Rick - I recently purchased a Air Venturi, Sam Yang, .50 caliber Wing Shot shotgun, and would like to comment on the gun, and your review.Your review is fine as far as it goes, but you really should take it to the next level, as there is at least as much more to discuss as your have already covered.Air Venturi promotes this gun to shoot shot shells, and slug/ball ammunition. You covered the shot portion, but not the slug/ball type usage. As you know, from our past dealings, I am from New York State. For many years, we have hunted deer using smoothbore shotguns in certain areas where environmental concerns dictate limited range for hunting purposes. Under 100 yards, our smoothbore shotguns are quite effective for this purpose. For longer distances, they are not.Since slug/ball ammunition can readily be loaded into the Wing Shot, and it is promoted by Air Venturi to do so, it is very feasible that owners of this weapon will get around to shooting slug/ball ammunition in it, if only to satisfy their curiosity as to how accurate such usage might be? Therein lies the rub.The Wing Shot comes with a removable choke on the threaded muzzle of the barrel. From PyramidAir's posted specifications, that choke necks down the barrel from .494 diameter to .486 diameter ID - a full .008 in dimension which is completely unacceptible for slug/ball usage. .001 would be acceptible, and .002 or more is questionable in a normal rifled barrel situation. In firearms, such a fast choke would be suggested as something not promoted as safe or suggested with use of slugs. In an air gun, I think that shooting slugs with this choke attached, would be even more of an issue! It is simply too much choke for slugs or ball. In order to safely discharge air propelled slugs or ball ammunition through the Wing Shot, the choke should be removed so that the slug or ball is not forced through the neck of any sized choke, and is allowed to pass unhindered through the cylinder bore. Unfortunately. Air Venturi hasn't provided an additional muzzle cap that could take the place of the choke which when removed, exposes the externally threaded end of the muzzle, which if left unprotected, could be damaged during slug/ball usage. Yes, slug/ball ammunition can be fired through the choke, but for how long, or with what possible negative results, before the choke is damaged, or the real possibility that a slug/ball, shot at low power, at the end of a string, might be stuck in the choke, inviting disaster with the next shot attempt? I have already contacted Air Venturi and discussed this with them. From our conversation, they had not considered this issue at all when they were designing the gun. They sent me a protective end cap from a .50 cal. Sam Yang Dragon Claw, which is similarly threaded, but does not completely screw on and does not thus protect the complete muzzle of the gun. It is obvious that this is a serious issue that must not be ignored. This gun should NOT be fired through the choke with anything except shot rounds! The choke should be removed prior to shooting any slug or ball! Air Venturi should cease selling this gun until it is properly promoted and a proper fitting protective end cap is provided to the buyer (and retroactively to those who have already made their purchase), for times that the choke is removed for slug/ball usage!
I'm just looking at this gun as a first step, a real first step, at something that could be a precursor to something better down the road. I'm not a hunter but I do have a little fun with clays. I'm nowhere near as good as I think you'd need to be with something like this. I don't see myself buying this gun but it's nice to see a manufacturer making the effort and bringing another aspect of air gunning into the realm of reality.
I would also like to see this tested against a .410 on pattern boards up to 50 yards, comparing pattern size and density. In some of IL public hunting areas, only shotguns can be used. This would be a good option if it is effective. Also, is it a smooth bore? If it is, an aftermarket Improved cylinder choke may be in order. And finally, will air venturi sell the cool little plastic cups so shooters can "handload", or will we be trapped to Air Venturi ammo pricing? And how does a box of Air Venturi ammo compare to a box of off the shelf shotgun shells?
Quite the airgun, Rick. My only real concern about it would be the limited number of shots. It seems to me that it would limit any real tramping in the woods. Who would want to carry an air tank around with them? For hunting in a blind I can see where this would not be much of a problem. Now, if they can extend the shot count to 15 or so rounds that would make it much more versatile IMHO. Thanks for another great video. Take care. Karl
I have the 50 cal I use 495 round ball and it work just fine. I also use slug but round ball is great out to 30 to 40yds. I can pick up round ball 100 count for about $20 or use my reload round ball 495 mold.
I Would like to see you do some bird and other small game hunting with this gun I think it will be interesting to see how the gun preforms in the field.
I have been looking in to getting a new airgun but am stuck between getting pcp or spring so far i have looked at the mrod, discovery, armada, condor, talon ss, hatsan at44 Qe series, R9, Hw97, whisper fusion Pro and maxima, bone collector bullwhisper , amongst many otgers amy sugestions or prefrances of yours would be helpful. (Mainly for hunting small game)
+Jon bei - if you can go PCP right off the bat.. go that way. Good starter PCPs are the Hatsan AT line, Gamo Coyote, and the Marauder / Armada. Cheers AGW
Airgun Experts - AirgunWeb / AirgunWebTV Ok thanks for the info i found the mrod for $605.60 from crossman with everything needed thats probubley what i will get. How many shots does the mrod .22 give versus the .25? Also is the armada diffrent from the mrod besides its design?
Hey Rick, i was wondering what your opinion is on what would be the best hunting break barrel airgun to buy. I prefer wooden stocks over synthetic ones. I have saved up the money to buy a pcp airgun but i'm not sure if i want to invest that much money in the sport as i am new to it. I'm thinking a break barrel is the way to go because they are more affordable and less of a hassle. Preferably id like to hunt small to medium sized game similar to what i can do with my Ruger 10/22. Could you give me your opinion on break barrels and pcps. Id also like to know what the best calibers are for hunting plus and can break barrels accurately shoot at a 50 yard range. If so what are the best models for that. Thanks!
+gavin dixon - There are many good options on the market for 30 to 40 yard small game power and accuracy. I would first look at .22 and higher for caliber. The RWS 350 .22 is pricy, but has the range and power to get it done. The RWS 460 is even better, and more money, but it's a 50 yard gun with 1" accuracy. It's my favorite springer for hunting at range. The RWS 34 is always a great option for 25 to 35 yards. If you want to stray just a little from wood stocks, then consider the new Hatsan Mod 125 Sniper QE that's coming out soon, in .25 caliber. Cheers AGW
Hi Rick, +Airgun Experts - AirgunWeb / AirgunWebTV, first of all, very good video review of the wing shot, but what I'm very curious about is the NEW HATSAN GLADIUS that's on the back!!!!!, When is that bullpup review coming ??, can you tell a little before is up ?. Thanks
How does it perform with slugs? My pyramid cat states 1130fps, what is the wt of the shot charge? How about .410 or 28 ga (.55 cal) with reloadable cases and the ability to use otc wads. I would prefer removable choke tubes over the polychoke. In 28 ga with 3/4 oz (+- 375 grains) of #8's at 1100 fps it would be a dandy quail gun. You could also sell aftermarket reloaders. Thx for the review ps was the receiver tapped for mounts?
Not sure how it does with slugs or anything other than the factory shot ammo. They do have a mount that will give you an 11mm rail for the top of the receiver. Cheers AGW
i know i keep on coming here and bothering you but what would be the best pellet for the ruger air magnum? i know it has to be heavy and it is in the .177 (i should have gotten the .22).
+brandon wilkes (frazdoesmc) - I'm not sure on lowest temps.. I've been out hunting at 21 degrees with a spring powered Gamo G2 Whisper and it did just fine. That's the extent of my experience on that one. cheers AGW
I noticed the Dragon's Claw .50 cal has 600+ fps and the Venturi Air Shotgun is used with buckshot, it is also .50 cal, but it's quoted at 1130 fps. There's no way it can be that far in difference? The Venturi can shoot "slugs" as well as buckshot, so if the Dragon's Claw .50 shoots at 600+ with "slugs", would the Venturi shoot around the same if it's not buckshot? I've noticed .45 and .357 rifles shoot at about 1200fps and in my opinion, you compromise slight bullet size for a lot more speed and penetration. For hunting deer and larger animals, wouldn't we want a .357 that shoots at about 1200fps compared to a .50 that puts out 600+ fps?
Not sure about the issues you are reporting. I did not chrony the gun as I don't see the value of doing so with shot in a product like this. There's a big difference between shot in a husk leaving the bore and a large solid block of lead dragging down the bore. Those are two important things to consider. As for the power on target and the difference between calibers.. It all depends on energy.. not FPS. a bowling ball moving at 75 MPH will do a lot more damage than a tennis ball at 75 MPH. The .50 at 600 fps pushing a 350 grain slug is pretty devastating. That said, the .35 and .45 are vary good calibers as well. Look at energy not FPS. Cheers AGW
Luke. It took a lot of practice. I'm not a shotgunner by any stretch. I have hunted dove which is I guess what you would mostly use this for. The biggest issue I ran into personally was getting the elevation right. Do a lot of practice on paper at 15 to 20 yards and get really good hitting center of the target. From there you'll probably have a lot more success. Cheers AGW
+foolongtea fps are not so important it's the grouping of the pattern and I see is rather bad, wide spread. With a well aimed pellet at 600 or even 500 fps you can hunt any small (sparrow) or medium bird (crow, pigeon).
+brandon wilkes (frazdoesmc) - Yeah.. I'm behind on comments right now.. maybe 200 or so I need to get back to. All this keeps me pretty busy. Happy New Year. cheers! AGW
+Airgun Experts - AirgunWeb / AirgunWebTV its good that you have to keep busy. i will look out for the review. i don't really expect much from the gun though but it is supposed to be a precision shooter air gun coming from a great company. i have read and there are some inconsistencies with it. could you tell me when you find out about it?
Not everyone has the freedom to buy such a thing. If money is no object, but laws restrict your options, this might be a very viable alternative to the 'blast everything in sight' gun.
I'm not aware of any mainstream air shotguns right now. There's a lot of big bore guns that could potentially be decent at the role. We'll have to see how things go in 2017. Cheers AGW

They should make shotshells with 7.5 shot. That would be the ideal load for this.

cant wait
Do you know of any similar air shotgun, but with quick reload magazine?
Chris Klest don’t ask questions he/they never answer
The barrel needs some choke for a tighter group.
It has one
how far are you leading the clays? I had a tough time at the range with it

I really don't see myself trusting this to take down any birds. What's the fps of the shot coming out at?
+foolongtea 1200fps with a half ounce load
joe nardo Really? I didn't expect it to be that high at all.
+foolongtea fps are not so important it's the grouping of the pattern and I see is rather bad, wide spread. With a well aimed pellet at 600 or even 500 fps you can hunt any small (sparrow) or medium bird (crow, pigeon).
Perico De Lospalotes FPS is important as that translates into FPE. I'm sure they'll have a choke system that will tighten the grouping.
He is using the only choke the gun comes with, there is not even another one protecting the threads when using a slug. Read the comments.
is the barrel removable i want to get a rifled one
Seneca dragon claw is 50 cal rifle version of this gun shoots slugs
could you do a review on the swiss arms tg1 i haven't heard a lot about it but it looks neat!

It's an odd one for sure. They should have used a AirForce Condor as the base though. Additionally I would never consider waterfowl hunting with this.
