I suppose I can say that Super Mario Odyssey is like a cross between this game and Super Mario 64. The reason I’m bringing this game into that one is because of all the different costumes that Mario can and usually does wear in Super Mario Odyssey.
The people NOT commenting about it remember a time when this was par for any idle animation. Every game was "we don't have enough polygons, how can we convey life??" "MAKE THE CHARACTER RAISE AND LOWER THEIR SHOULDERS EVERY SECOND." Looking at you, Mario 64
I believe it's a sound strategy in these early MP titles, as players can only carry a single item at a time. Grabbing a Plunder chest signals to your rivals that their items are not safe; a single plunder chest can be unfortunate to anyone else, as your ONLY advantage (your single-inventory item) is taken from you -- make a habit of buying plunder chests? Certain players may avoid buying other items altogether, for fear of you negating that edge. Fail to recognize the threat of a plunder chest, and get items anyways? Watch as your genie lamp or boo bell is snatched reliably away, time after time.
iirc characters in this game were programmed to have a bias for specific items when played by a CPU. Luigi always went for the skeleton key even on maps where there wasnt a good path. DK always wanted the plunder chest. Peach wanted the boo bell(?) And Yoshi gravitated towards the warp block But its almost like, they never programmed them to know the best time to use it.

Probably because in MP3 you could carry three items rather than only one, as well as more new items being introduced.
It means the economy in the Mario universe is good and there's plenty of mushrooms to go around cheap.
