There are way too many unknowns around Nichushkin to feel comfortable speculating. If this is a PED thing, a six month suspension seems totally reasonable. But if that's the case, I'm not sure how/why the Player Assistance Program is involved. On the other hand, this sure seemed like alcohol and/or coke when he entered the program the last time. An apparently mandatory suspension around that seems off to me simply because it ostracizes the idea of seeking help with addiction. It sucks he failed, but I thought the PAP was supposed to prevent players hiding their issues and get the help they need? If there's a suspension threat, doesn't that defeat the purpose and drive everything back underground?
I guess there's a third option of him showing up to work clearly on drugs, and that ends up being more of a standard workplace violation, but something in all this doesn't make sense. We may never know the whole story -- and that's fine, especially if it helps him and other players get help -- but it's a weird story as it stands.

In the NHLPA Player Assistance Program 6 month suspension comes after you fall off the wagon for the third time. If you are sober at the end of the suspension then the team has to take you back. If you fall off the wagon for the fourth time then it is 12 month suspension and the team doesn't have to you back at the end even if you are sober.

As Av fan, this stings, his game heavily rely upon and helps to get superstars' room. Avs need to make their own history, come back, and break game7 record. • @EugeneGodunov

From what I understand is that his previous stint in the assistance program had a random drug testing clause as a part of graduation. He failed it and now, there are consequences written to address such failure. If that's the case, we have no ground to argue if the punishment is either too harsh or too lenient. It's contractually solid.

The issue with the Soucy suspension is the fact that the league is playing favourites. It was a stupid thing to do and warranted a suspension, but so did Trouba's flying elbow attempt on Necas and Bennett's sucker punch KO to Marchand. The issue with players in the DAP is that fans of that player want them to play, at times OVER their health.
This time of year, the suspension is going to be longer. That's just how it is.
3 months isn't even the start of next season yet.
What these suspensions (especially consistent violations of the DAP) say to me.. the NHL actually values the player's health.
They've gone through tons of this before. 20 something with more money than a 70 year old knows how to spend? Yeah, that'll never turn ugly.
And unfortunately, if the issue doesn't get nipped early, escalation and tragedy aren't unlikely.
Mental health, physical health, and sustainability are critical factors in pro sports, and prioritizing an individuals health over their profitability margin is saying something positive.
There are a lot of things the NHL gets wrong. I could ask Vancouver and Edmonton and Boston (and pretty much every other team's fans) about it, but in this, I genuinely think they're one of the best.
Transparency needs to improve on a team and league level, but I'm one to argue that we don't need the intimate details of a person's life.
If they want to keep that private, they should have that option.
These are people, and they deserve their space and time too. As much as hockey players can be highly revered in countries like Canada and the US, it's important we don't forget that aspect of it.

To be honest I am surprised they made it out of the first round with our goal tending. The only reason we won was the amount of scoring we did. Playoffs are usually low scoring tightly contested games. We had to come back in so many games in the 3rd period, because our goalie is constantly in the first two periods giving up so many easy goals. On average is save percentage has to be in the 700 range in the first two periods. I told my buddy before the playoffs we will be lucky to get out of the first round with our goal tending. Now we lose Nichushkin for the second year in a row. He made a me decision instead of a team decision again. He picked himself over the team again and left them high and dry. Need to cut bait on him, because at this point he has done it twice in the playoffs. He is going to do it again. He is no good if he is not on the ice. This is my honest opinion as an Av's fan since they moved to Colorado. If they would have fixed the goalie situation I think the sky was the limit for this team.
