Cycling across Canada (part 1/3) Quebec and Ontario

- Join me on my journey to discover north and south america by bike! Through these next couple of episodes I will be cycling across Canada starting from Mont-Tremblant, Québec and finishing in Tofino, British Columbia.

Hi Liam. This documentary was awesome. Thank you for sharing it with us. Very inspiring. This trip is on my bucket list for years. Hopefully my health will allow me to do it. I will be 53 next month.

I have been binging various cross Canada bike adventures and I am pretty inspired to do something.
I turn 60 in Jan 2022. So I am thing Calgary to Victoria might be a good first go.
I would love to do coast to coast, the hardest part is scheduling. I couldn't see it taking less than 3 months.
I would not want to speed through it, I want to stop and see the sights.
I have done Calgary to Alymer Ontario 3 times by motorcycle and have seen some wonderful views and slow rolling on a bicycle would be pretty cool. - Cheers
go for it! cycling across canada is an amazing experience! one thing that i do regret is not taking my time so definetly plan for your trip to last a bit longer just so you feel no preasure in rushing it:) and if you do coast to coast 3 months is a very good estimated time if not even 4 months if you are taking it a bit slower

Good luck on your trip! and I'm interested how crossing Manitoba will be, they have a manditory 14day isolation for people entering the province right now so I heard people in cars were having to drive straight through.
Thank you! When I passed through with my bike nobody asked me questions, although I didn't self isolate i made sure to have enough food to get through the province so i didn't need to be in contact with people there.

Nice video! I like the bike shorts cleaning tip :P. Which time of the year did you do this trip? Did you plan ahead of time where you will stop? Did you stealth camp most of the way? I am planing a 4 or 6 week trip around Southern Ontario for September to mid-October. My main concern is where to sleep each night. I have some touring experience but not much camping experience. I am worried that camping at parks will get expensive since most are about $40-50 a night.

Good going Liam, my girlfriend and I watched your videos with amusement and surprise and of course we think you are brilliant for not paying for camping and evading bears and inclement weather! We were planning a trip across Canada as well and wanted your advice on how you managed bathroom stops when there are no formal bathrooms?
My girlfriend also wanted to know where you found drinkable water. Did you have a water filter or did you boil water or did you manage to buy water or did you just drink water from anywhere?
Hi there Peter! Glad to hear you enjoyed my videos! I found that most of the provinces were pretty good for having rest areas with bathrooms, I would always try to set up camp close to one. When cycling through Ontario there were rest areas each 50km! There were of course times where there wasn't any rest areas or public bathroom and I had to resort to the nature but I mean hey it's part of the adventure right. I would carry around toilet paper at all time just incase.
@@cyclingwithliam1734 We think that you show an amazing amount of comfort sleeping wild without a tent. I have suggested trying this to my girlfriend but she is still not comfortable with the idea of any animal or some other human besides me touching her while she is asleep. I assume you have had a lot of experience camping up north with bears or other animals? Apropo bears I noted that you carried a medium size container on top of your front rack, was it for food? How many mechanical problems including flats did you have on your trip? Would you consider getting a more reliable bicycle or tires for your next trip?
@@peterfodor9789 I had a bear barrel on the top part of my rack, I had most of my food in there at all times.The only bike problems
I really had were getting flats, I got 7 in total and that was simply do to the fact that my tires were worn out so make sure your tire are in good condition or plan ahead to be able to change them during the trip.

Liam, how old were your tires when you started the trip? Or how many km did they have on it? 7 flats seems a lot.
Were the tires the original ones that came with the Trek 520?
Also, what model bear barrel and did you buy and from who?
This is sick, I live in Kirkland & pass by the spot at 2:17 where you ate at the bench, to go to work aha I just recognized the sign. Where did you end up staying the night before & do you have a route of your ride?
No way that's sick! The night before I spent the night under a bridge near Rouyn Noranda airport. I don't have a route but I would say that 95% of the time i biked on the trans canadian. I biked on the 117 in Quebec, the 11 and then the 17 In Ontario, In manitoba i biked on the 1 and the grabbed the 16 west t'ill I got to Jasper then I took the 93 highway to Lake louise and from there I just followed the 1 to Tofino!

Good morning! Cycling the rockies had to be the most beautiful and interesting part of my trip. I biked from Jasper to Lake Louise and from Lake Louise to Golden and it was absolutely breath taking!!
Right now I'm doing 130ish km a day, which more than when i started my trip. I will be getting to my finale destination soon so usually i would grad a flight to Yukon however because I'm a quebec citizen i would have to do two weeks self isolation and would need proof of an address in order to do so. From Vancouver O have decided to fly back home and rest for a bit while I wait to enter the Yukon!
What tent did you use? And did it fit in your panniers, or did you have to put it on top?
Nemo hornet 2 person tent, and yes it fit in one of my back paniers in diagonal. It's pretty small when its packed up!
I intend to do the same but I keep thinking about what if I pitch my tent and I am faced with coyotes during the night. How do you tackle such inhibitions?
The coyotes you shouldn't worry about its the bears to be scared of bears haha. In the end you realize that it is rare that an animal wants to approach a human, usually they try and avoid you. Most of the time i was so tired from biking all day that i would fall a sleep to fast to even worry about animals
Did you use a GPS and/or make a Google map of your Route?
I'm collecting these trips to help refine the proposed Bike Across Canada Route Network.
I used google maps however i am having trouble sharing it with people, i pretty much just stayed on the trans canadian the whole way except highway 93 in alberta wich was an amazing detour
what was your ride through Northern Ontario like ?
Curious what you estimate your packed bike weighed?? I soooo want to do a ride as I mention in my other comment. Gears in my brain turning,. I want ot take the winter to plan some of the logistics. Any comment appreciated. - Cheers

How long did it take to go through Ontario??
A good two to three weeks, Ontario was the longest part
Do you carry an extra bicycle chain with you?
nope but i do carry an extra piece de join two parts of the chain together if my chain happens to break

@@cyclingwithliam1734 Riding across Canada would be boring for me cause you can cycle for Hours without seeing a new town. In England you could be seeing a new town every 90 minutes. Population is much more dense.
Nice video! But why do you bother to ride that narrow shoulder on roads where there is so little traffic? If we as cyclists keep on doing that, we never gain the motorists respect for being a legitimate participant of traffic. Trust your ears (you can pretty much hear if a car makes room for you or not or install a rear view mirror. You will notice that even in North America well over 95% of the cars will go to the left enough when passing you. I am telling you this from personal experience. Keep on riding!
