I felt that the female characters were written as strong and represented their generations when the show premiered. Over the years, the Walton daughters evolved especially during the War Years, to take on the responsibilities of working and child rearing when a significant part of the male population were called to duty. Also, they showed women working for the Red Cross and the character of Toni serving our country. Again, the producers, writers, directors and actors did a marvelous job in depicting the era.I hope that you are staying cool this summer.

Hi Judy, as a woodworker I cringe at times when I see John and Grandpa working at the mill with that spinning exposed saw blade. Yikes! Were there ever any accidents with the saw or special precautions to keep everyone safe, especially when little ones like Elizabeth were running around the set? Thanks Judy, love you!

I’m not Judy BUT I grew up with my daddy and brothers using a guava saw blade that was attached to the tractor with a wide belt to make the saw go around for cutting wood.
My daddy had told my sisters and I that we weren’t allowed to get too close to the tractor/ saw while it was running and we knew when he told us that we were to obey him so we never got close to except that the wood was thrown into a pile away from the tractor so that we girls could take a wheelbarrow full of wood into the house to use in the pot belly stove.

Judy, quick follow up set of questions on the school question.
    1) I know, for example, Mayim Bialik was obviously schooled on set since she did the show Blossom during her teen years -> but she also went to college to get a PhD. Did you personally or a member of your cast, ever consider or do a college degree after the Waltons ended?
    2) When it came to things like SAT or ACT test prep or getting a drivers license, which normally high school students do through school, how was it handled on your show.
Thanks again. You are a very safe zone on UA-cam and I always appreciate how positive and supportive the comments section is. Cheers!

I liked the questions regarding the schooling. Not having 30 - 35 other kids in your class must have been so wonderful not only for you but for the teacher. Public schools can be so difficult when you might have a student who might act out and need disciplining sometimes on a daily basis. That takes away learning for those who are there to be taught. I'm sure Kami Cotler can relate to that then being taught on set and now when she was or still is a teacher.

Good segment, no one can tell it better then the ones that were there. Im sure a woman director brings a different vibe to the production, my great aunt Helen born in 1899 told me the world would be better off if more woman were in politics and were presidents, it might just as well apply to directors too! I grew up in northern California the same age as you when you mentioned school all those books go through my mind that said California State Series on the inside cover. Starting with the first grade reader. With Tom, Betty, Susan and their dog spot. Pony and bunny too. I loved the illustrations. I also remember when they were trying out the "new math" it was confusing for me. The history book in 7 grade had a picture of a Egyptian statue head. I also remember the folk dancing we did. The presidents fitness was another thing i remember it must have been national it was started by president Kennedy. i remember when John F Kennedy was assinated even remember seeing Oswald shot on live tv because everyone was glued to the television as it was happening. Im guessing you might have a good early memory too being a year older than me. I do remember all the sadness at such a young age and certainly did connect seeing lilte John John follow behind the horse drawn casket. Perhaps you could share you memory on that when you feel it appropriate. You reaffirm one thing we are our biggest critics. Don't know how you do it i know i don't like hearing or seeing my self on film and voice recordings even though I get positive feed back its just a natural response, unless perhaps you have a narcissistic personality disorder. Don't think you do. According to Dr Ramani there are many narcissist in your industry. In corporations too they want to be on top and will do what ever it takes to get there. The number one characteristic of a narcissist is lack of empathy. Im sure you know this already. It might be interesting to anyone else reading this. Thanks again for your continued epic segments. : )

Hi Duane. When you wrote about JFK's death and how the world stood still to mourn him, it's a memory I've recalled from Documentaries and History class (elementary school years later). I wasn't around yet, but this unforgettable tragic event replays in my mind. This must have been devastating to witness as children (You and Judy and for all who were present in America at that time).
With everything that is happening now, politically. I am saddened. Doesn't matter which side you're on. Not partisan here. Just have a lot of empathy for our sitting President. We are all aging or will age (if we're lucky to live long and reasonably healthy) - as Judy once said "aging isn't for sissies". ❤💙🤍

@@judynorton2598 we certainly did see our share of changes. I remember so many older adults telling me we didn't have TV when we were growing up, we listened to the radio, My great aunt Helen was around before we had radio she said in those days everyone was carrying around sheet music of the latest popular songs. One thing I remember was when all the moms and girls stopped wearing dresses. Within a few years they all seemed to be wearing pants. Or a pantsuit as I recall. I could tell at my young age it was very libertariting. I actually missed seeing teachers and mothers in those pretty dresses. Guess that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to all the changes we experienced. Now we're riding the sea of change with this wonderful technology we get to enjoy with social media. We are also experiencing the downside of our technology revolution with to much information where we all have a voice. I know your Moms from England and your dad Canada. My grandma Winnie was born in England then they moved to Canada in 1909. Fortunately they moved to San Francisco in 1915. That's why I'm a native Californian. Iv heard wonderful stories about Santa Monica from friends that were born and raised there in the 1930s they moved to Semi Valley before the moved here to northern California. :)

Hi, Judy and Everyone! I'm watching a day late! Since youre answering questions about the children's schooling, I wondered about the school books used on the set of Miss Hunter's classroom. Were the school books from the 1930s era? For a time our family had a couple Math books from the early 1900s if I remember correctly. The illustrations werre very old-fashioned. Most of the word problems had to do with farming, sewing, more practical things. The hardcover books were much smaller in size length and width than modern books. It did seem to me the Walton's children carried books of smaller size in scenes going to/from. Do you remember looking at any of the books and what were they like? Thanks for another interesting BTS with The Walton's! Have a safe and lovely weekend! ❤

    • @garywarmee4367
      @garywarmee4367 Місяць тому +1

I think the episode, working with his movie friend Richard Thomas, would be memorable to him. THE SHIVERY is a lot of fun but feels forced onto the characters. The wedding night concept is so backwoods, even for Waltin's Mountain in 1937, with John Boy especially boorish here. He and Ike are not that agressive that they would be dragging BD out in the middle of the night in his pajamas against his wishes. I am surprised to hear that John experienced same on his wedding night with Olivia. You crazy kids, did that really happen?
I think young Olivia may be wearing a dark sailor dress that will be passed on to Erin for many episodes later in the series when she is in her charming heyday?
And there are so many patchwork quilts on the show. Occasionally there is consistency where the audience will see the same quilt on the same bed, but they seem evolving constantly. Maybe they are used like sheets over a bedspread where they are constanly being washed and recycled. Everything is always in the little things that are noticed.

Judy, I know that when you were originally cast for "The Homecoming", your Mom was Patricia Neal, and the physical resemblance was near enough. But at the time of "The Waltons", you actually had quite a convincing resemblance to Michael Learned, just as David Harper had a strong resemblance to Ralph Waite; my opinion, of course. (I realize that there are many considerations involved in casting, and that getting people who actually look like family isn't always possible, but sometimes, as in those two examples, it actually happens.)

Good day Judy, entertaining and informative as usual. I have a question or two about the Baldwin sisters. It's pretty clear that the sisters are well-off. Is it because of their father, Judge Baldwin, past willings and dealings in various business ventures ( including maybe making a ton of money from " the recipe"?. I don't believe the sisters ever sold it. Maybe an inheritance of some kind? Just wondering how they maintained their way of living. Maybe spending very little money. Haven't heard anything mentioned about their mother. Thanks Judy.

I agree with your comments about dress codes etc, It would have been silly to dress a female in a mini skirt for the 1930s, however you (Mary-Ellen) did dress in skimpy shorts in the episode "The dust-bowl cousins", in season 1. In additon, it was the 1970s, although views were changing as what was permisable for females to do, dress codes for men and women were still rather traditional. Then again, there was the episode were Jim Bob dressed in one of Erin's old dresses, because that's what people did in those days.

I like how you always refer to your character, and how you recognized the characters traits. I always thought the episode where John goes to work for the Dept of Transportation and was very insubordinate was out of character for him and not how he taught all of you to act and behave. They never developed that, properly, either, as in, it was not like they had him petition for workers rights in a hot office. They just dropped it, and the job did not work out. I think he quit. Not something people would want to emulate.
