- I am not sure why people today, probably more than ever, need a 'minimalist' appearance to their yards and homes to feel calm. Someone should look into this. Either way, this minimalist pursuit is killing the pollinators, butterflies, and native North American bees, and it needs to STOP!
If you must have some of your yard cleared, that's ok - but please leave a portion of it wild, covered in leaves, with dead stalks for critters to burrow in.
I believe people want to help the environment - they just aren't aware their common practices are hurting it.
#Leavetheleaves this fall!! I am. And I don't care who thinks it looks 'disheveled.' Art is messy, creativity is messy, invention is messy... let's bring a little mess back to our very predictable lives!

The idea of living in the country in a yard that I can just "let go" sounds like a dream. Living in suburbia and dealing with HOA's has drained my soul dry.
I read a few books this winter about how everyone needs to start going to the HOA meetings with presentations to show them WHY plant diversity / some wild land is needed in the development !
The hoa can't stop you from installing a 200 foot radio tower or bat boxes.

No truer words have been said that spoke to my heart! I moved to the suburbs from Chicago in 2020. I was in a condo and wanted the freedom of being in a home with dogs and a backyard. Now I feel like I’m in a bubble where everybody has something to say about the status of my native garden vs grass. It’s gross 😂 I’m definitely looking for a more rural private existence next.

well said and I have been talking about and doing this for a very long time now. I hope this gets spread far and wide. There are so many little things we can do every day that help the little things that help our world turn round so-to-speak. Thank you.
The one rule in my garden is if it's got a flower, leave it . Simple. Weeds, trees, flower beds, whatever. Once the flowers go, it's into the compost bins. One of my coolest gardening moments was watching tiny native bees working on some kale plants that I had left to go to seed. It bought a little tear to my eye. Mother Nature is awesome.
Yes she is, and nature needs us to direct - not control - it. Ask any indigenous peoples. Oak savannahs, the Amazon forest etc are a product of our GARDENING... but all the big city activists, who never put their hands in the soil, are way too convinced in humanity being evil to grasp the idea that symbiosis with nature is possible. It's possible and it's AMAZING
We have a small yard in the outer edges of the city and we have stopped raking leaves or doing any yard cleanup other than large limbs in the fall. It saves me a lot of work and it helps provide a bit of insulation for the plants over the winter so they don't freeze to death. I watch the local neighborhood social Media group and look around me and see how much time and money people spend trying to keep their yards looking unnaturally immaculate. It is so much easier and cheaper to let nature take its course. And it is so much better for nature.

My idea for all the leaves in the fall. Put them all around a large evergreen tree or a row of evergreens. Use a 2-3 foot wire fence held in place with rebar to contain them. In the spring, after the leaves have compressed and begun to decompose cover them with wood chips and remove fence. You can add lime to speed up process. Bye bye leaves, hello simple composting system. I've been doing this for years.

As long as I am not causing anything to get into and block my drains, I tend to leave the leaves to do their thing. Also most of my neighbours pay to have a special garden waste bin emptied each month. I do not do this, I make piles of garden waste and allow it to compost. This is good for the garden and the bees it seems, as they often make a home at the foot of a pile in my garden.

In 2011 I told my friend that the Earth is good at taking care of itself. It doesn’t need humans to take care of it so when you see leaves falling from trees in the fall, it probably means you should leave it alone and there’s something beneficial for the soil and the grass underneath.

Totally agree with the sentiment, but I think this is location specific.
In the upper midwest we clear in the fall because it gets dry and there's a fire risk of having too much dead material on our land.
That could be true, but I bet there are still ways everyone can leave certain setups outside that help your pollinators

Here's the thing. Yes, you don't need to be obsessing over brush hogging and whatever to neaten up. BUT, you live in a place that was forest. It will reforest itself. TO keep land clear for agriculture....you need to mow eventually. Brush and trees are tenacious and a pain to remove. If someone wants to keep bees on your property, you should consider it or solicit it.
We used to compost and then dig in the compost. We have learned that the best thing we can do is use organic material to mulch all our plants. What God designed works best…there is actually value in the decomposition process. We also let all the sunflowers grow in our yard that the birds have spread. They shade our garden and they provide great food for the small birds. I have learned so much from two books: “Teaming with microbes” and “Teaming with nutrients”, both by Jeff Lowenfels. Have a great weekend. Awesome woman that more women should be like.

Granted I grew up in farm country, but I don't recall ever seeing anyone around here at fall time hack all their flowerbeds down. Also when we raked the leaves we put them in the flowerbeds to give the plants protection for the winter.

I live in the burbs and have always wondered why people are obsessive over their lawns. At least with acreage there's some utility to keeping it clean. It doesn't make sense with a patch of grass to spray chems and go insane over it

One thing that might help with understanding some of these concepts, is to correct your wording of nature. Such as, most the plants you are talking about, are dead, or dieing. The perennials, go dormant over the winter, not die. They die-back. The plant materials left behind will help protect the roots from freezing through the winter. In nature these materials would usually breakdown into nutrients rich compost, so to speak, being recycled by the surrounding biom. Nature, slows down to help feed other coexisting creatures and micro creatures. Go out and ,LOOK, SEE, FEEL the surrounding natural environment close to what you have.
Inform yourself about how the indigenes people looked at the land. As well as nature herself. 🎉
All of this is true! I don't have a dictionary outside with me when inspiration hits to record these videos - they are just me talking. I do write with these words on my Substack though!

Not everyone can buy anything larger or wants to take out a loan for more land.

Interesting video, I didn't know a lot that was discussed. I wonder if I could do a garden myself with my incessant uncomfortableness around such large bees and insects buzzing around. My first thought with that in mind would be to invest instead in someone's farm (give money) and obtain a sufficient return. There are websites for this I remember seeing but you have to fit a certain criteria to take part I think.

If I didn't mulch my leaves I would have a yard just a big compost pile with most of it up against my house.
As far as my flowers go, I clear the beds in November but spread them out over the pasture by my house to see wild flowers sprout up the next year.
