  • Host William Shatner and musician/real-life TV star Gene Simmons sit down for a one-on-one conversation. Shatner talks to Simmons about being born in Israel, moving to America and his father leaving at an early age. Simmons tells Shatner about his musical influences, the origins of KISS, and being happily "un-married".

I always felt that this show never got the recognition that it deserved. Say what you will about Shatner and his eccentricities, but I think he's an excellent interviewer for this reason - he's genuinely interested in the person he's talking to. When people feel that you actually care about *them*, they will open up to you in ways that they never would otherwise.
This particular interview with Gene Simmons always stood out to me as one of his best ones. Simmons has the reputation that he has, but I think Shatner did a very good job of digging deep enough to give you a sense of WHY Simmons is the way he is. There's a certain aspect of him that makes you think, "If I had grown up the way he did, I'd probably act the same way as well."

Look for an interview he did with Tyson. It wasn't part of this show (i'm thinling it was called the hot box interview), but it leaves you with even more respect for both. He is a master interviewer.

My mother who is Thai says the people who live here for many generations do not see the opportunity that America has. Many times, it's the people from outside who see the gold here.

Mr. Simmon's Socks. They could be interviewed 'solely' on their own merits. To provide you with some backstory, my dad, his siblings, and his parents were on Hitler's Death List, for smuggling Jews out of Germany, and later, out of Austria. They were leading members of the underground White Rose Society. Therefore, I'm not denigrating his experience at all. By no means. It just looks like his socks might have a tale to tell as well. 😉

I’ve read a number of memoirs of emigres to the U.S. Some were refugees, some emigres, others seeking special political asylum. Out of all the wonderful things they saw, they ALL comment on how a Supermarket blew their minds. Many were skeptical of what they were shown as being ‘show pieces’ or ‘propaganda props’, but the grocery store had to be real. One Soviet Fighter pilot who defected in the 1970’s exclaimed ‘Do you know that in 30 minutes, a woman could buy enough in this store to feed a Russian family for 2 weeks!’. His U.S. intelligence handler just nodded.

Right. We who are born here, can take that for granted if we don't know any better. Sometimes you have to step outside, to be able to see, compare and contrast between the two different worlds.

Gene, it's not different between men and women. I failed my children, because I left them for a crucial 11 years, in their teen years. I loved them. I kissed them, I held them. I divorced their abusive father. I tried to take them with me, but he had the money and therefore the good attorney. I have lost the relationship between my 40 year old son and myself, because I failed him when he needed me. My 35 year old daughter has forgiven me. She and I have been together again since she was 19. I don't know what to do about my failure with my son. God forgive me for my sins.
