From my limited knowledge "roadies" isn't short for anything in general it refers to the team of Technicians and Helpers that make sure the instruments are tuned and in place for the band ... you could probably even include the Stage Hands as part of that Roadie Crew too ... if I'm way off point I'm sure someone will correct me - but that's the way I've come to understand it from a few years of being around the crew
