Ponniyin Selvan: I (transl. Son of Ponni) is an upcoming 2022 Indian Tamil-language epic period action film directed by Mani Ratnam, who co-wrote it with Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan. Produced by Ratnam and Subaskaran Allirajah under Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions, it is the first of two cinematic parts based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel Ponniyin Selvan. The film stars an ensemble cast of Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Rahman and R. Parthiban. The music is composed by A. R. Rahman, with cinematography handled by Ravi Varman, editing done by A. Sreekar Prasad and production design by Thota Tharani. Ponniyin Selvan: I tells the story of the early life of Arulmozhivarman, who would become the Chola emperor Rajaraja I (947-1014).
Ever since its publication, the adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy's novel had been explored by several Tamil filmmakers, including an attempt by M. G. Ramachandran in the late 1950s. However nothing materialised mainly due to financial constraints. Decades later Mani Ratnam tried to adapt Ponniyin Selvan in the mid-1990s and early-2010s; these efforts were also unsuccessful. Stating it as his "dream project", Ratnam revived the adaptation in January 2019, with Lyca Productions on board to fund the project. After several changes in the cast and crew, production began in December 2019 and was ended in September 2021, having been halted twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film was shot in various places across India, with a few sequences being filmed in Thailand.

My genuine opinion: 'Ponniyin Selvan' is a Classic Periodic Drama movie. Director Mani Ratnam has done a wonderful job where he given almost 90% sincerity to the novel. He didn't add extra contents to build up cinema for the entertainment purposes. You can feel this on the sets of palace durbar scenes where he could have built much bigger durbar halls or palaces as the budget have the capability to do so, even though he didn't. He kept the sets minimalistic that look so realistic.
Each character has given their roles as almost equal importance for everyone, and the huge cast make the movie livelier. Everyone performed really well on their roles. Most importantly, in my opinion the best performed artist in this movie is dear Jayaram sir. He acted very brilliantly and still remain unsung.
BGM Music and songs where in safe hands of Maestro A R Rahman. The BGM is lifting the movie to next level.
The movie stands out from other Indian periodic fantasy movies like RRR or Bahubali. Don't expect big battles, strategies and action sequences. As this is not meant for commercial entertaining purpose it remains as a classic Mani Ratnam movie that we can watch it as reading a novel. Which means, the movie may not give you goosebump moments but make us involve in its story.
The main drawback I felt is the CGI technics. On the wideness of its budget, they could have done a better job to get more perfection and some of the shots taken where not came up to that notch. This is where Indian cinema should change as it still struggles for the perfection for VFX (just compare the CGI technics of Harry potter released on 1996)
Considering the movie as a whole, is a MUSTWATCH theatre experience. Even though it didn't leave us a question like 'Why Kattapa killed Bahubali', but I really wait for PS2 2023!!!

I never had the hype that a lot of other people had regarding Ponniyin Selvan. The reason for this is that I knew nothing of its source material, nor cared for it. When the movie comes out, I simply wanted to judge it off of its merits than by how much I wanted this movie to be something it's not. So having watched Ponniyin Selvan at today's 4 a.m. Show, I walked out of the theater thinking this movie was really good and to an extent understand why the source material had all the hype it did surrounding it.
The only drawback is how many characters there are to keep track of, as well as the overall lore behind each character and the overall setting. But that too goes on to be more clear as the movie progresses. Each character is very well written to be their own unique characters as well as being a cog in a greater story, and the story progresses in a way that keeps the whole thing fresh and exciting and keeps you wanting more. I'm not a big fan of the musical numbers as I usually find them very intrusive, but here, I didn't really mind them all too much. The photography was beautiful and so was the entire PS universe on screen.
It's as much a technical masterpiece as it is a narrative one. And I'm really glad to have been one of the first to watch this movie in this country. I'd definitely recommend you go check it out!!!
