  • I cut this video down from a DEEP dive into regulations & lobbying surrounding greenwashing LOL so let me know if you want that. But after realizing how frustrated I was by the downplaying of the climate crisis in Kim's skims nipple bra ad I decided to edit this video down to that + some of the broad info in greenwashing! Hope it's informational and entertaining!

So we’re told to wear a bra to hide our nipples but they’re making ones to accentuate them…? I’ve been threatened by bosses I’d be fired if I didn’t wear bras (even with a small chest). What hypocrisy society’s beauty standards project.

You're allowed to have nipples only if your breasts are magically standing high on your torso like surgically made ones, not at the height natural ones stand at 🙃

It already existed over ten years ago too, I remember a Buzzfeed list of weird products including a bra designed to give a lifted braless look with nipples sculpted on. She isn't even original or clever with it, she's just after another profitable business idea to put her name on, and treats climate change like a joke.
Good point too about the classic Kardashian behaviour of glamourising something that those in working class settings get discriminated against for. Like yeah, nipples out could be a cheeky lil fashion moment to opt in and out of...if people weren't constantly harassed and subjugated for it when they have nipples visible for functional reasons (bras aren't comfy, and can be hard to fit on some bodies)
It's giving "Kim invented high fashion cornrows" meanwhile POC who've worn then for years are still assigned a bunch of negative stereotypes for wearing them to actually protect their hair.

One of the many things I love about your channel is that you aren't afraid to show your anger, and that you are transparent about how emotional it can be to think about these injustices. I am honestly exhausted by the greenwashing, and the skims thing has made me believe that we truly live in a dystopian reality. I do not have much hope for the future, but seeing people like you being so passionate about this reminds me how important it is for me to stay passionate and angry about these topics as well. So, I don't follow Kim K. I just don't have interest in her or her lifestyle. Tbh I'm not entirely sure why she's popular? I was really hoping the nipple bra was just a bra that only covers the nipples, have some corporate excuse to use less material for more money... Nope. On top of the fact the bra it's self, like you said basically made from fossil fuel. I can't with her. I really can't.
What drives me truly crazy is that millionaires like her have the ability to cause REAL change. To be the reason things get better and she cash grabs... How can you call anything else other than selfish?

Electricity has to come from somewhere and as of currently, a majority of our energy supply is not sustainable. Also, I had listened to a presentation on fire safety recently and it’s scary how awful/deadly those electronically charged batteries are. If one of those cars catches on fire, there’s virtually no way of putting it out! Not to mention inside of an attached garage 😨

Your videoed have taught me so much and have really opened my eyes to a new way of thinking about sustainability, green washing, ecominslmism, etc.
I saw this commercial on instagram a little ways back and I have to say our reactions to it were so dramatically different. I guess I skimmed over the first part that was commenting on climate change and instead was outraged that someone was trying to sell a product that we could easily get the same results for free by just not wearing a bra. Ive been a huge advocate for the free the nipple movement and haven’t worn one since 2012. This was one of those instances where I heard you in the back of my mind yelling “BUY LESS”. There is absolutely no reason to purchase this item. In a tmi moment, my nips are ALWAYS hard. It doesn’t have to be cold outside, the fabric rubbing against them does this so if I can have hard nips 24/7 so can anyone else by just removing their bra.
Btw on a side note when I get angry I cry too. It just goes to show how upset this really made you and I could feel it! I really hope that more people start to think and act as you do. Such a great role model

Great video! I'm from a country where EV's now make up the majority of new vehicles bought, and where electricity comes from renewable sources, and I STILL think the focus on EV's is used to greenwash the auto industry. It's also an excuse for politicians to not do real work to improve public transit infrastructure, but keep building highways and centring cars. EV's still contribute to congestion, and are a danger to cyclists and pedestrians! But they don't care. Politicians patting themselves on the back for the EV market share while completely neglecting rail infrastructure and efficient bus services, effectively forcing people to get cars (ev or not) out of lack of options drives me up a wall I swear! Drag tip: if tou want to make any bra into a "nipple bra" you can take rubber/silicone furniture feet/cabinet bumpers and stick them on the outside of your bra. It might look a little weird, but it's a way to give your bra nipples without exposing your own actual braless nipples to the cold without support.

This is kind of random, but I’ve been crying a lot this holiday season. Natural snowfall during November and even October, is actually a treasured childhood memory ❤. Now, everyone is saying how great the weather is, and running to their nearest store to buy “ flocked” Christmas trees 😢 I’m a northern hemisphere gal, and I get sooo depressed during Christmas. Because it’s now almost completely artificial. Even the snow is artificial 😢 And no one seems to care.

She could have used her influence in a much better way. But she CHOSE to do this. I notice that the payment to 1% for the planet is a "once off" so she's not intending to contribute to them in any way after this by the looks of it. I never liked/followed the kardashians anyway. From what I can gather, most of them seem shallow and that's just not my kind of people. However, after this episode, in my mind Kim Kardashian is downright despicable. It's just sick on so many levels to make a joke out of climate change while countries are burning and children are attending psychologists to deal with climate anxiety. Sick, sick, sick. Thanks for this Shelby.

I work for a sustainability consulting company focused on reducing plastic waste, and I've seen so many businesses fall into the trap of green-washing, specifically related to "compostable", "biodegradable" containers. 1. They're literally not lol (unless you have a state of the art composting facility that specializes in those products - which no one has) and 2. They're 2-3x more expensive than traditional plastic, non-biodegradable materials, and 3. Many of these are made with PFAS, chemicals added to create a grease barrier on the container, which do not break down and instead accumulate over time and are linked to multiple health conditions (cancers, liver damage, weakened immune systems, etc ) It's always so frustrating for the business owners to realize they've been spending MORE money on stuff that is WORSE for the environment and our health. So for current and future business owners, compostable products are okay as long as they are BPI-certified. Like she said in the video, keep an eye out for vague descriptions and items that seem too good to be true. They probably are! Let me know if you have any questions. 😁

I agree with the analysis of EVs, but you left out the part where lithium batteries require cobalt and therefore slave labor in the DRC. The strip mining and poverty this is creating in that country has led to conditions where a woman or girl is violently s***ally assaulted every 4 minutes.

I’m 100% always going to to that because I CANNOT STAND the bs and greenwashing but I wish more companies were transparent and had tradable materials so smaller businesses and even consumers can make the right choices. This! Even if they say that they support climate change efforts, usually their websites are so vague and don't offer any solutions or practical examples. And most candidates have never worked or volunteered in the sustainability sphere. I think that's a big one - even if they are not a climate change activist themselves, I'd ask how are they surrounding themselves AND listening to experts? Have/will they consult with scientists to formulate and implement their climate change policy? Or are they just regurgitating the keywords that they've heard, but not actually doing any work?

I want to give some neutral feedback, but I want to let you know that I really respect you and you have genuinely helped me become a more eco conscious person.
I hope you will do more videos about creating community and put your efforts into doing that. It seems to me that a lot of your videos are about what not to do, the problem with big companies, etc. This is good, but I think we need to focus on building communities that are environmentally conscious and sustainable. I also think it may be making you unhappy to focus so much on who is making the problem worse. I would love to see some content about that. Maybe come green influencers coming together to educate or develop an app to help promote local resources?
I know it can be scary to recommend resources, because we can be wrong, but, I say this with respect, I feel there is a choice here to be a "zero waste influencer" or a green educator. And I think you have been and can be the later. That is the content I love most from you.
So my suggestion is maybe do a series on "green initiatives in [city]". Then list out some resources in the top 10 American cities. Or collab with Australian/English youtubers to do their areas as well.

Americans (and I am one) can have incredibly myopic views of the world. Suggesting something is a good idea because another country does it is a turn OFF for segments of our population. Even if people can’t travel to other countries, they can still read, right? We can learn things through reading and making a little effort. 🤦‍♂️

Most charities are not in a position to turn down donations. therefore, they accept a donation at the cost of the misuse of their association.

Shelbi, thank you so much for all of your hard work and passion. I've learned so much from you and respect you immensely 💚
One idea that I've been thinking about a lot recently is if it would be possible to regulate or enforce a law on big companies to at least only use recycled materials in their packaging. Greenwashing is very much a problem, but focusing on regulating it in marketing doesn't seem proactive to me? Why not go further back and try to regulate these companies before or during their production cycle, rather than after when the product is already on the store shelf? I would LOVE a ban on virgin plastic, where it would force big companies to only use recycled plastic (or a better material entirely), and require them to implement free and accessible recycling programs for their products. We've gotta figure out a way to get to closed-loop business models - or what I'd call adjacent-loop models - because waste will keep piling up, plastic or not. Adjacent-loop businesses would be required to collaborate with a business(s) that can take each others waste and use it in their own products. Ex: I saw a video about an Asian business the other day that takes pineapple skin waste from a fruit business, and they turn those pineapple skins into personal care products so that the pineapple skins don't go into the landfill.
But yeah, unfortunately like you said, the U.S. government is currently controlled by these big companies and they'd never allow for the passage of laws that regulate them more, if they can help it. And the vast majority of (federal-level) politicians are spineless crooks who are in office simply to enrich themselves. They don't care about making the world better or holding accountable those who are hurting the world. We desperately need a mass revolution! And we, the average citizens, need to take advantage of the Constitution's permission that allows us to overthrow our government when it no longer serves the people...which is long overdue!

I really do wish there was more regulation for biodegradable products. For example what conditions is it being biodegraded, how long does it take to biodegrade, what are the stages, what are the off-products(?) of that process. Like I found out last year that some of the composting bags I was using take over 2 years to biodegrade, which to me feels too long, especially verses no bag and just washing the container between uses.
