get Eagle Rare 10 at MSRP from a shop in my area - some even upcharge them if you win them in a raffle. Luckily, I prefer the Beam profile more than the Buffalo Trace profile for bourbon. I prefer high rye over wheated bourbons. Most of the Rye I enjoy come from smaller/craft distilleries (or sourced MGP). No one appreciates foreign whiskey in my area so I can find crazy allocated Japanese & Scotch for good prices. Ran across Hibiki 21 the other day for $550 (under MSRP) but didn't have the budget to buy it. Might still be sitting on shelf. Yamizaki 12 is always available for $120-160. Similarly, stuff like Octomore, Spring Bank, and Black Arts are just sitting on shelves. My point - this hobby isn't as bad if you aren't a Tater. Far less stressful.

I think you should revisit this in a couple months to see if it opens up. I have a couple bottles that were just ok on the first couple pours and after a few months they opened and are stellar. Nulu double toasted and calumet 16 for example.

Yes I like eagle rare but I’m not going to camp outside a store ever to get any bottles. I’m okay with what I can get every time I walk into a store and pay msrp. It’s ridiculous what some will do to get alcohol. And all of these distilleries are getting out of control with prices 10000 for a single bottle and WT putting out some bottles that are 350-450 it’s just crazy. It’s great that you got a bottle of this and I’m glad you like it but this isn’t something I’m even considering on getting.

Had a George T. Stagg for the first time on vacation in seattle a few weeks ago and was amazed, but it didn't hit that same mark for me the WLW did. Still, very very very good. So many other bottles were far better to me. Kinda like what Trenton is saying here. So I guess it's pretty batchy. But I tell you where I did like it, and that is as a mixer. It was great mixing it for cocktails. I used a lot of my bottle to spike egg nog and it was excellent.

It's a damn shame bourbon became so trendy over the last 10-12 years. I used to be able to buy any of the BTAC by the 3 bottle case each year from the local Specs here in Houston without any competition at $65/bottle. Scored multiple Stagg, WLW, and ER17 cases without fail year after year. Haven't been able to lay my hands on a single bottle for nearly five years now. We didn't know how good we had it.

The ER17 im definitely interested in. I use to love me some ER10 when i 1st started. Its definitely a great starter to introduce someone into the bourbon world. When i jumped head 1st into the bourbon drinking world. I was lured into it with ER10. & It was amazing & still isn't bad. Now that I've had some really excellent bourbons over the years. ER10 tends to sit untouched on the shelf anymore because others i have just simply crush it. It just doesn't do it for me anymore & im not out hunting for it all the time.

Eagle Rare is very good for the price... except that Liquor Store employees in Pennsylvania are NOT allowed to buy it ANY allocated bourbon until 2 days after it hits the stores. We see it roughly every 4 to 6 weeks and it lasts about an hour. So... we NEVER get to buy it anymore basically. Which in my opinion is an Insult to us store workers who enjoy good bourbon.

Handy is a wonderful rye but drinks like jet fuel. So hot. I personally didn’t observe wild differences between ER10 and ER17 so my expectations weren’t really met. Saz was a laggard, not in the same air as the other 4. I’d put Pappy below GTS, WLW and Handy. Call me crazy.

I kinda thought this was gonna flop a bit for you guys, not because it’s bad but because it lacks a lot of that “in your face punch” and shock of the higher proofed allocated juices BT releases which I think adds to the glamour of the acquisition of a rarity. Undoubtedly a lot of the love for btacs is simply because it’s a btac (same for me) and value is in the eye of the beholder. My bro inlaw loves eagle rare and while it’s a decent sipper it’s always been kindof a one noter that falls short and a bit flat for me. I brought him some Russell’s 10 to try over the holiday and side by side he preferred the Russell’s within about 30 seconds. That’s not to say Russell’s 10 is super special or that eagle rare is bad by any means, OR that btacs aren’t good, but people want what they can’t have and that scarcity adds a placebo effect. Having said that I would certainly buy an ER 17 if available whenever I saw it. I’m glad you guys finally got your hands on one, a confirmation for me as our palates align quite frequently.

I was so disappointed because I had been looking forward to it. I let it open up and tried a couple months later and it’s still the same. Ok on the front end but an end note and aftertaste of a sharpie marker and very bitter. I’m letting it sit a few more months to see if it will get better. I got ZERO of that cherry note.

It’s $29 at Walmart here in FL. They get it every few months. For that price it’s great. It’s essentially a single barrel so flavor does very. I wouldn’t pay $75... but I have spent $75 on bottles of other bourbon that turned out worse than good ER.

I would be curious about your feelings on which bottles become better once they have been opened for a while. I am a novice. I like Eagle Rare but I find if the bottle has been opened for 6 months with a quarter or more of the bottle removed it tastes much better, even to the point where I would call it different than a brand new bottle. Do they all get better? Do certain bourbons get better? What has been your experience?

    • @johng5710
      @johng5710 10 місяців тому

In general, once you get past the neck of the bottle and get a little air in it, the bourbon gets better. However, once the level of the bourbon gets low, too much air in the bottle can make it worse if the bottle sits like that for too long.
