Glad I found this video. I just bought my first M43 camera, a GX9, as a more travel-friendly substitute for my bigger and heavier Canon 7D and 6D Mark II. And the upcoming trip is to...Rome.
The GX9 is actually the successor of the GX80/85, which in turn was the successor of the GX7. In Japan they are named GX7 - GX7 mkII - GX7 mkIII. This should explain a lot.
Have loved my GX7, and this really looks like a very logical upgrade. Hope the tilting EVF is lockable though. I hate the way the GX7 viewfinder is able to shift freely, which makes it catch easily on clothing etc.
I like that it has tilting but not fully articulating screen. There are already several micro four thirds cameras with fully articulating. We didn't need another. For street shooting I much prefer quick up and down tilting. Looks like an excellent camera!
This camera came out 3 years ago and now I've seen it as low as 600 new. Currently I shoot with the GX85 and I'm barely learning how the modes work lol. I was full Nikon and the Lumix was collecting dust. I'm now full mirrorless as I sold my last Nikon DSLR body.
As a videographer this camera seems pretty great to me. I'm looking for a street photography camera that can also be my B-cam to go with my GH4 and this has very similar specs. No it doesn't have audio connections but I wouldn't ever try connecting anything to this anyway, just use an external recorder or record on GH4.
Thanks for the review and showing how it performs as a photo camera. I have a G7 which I use for photos only and was put off by the GX8 due to its size. I have been wanting internal stabilization for a while now to use with older lenses and my 25mm 1.7 and a smaller camera than a GX8 and this camera ticks all the boxes for me. I can see how those who do video are not too impressed but for me it looks great for what I want it for ....
if you view this as the upgrade to the gx8 you'll probably be disappointed with the missing features. but if you more rightly consider this as an upgrade to the gx85 - you'll be stoked by the improved finder, controls, & sensor. the gx9 is much closer to the gx85 is size & weight and bundled with the 12-60 f5.6 lens costs the same as the gx8 (body only).
spamboli I completely agree. Most of the physical features seem to be inherited from the GX80/85, with just the 20mp sensor and tilting feature of EVF coming from the G8. Since I am a huge GX80/85 fan, this comes as a fantastic upgrade and as you point out at a price so similar to what the GX80/85 was at offering.
Love the shots Matt. I think I will end up buying the GX9 this year. It will be a great backup to my Em1II and G9. Most attractive, however, is the GX9's street design. I have really been waiting for a camera like this. In fact. I almost got a GX8 before the G9 was announced, but the G9's specs were too good for to pass it up.
Thanks, agree with most points you made. Still, hate the fact that it is not weather sealed and there's no mic input. That is going to be a deal breaker for many buyers. We used the camera for some 1000 images so far and it has been great for most of the time. I wonder how it will do for a vlogging camera.
Thank you for your breif but well done review. I really am enjoying shooting with my fairly new GX9 and the Lumix Leica 15mm (30mm equivalent) lens. It is great and really perfect for "street photography". If you want a small, compact, light and versitle camera this GX9 is terrific.
Great review, Matt has a wonderful delivery. And regarding the camera thank goodness Panasonic introduced the tilt screen as opposed to the flip out screen in the GX8...it is far quicker to use and far less obtrusive, well done Panasonic, this is a brilliant specialised street and documentary camera.
Having the Gx7 and while I love it, I'm starting to think on upgrading, and this doesn't seems to be that much interesting... I rather buy the GX8 (that has mic input and HDMI clean output) now that it will be a lot more cheaper moving forward
Good video. As you say, this is the true successor to the GX7 in spec, which means that oddly, its a downgrade from the GX8 spec (weatherproofed, mic input...). This is really the GX80 replacement. The pro' spec' GX has gone, for now...
Although this is OBVIOUSLY a downgrade it doesn't matter, G85 users can upgrade to this, GX8 users can keep a great camera or upgrade to the G9. I must say, the images on DPReview of this camera look absolutely wonderful. The correct lineage of Lumix Cameras is: (GX series) GX1, G85, GX9 (Gseries) GX8, G9 - whats in a name afterwards? I will be keeping my GX8 which I absolutely love until they make a G9 in size closer to the GX8
Brian Cullen hi, why would any g85 user want to upgrade to this? I’m in for a new camera and deciding between g85 and gx9, do you think gx9 has better image quality and video autofocus? Thank you
What a downgrade, the gx8 has weather sealing, mic imput, vlog style flip touch screen, very similar sensor...um..this is garbage. ...i think they did this so that ppl who were in the gx line would move to the g9.
maybe compared to the GX8, but it's sized and priced closer to the GX85 and weigh's less. this seems more like a gx85 mated with the sensor & controls from the gx8.
I love GX8 at tilting electronic viewfinde in G9 at no tilting electronic viewfinde i do not like if g9 has tilting electronic viewfinde i might change
Nice video review. The GX9 looks to be a slight downgrade from the GX8 when it comes to video. I mean no headphone jack and flip out LCD screen kind of hurts it as a proper video camera. I am guessing Panasonic wants those interested in video to go to the GH5 or G85 route now. This GX9 camera seems more like a GX85 than a GX8 upgrade, so for now will be holding onto my more capable GX8. Peace!
i must agrea,i shoot my gx8 in dusty and wet weather as i live in the tropics,i like to shoot video with my shotgun mic on top, this is indeed a few steps back, fully articulated touchscreen is also much better on the gx8,AA filter missing is the only pluspoint i can see.i will pass this one, think i am going for a G80 as a second body
No weather sealing. Its only really got 20mp advantage over gx85 everything else is inferior. Wished for a true gx8 replacement and its a bit of a letdown
Ah come on. Just about every "prosumer" digital camera now is outstanding. In the meantime most of us are really bad photographers. It hasn't been about the equipment since about 1930...
At first I thought the move to tilting instead of articulating screen is to not get in the way of the mic input, but then you say it doesn't even have one - a deal breaker to me then :-(
You're looking for a better choice than the GX9, very less expensive, much better equipped ? Try the GX8... And with the money you save, buy a good lens : 25 f:1,4 Panasonic or 12-40 Olympus. And look at the 75 F/1.8 for portraits...
The EVF on this camera is disappointing and awful compared to the GX8. Definitely try before you buy. I got one and sold it a month later....I'll stick with my GX8 with mic input, weather sealing and a much better EVF. Surprised they didn't mention this on the review..I guess these reviews are just to sell cameras.
What a dissapointment. I was waiting for the GX9 to be more like an upgraded gx8 with usb charging and better low light performance. This just seems like what I would expect a GX90 to be. G9 all the way if I could afford it.
This is not a the successor to the GX8. This is a GX90! You f.. ed it up Panasonic. GIVE US WHAT WE WANT A PANASONIC GX9! No stupid joke of a flash, more dials, weathersealing and fully articulated screen.
Good review but I wish you would black or white out the side borders of the example still images instead of filling the side borders with blurred out portions of the still image.
You are absolutely right. Of late, there are just too many prople complaining about this kind of csmeras not having the right features for video. Well, this camera is just not design for serious videograhers. It is designed for still photgraphers especially street and travel photogrsphers. For videogrsphers, they can always choose the other models like the G85 or the GH5 or GH5s.
This camera is more Panasonic GX7 Mark III ,but no way GX9 - this is garbage, shame on you Panasonic . I have a GX8 and i waiting for GX9 to upgrade, but now , or Panasonic G9 becose i have some panasonic lenses ,or waiting for Sony A6700..
Total failure to improve on GX8 (actually a downgrade as far as I am concerned). I will skip this one and may look to another brand for my travel cam needs.
Good review! But a downgrade from the GX8. The GX8 is a perfect allrounder, this is not, Gx8 has a 2.5mm imput for external audio, not a 3.5 but it can be fixed with an adapter. The gx9 has NONE. Like how is that an improvement? Weres the flip out screen? Why a tilt screen? The screen of the gx8 could be tilted in a way that you dont see it, so it keeps the screen protected from dust or scratchy surfaces. I can keep on going but I have made my point clear that I am dissapointed because the GX8 is such a great camera, it deserves a proper following up model
Glad I found this video. I just bought my first M43 camera, a GX9, as a more travel-friendly substitute for my bigger and heavier Canon 7D and 6D Mark II. And the upcoming trip is to...Rome.
Have fun!
Honestly I'm really enjoying the professionalism of this channel. Keep it up.

Yup this helps
Have loved my GX7, and this really looks like a very logical upgrade. Hope the tilting EVF is lockable though. I hate the way the GX7 viewfinder is able to shift freely, which makes it catch easily on clothing etc.
Enjoy your street photos. A lot of life and wit.
I like that it has tilting but not fully articulating screen. There are already several micro four thirds cameras with fully articulating. We didn't need another. For street shooting I much prefer quick up and down tilting. Looks like an excellent camera!
Gx9 can be used for professional use as well as G9 depending on your needs.
Looks good. Ashame for the lack of mic jack
The EVF has 2.7million dots. Is it the same one used in GX85, GX7? Also does it have 30min limit for video?
This camera came out 3 years ago and now I've seen it as low as 600 new. Currently I shoot with the GX85 and I'm barely learning how the modes work lol. I was full Nikon and the Lumix was collecting dust. I'm now full mirrorless as I sold my last Nikon DSLR body.
I just bought the GX9 and also learning the different modes :). Good luck!
Very good street pics.
wtf is going on in the family selfie pic at 3:56 lolllll
lol)

Great video with superb shots and succinct info.

It is a GX 85.5
true that :D
Or GX7 MK3
Like the shots. Are these SOOC?

Thank you for your very detailed and short review. You did a great report.
Great review, Matt has a wonderful delivery. 5 axis important for camera nowadays dude, excelent choice 👍
thanks for the review -- was the video footage also shot with a 2nd GX9?
Having the Gx7 and while I love it, I'm starting to think on upgrading, and this doesn't seems to be that much interesting... I rather buy the GX8 (that has mic input and HDMI clean output) now that it will be a lot more cheaper moving forward
Finding a good GX8 at a sensible price is not that easy (I have been trying!)
Is it G9 sensor or GX8 sensor without LP filter? No weather seal?
Amazing captures! Subbing because of 3:56!
I currently have the GX85 as a backup to my Nikon D750. How does the GX9 compare to the GX85 in image quality? I shoot mostly stills.
Can someone tell me the name of the artist/band and the song at 0:36 please?
What is the lens you were using during this video?
Hi Matt, I like your reviews, keep them up. Shame that there is no tilting screen. I may still consider however, with that free 25/1.7 lens
Good video. As you say, this is the true successor to the GX7 in spec, which means that oddly, its a downgrade from the GX8 spec (weatherproofed, mic input...). This is really the GX80 replacement. The pro' spec' GX has gone, for now...
Is there a decent 35mm equivalent lens for this camera for street shooting?
What lense did you use to shoot?
What lens are you using in this video?
Although this is OBVIOUSLY a downgrade it doesn't matter, G85 users can upgrade to this, GX8 users can keep a great camera or upgrade to the G9.
I must say, the images on DPReview of this camera look absolutely wonderful.

Hello, the video Button on my Gx9 has no pressure Point, is this normal?
Thank you, greetings from Germany ☺️
I’ll wait for the GX10, the updated GX8.
Ian Frazer dont say that maybe they will go back to 1080p 30fps after the GX9 😂😂😂
The real question is which camera was used to make this video?? such a superb nd crisp vid
What about portrait shooting? Any good
Still love my GX7 with a 12-35mm on.
They should have paired this camera with the 20mm instead of that zoom.
im saving for this already
What is your bag mate?
Lindas fotografias!!!
No weather sealing, tilting screen, mic input. What a let down.... going to stick with my GX8 for a while until the get their ducks in a row again.
Mark Seath yes gx8 has articulated screen, but the video sucks, shaky. Gx9 much much better video maybe like gh5.
What a downgrade, the gx8 has weather sealing, mic imput, vlog style flip touch screen, very similar sensor...um..this is garbage. ...i think they did this so that ppl who were in the gx line would move to the g9.

GX8 GX9 Yes tilting electronic viewfinder *** G9 No tilting electronic viewfinder
I love GX8 at tilting electronic viewfinde in G9 at no tilting electronic viewfinde i do not like if g9 has tilting electronic viewfinde i might change
Happy to own a gx8
Mundo Despierto this camera is more for photographers .

Still waiting? 😁
Thank you for the video.
For me its more a gx80 remplacement than gx8.
Ju VPower ABSOLUTELY 100%
In Japan this is the GX7 Mk3 and the GX80 is the GX7 Mk2.
Actually you were in Vatican in the start of the video ;) Whats the estimated price for this beauty?
fuji xe3 or GX9 ?
REALLY UNHAPPY no audio in/out. thumbs up for the vid. thumbs down Panasonic ;-(
You think they would have learned when everybody complained that the GX85 didn't have a mic jack...
smalltalk.productions I don’t care about mic in body. I can do anything with mic external.
Perfect for make photo...
The only downfall off this camera is that the flip out screen is gone. But otherwise it is a worthy upgrade. I shall proberly buy both the GX8 and GX9
I don't see an external shutter trigger socket
Gerald McGivern good point! Please tell me that's not missing too!!
wifi app
i must agrea,i shoot my gx8 in dusty and wet weather as i live in the tropics,i like to shoot video with my shotgun mic on top, this is indeed a few steps back, fully articulated touchscreen is also much better on the gx8,AA filter missing is the only pluspoint i can see.i will pass this one, think i am going for a G80 as a second body

Yes
Wow you hit all the Highlights in Rome in short order.
No weather sealing. Its only really got 20mp advantage over gx85 everything else is inferior. Wished for a true gx8 replacement and its a bit of a letdown

Does this camera have intelligent auto?
Ooooo this looks fantastic. I love my Gh5 but I have missed something a bit smaller recently!
1:03 That guy wants one :-)
This feels like an updated GX7

And look at the 75 F/1.8 for portraits...
If EVF is the same unit that is used in GX85 then it's a real fail and no buy for many customers !
why a real fail? what’s wrong with that?
They did everything right with this camera but no headphone jack? If Sony can fit one in the RX1rii I'm sure Pana could put it in. I say get the GX8
Panasonic GX9 or Olympus OMD 10 mk iii
I still feel like the A6500 is a better buy than this :/
Rich W. It does have a headphone jack, bigger sensor, af is a lot better, and slog 3
Desolo Zantas Exactly and the price is very slightly different. The only reason why someone would get this is they already have a range of mft lenses.
G10Col and that's the reason for this, quality for a budget but there is a compromise. You pay for what you get.
Point5 Group lol maybe he was thinking of a Sony a7rii, a6500 is only like $1200 - $1500 as GX9 is $1000
G10Col Ah interesting never knew that
What a dissapointment. I was waiting for the GX9 to be more like an upgraded gx8 with usb charging and better low light performance. This just seems like what I would expect a GX90 to be. G9 all the way if I could afford it.

Almost.... just needs 1080 at 120fps and it would be the best.
Anyone shooting street photography doesn't give a shit about the headphone/mic input.

Slow down Panasonic, slow down.
Total failure to improve on GX8 (actually a downgrade as far as I am concerned). I will skip this one and may look to another brand for my travel cam needs.
Can you hear the people Panasonic, we don't want it, YOU DONT LISTEN! Give us what we want!

Не камера, а убожество. Как я ждал LX200, а получил GX9...разочарован
