In only 23 minutes, this show explores and explains the nature of: 1. greed, 2. currencies, 3. wealth concentration, 4. wealth distribution, 6. the benefits of rational discourse. Well done, ABC Weekend Specials.
The line that always stood out for me from this (and I am happy to see it finally showed up and I did not just hallucinate this show) was, "You wished for money, not friends."
I saw this the first time it aired and i always remembered it. It just came to me to look it up. i mean, sheesh, we are in the future now. From reading the comments, it seems like we all saw this at the same time due to it only being aired once. I was 7 in 1983.
@@MMAfighter38113 trust me Alot of us did but we were just in the moment during the 1980s, sports, video games, getting on girls nerves, mall hopping etc
I was 12 when this originally aired. I remember it somewhat vividly. My three wishes would’ve been 1 $100 billion spendable free and clear US dollars, 2 a working TARDIS, and 3 1983 Elvira. I don’t think I’d change those wishes now. I was a smart kid.
Fatsnatch Muffdiver it was! “All the Money in the World” was released in 2017 and was directed by Ridley Scott. Christopher Plummer played the leprechaun.
I remember this! And I have the same question I had as a kid when I first saw it.... Why didn't the parents get wishes when the leprechaun told them his name?
I saw this when I was a kid too. It’s pretty much exactly as I remember it, just shorter. I thought of it as a simple way to show the ramifications of wealth hoarding.
Now I have to find the show from when i was a kid about a kid going down a trap door in an old ladies mansion and finding treasure and a skeleton. Can’t remember the name from the 80s. May mystery mansion or something
Plot hole: When the parents and the President heard the leprechaun's name, they should have also been granted three wishes. It's funny to think we thought that all the money in the world would have fit in a barn and a house. Jeff Bezos's money alone wouldn't fit in them. Especially when the close up showed mostly $1.00 bills. I'm putting waaaaaaay to much thought into this episode.
Wasn't there an episode where a friend wished that his friends all had a wish and they made a stink of things? It vaguely remember it being a follow-up episode with the same leprechaun but with another group of kids.
Honestly I thought the same thing. But then again I didn’t see skin color till I was in my teens and people kept pointing it out. I saw everyone the same.
Cmon now, this story stretches credulity! The President at the time was Ronald Reagan. This President character is a representation of him. As if a Republican would ever buy a black kid a bike! Give us a break, leprechaun after-school special!
So I did a little investigating and discovered that this show was based on a book that was released in 1979. The President at the time was Jimmy Carter. So the character in this story is a representation of Carter, not Reagan. Carter was a decent man so naturally was a Democrat, and not a scum-sucking Republican. Now this story makes perfect sense and is totally plausible. Carry on.
This truly brings tears to my eyes, my childhood in a time capsule.

Holy crap. I saw this in its original broadcast, and it pops into my head every so often. Crazy how much of this I remember.
I so very randomly thought about this show that I saw as a little kid 35 years ago and wudda ya know, UA-cam has it. Good stuff!
Had the same thing happen just out of the blue.
Same

Same man I literally had to google the plot haha
Wow! Still remember this. I'm actually looking for the 1978 weekend special about "The $1,000 Bill".
I remember watching this as a child, now I'm watching it with my children. Thanks for sharing this gem!
Unbelievable! I haven't seen this in over 30 years! I started to think it was a figment of my childhood imagination lol.
The author Bill Brittain came to my school! I loved his books! And now they tore down my old school. :(
I have been wanting to watch this again for nearly 30 years. Thank you very much for the upload.

Same here, I was also 7 in 1983. I only found 1 reference to this version of it on the web, which was this upload. Good stuff.
Back in 1983 I was 11s-year old
Maaaaaan, memories! I never thought I'd see this again. Thanks for uploading.
I also so very randomly thought about this show that I saw as a little kid 35 years ago and wudda ya know, UA-cam indeed has it. Good stuff indeed!
I know this says it was produced in 1983, but I feel I saw it as a kid sometime in the '70s.
We started watching this in sixth grade in 2001. We left off at where the army came in, and never finished watching it. Sixteen years later...
MY 3 WISHES

I used to watch these on Saturday mornings.
I remember watching cartoons, this, American Bandstand & Casey Kasem's America's Top 10 every Saturday

Kim Hamilton had a cameo in the final season of Leave it to Beaver- the only black person who ever appeared on the show.
How crazy is it that UA-cam has this!

Had bits and pieces I remembered, like others said 30+ years went by quick
I could of swore I remember the leprechaun drinking soda pop for the first time and he couldn't stop burping. Maybe that was a different episode
maybe that was the horror movie franchise leprechaun lol
This needs to be a real movie.
Fatsnatch Muffdiver it was! “All the Money in the World” was released in 2017 and was directed by Ridley Scott. Christopher Plummer played the leprechaun.
🍀THANK YOU! 🍀 I've been wanting to see this again for the longest time.
Wonderful thank you!
This was the 70s to whom it may concern
They showed this to me way back in 2002 in sixth grade after our sex ed class (of all things). I'd never thought I'd see it again.
I remember this! And I have the same question I had as a kid when I first saw it.... Why didn't the parents get wishes when the leprechaun told them his name?
Whoops!
I remember the book from elementary school

I wonder if Flan might be a remnant of the Wizard of Oz or a relative of one of the little people of Oz.
Flan probably ended up working on Wall Street and contributed to the financial crisis in 2008
the father played on The Waltons.
He was also on the show "227."
He played and still plays everything! His name is Hal Williams and his IMDb page is longer than my arm.
is there a version where the wishing kid is white? I remember watching a version where the kid is white or I have bad memory
Weird. I was thinking the same thing. I even looked it up to see, but nope.
Honestly I thought the same thing. But then again I didn’t see skin color till I was in my teens and people kept pointing it out. I saw everyone the same.
I also thought the kid was white. Very strange.
