- This was the worst year in Star Wars history, at least if you were within the New Republic. We'll take a look at the Thrawn Campaign, which was immediately followed up by Operation Shadow Hand and the Dark Empire. We'll talk all that for today's Star Wars video!

The start of the Yuuzahn Vong War would rank pretty high
Exactly. The Yuuzhan Vong fucked. Shit. Up. And they relished in it because they believed they were committing themselves to a holy cause.
Yeah the amount of genocide in that was so over the top
@@neofulcrum5013 Trillions perished
@@teleportedbreadfor3daysmy point exactly
Yeah but the Vong were hell for every faction.
In Legends, I always thought it was 27 ABY during the Yuuzhan Vong War, when the Vong conquered Coruscant. This wasn't just bad for the New Republic, it was bad for everyone in the galaxy, New Republic or Imperial Remnant. Remember, 365 trillion beings died in that war.
The war was terryfying, but I think this "absolute worst" statement is a bit over the top, yes almost 400 trillion died, but the Galaxy contained more than 100 quadrillion (not every planet was conquered, likely not even in the Vong territory, they had limited amount of ships & warriors). Also, it was never confirmed if that number outclasses other galactic conflicts of the past, which were never provided with a specific death toll.
Imo for galactic civilisation as a whole the worst moment came nonetheless in 19BBY, when 25 millenia of democracy and the ancient Jedi order protecting it were wiped out in favour of brutal Sith dictatorship, marking the peak of imbalance in the Force.
The truce at bakura has some Henky sh*t happen, or the cloned emperor on Bastion(?)2(?) years later...
@@seanhewitt603 That would be Byss, 6 years later.

Me, a total Legends noob: “Oh, I guess it’s just the Thrawn Campaign then?”
Eck: “Thrawn was just the beginning.”
Me: 😳
just wait until the war I have trouble remembering how to spell and pronounce it.
@@Revick_Revas I assume you're talking about the "Yuzhan-Vong" or something?
Before watching, I was thinking of them too, but when Eck started his video with "9-and-a-half ABY was when the Thrawn Campaign really began" I thought, "oh, ok, so it's mostly Thrawn then?" 😅
@@UGNAvalon People miss the horryfying impact of 19BBY pointing out at later dates, I don't think Shadowhand or even Vong Invasion surpass that. It was essentially the subjegation of the entire Galactic civilisation to tye dark side.
@@Koopyspappy 365 trillions to be precise, in a Galaxy if billions of planets and over 100 quadrillion sentient inhabitants. We have no idea how that death toll compares to other conflicts, vecause we lack the numbers. But one thing remains regardless - as horryfying as the Vong were, they didn't win. They could never win. Palpatine won and he almost remained in controll forever.
Eck: "We'll take this from a good guys' perspective. When did things really, really fall apart?"
Me: From what I remember of Legends, my vote would have to be any time Borsk Fey'lya was involved in things.
Fall of Coruscant during the Vong war has to be up there. Especially because it runs concurrent to Anakin Solo's death.
The first year after order 66 must've been rough though, at least for a Jedi. The order you devoted your life to that had lasted for thousands of years was mercilessly taken away from you in an instant by the soldiers you once trusted with your life, those who survived were cursed to see the galaxy they swore to protect be corrupted by the dark side. Every day you wake up in an unending nightmare wishing you could have just died in the initial culling instead of living your life in hiding from the new Empire and their inquistors. The saddest part, and probably the reason it isnt the saddest year in Star Wars history, is that its only really the saddest for the Jedi. The rest of the galaxy were so thoroughly convinced by Palpatine's words that they cheered on the Jedi Order's demise. Truly a dark time.
Rough? It was an age of peace and prosperity The Jedi betrayed the Chancellor and with great reluctance The Emperor-then Chancellor Palpatine reorganized the Republic into the First Galactic Empire! For a Safe and Secure society.
Yeah, being hunted down by those you trusted would demoralize anyone
The creation of a Skywalker sith from any generation has got to be a dark year for the non force users...

This video is so perfectly timed with my reading of Dark Empire where I kept asking myself again and again "Wait didn't the New Republic hold Coruscant during the Thrawn Triology? How are they in hiding at Pinncale Base?". This video definitely cleared it up for me!!
Ironic. Sidious body could move his soul but in the end he was destroyed once and for all by a blaster from everyone's favorite smuggler.
I remember going from the Thrawn Trilogy to the Jedi Academy trilogy and the first book brought up the Emperor's return and Coruscant falling to the Imperials and I remember thinking when the hell did all this happen, did I miss a trilogy?
I like the idea of videos like this basically being accounts from historians in universe. Kind of like how the Essential Guide books were something akin to historical reference books.
I’d say the first year of owning Coruscant by the Rebels. The Krytos virus, bacta shortage, Imperial sabotage attacks, just hell all around for them.
Almost any year in my opinion the galaxy could never catch a break from war.
@Michael Andrei Palon Definitely I rather see planets get destroyed than live on Earth with a government I don't care for or president I don't care dies in office.

Its not one year, but in terms of eras its gotta be the Sith Wars. The Great Sith War, Mandalorian Wars, Jedi Civil War, and First Jedi Purge were all literal back-to-back events. Imagine living in that era, im surprised everyone in the galaxy didnt become an alcoholic.
I feel like either 19bby, the Mid Rim Campaign by the Empire OR 26 aby, when the Vong had just started their stomps
Yuuzhan Vong War... 300 trillion dead IIRC.
Yeah, but that was a lot more than one year.
Yeah, but it was only 4 years. Any one of those years is a contender for 1st place.
@@LegendsLiterature Do we know how many beings died in the previous 4 decades? Or even eralier eras? Not really. We don't know how many beings (especially aliens) the Empire exterminated in each hear of their rule, we don't know how many died during Candoriam Plague, New Sith Wars etc..
@@emzonik8851 The years that the Empire reigned were certainly bad, but the Yuuzhan Vong War affected almost every being in the galaxy, one way or another. The Empire’s atrocities affected a lot of very specific groups. Their grip on the galaxy was definitely felt but never to the violent extent of the Vong.
@@LegendsLiterature That's the thing, you don't know that, the dark times were not properly fleshed out in the EU before the reboot. What we also do know is that the Empire controlled (almost) the entire known Galaxy for decades while the Vong claimed a vast portion of it for 2 years (some areas for 4) but did not directly affect every planet within their terriroty. Vastly more individuals experienced the Imperial terror than the Vong's (I'd actually say it was the Vong invasion that was felt more locally in specific areas of the Galaxy, in particular where the vongforming was utilised), yet unlike in the NR/NJO era they had far less access to information and contact beyond their home systems. And while it's rearly depicted, it is stated the Imperials were eliminating entire species', the only thing we're lacking is the numbers, that they were covering up anyway. Of course it's not to undermine the latter, the invasion was terryfyingly brutal, it's clear as day in the novels. But in the end it is Palpatine who's the main villan, EU writers never put that into question, thus his rule is supposed to be the darkest day for the Galaxy by design.
Aside from Disney going out of its way to literally dismantle Star Wars I think it's worst was when they tried turning Star Wars into Warhammer 40k...
I never get that comparison, I don't know how much of the EU you guys discovered but it never reached 40k level. 4ABY - 29ABY is a period of chaos, that's all. You got the strongest faction in SW history crumbling in fire and blood with an outside force subsequently invading.
With its edgelord antagonists who had a fetish for self-harm.
@@minicle426 The idea was derived from real world history. Fanatic religiosity often tends to push people to inflicting pain on themselves for the sake of whatever they worship. The above opinions about the Vong come from the people who just looked at their images, watched a 5 minute long video on YT and think they know their Lore.

getting here at 57 seconds is crazy. Also I'd say that the worst period in star wars is definently the Yuuzhon Vong invasion.
shut up bro
I wouldn't really say so, not for 100% at least. We've no idea what actually happened to galactic population between 19BBY and 11ABY.
The Vong just used the galaxy's weakness after the GCW, briefly invaded a half of it, butchered many beings but in the end couldn't sustain their war machine already after 2 years and were pushed back completely.

Worst year is Disney's High Republic were the jedi Temple have a baking contest for some reason.
I would have chosen any year of the Yuuzhan Vong war, personally, especially the later ones.

That's 0,365% of the Galactic Empire's population. We have the number but we don't have the data to compare it with other galactic crysis'.

Starting with exar kun and finishing with the Sith triumvirate would rank high I think
Eck, after doing a search on UA-cam I realized something. There are barely any videos on Talon Karrde. I think you should do a video on the clever old smuggler.
The year when legends became non canon imo 👀
3951 during the events of Kotor 2 was a pretty crappy year.
A great take! I’m still not interested after the last two movies in seeing Rey do what we wanted to see Luke do though.
"War, War Never Changes"
Eckhart should try to do Fallout Styled monologue upon Star Wars universe.
According the audio drama version of Dark Empire, the fall of Coruscant took place literal DAYS after the defeat of Thrawn which is absolutely insane based on how that trilogy ended.
Where do you get all these great clips of space battles for your channel, is it a game, or just star wars media I've never heard of or seen?
Does anyone know what series of comics and books were used in the video? Thanks
Hello there

General Kenobi
Very interesting video topic Eckford.
The Yuuzhan Vong war is up there, specifically the beginning,
If at all, it wouldn't be the beginning but the middle, when the Vong advance came to a hold but the Republic was still at its lowest.
As I said befire tho, the nightmare of 19BBY deserves far more attention.
U should probably do a video on the top 5 fleets in canon and Legends that could defeat both the Exegol Sith Eternal fleet and the Resistance Citizens Fleet from Rise of Skywalker. The video should be each fleet compared to both opposing fleets, like, Republic Coruscant fleet vs Exegol Fleet then the same Coruscant fleet against the Citizens Fleet. Pls take this idea into account, Eckhart! I'm a big fan of ur channel!
In our world it was 2017, in SW I’d argue the day of order 66 was the worst
Yuuzahn Vong wars be like:
*"Am I a joke to you?"*
So late to the game and not related to the video but finally ordered your vite ramen flavor it's great. Thanks.
can you do a battle breakdown about the nadiri dockyards please?
I really need to get more into legends, i read heir to the empire but that is it, also exellent thumbnail there.
I want to hear about that marriage on a super star destroyer
Lots of interesting stuff happened in canon. I never tied all of those stories into a unified timeline before. Thanks!
There is no Episode 10. Rey's movie is just that, Rey's movie.
You should specify this is for The Expanded Universe (Legends) (which is what we know the most about and is arguably better anyway), but several of your comments and visuals early on made me think you were talking about Disney Canon.
I would have said the first year of the Vong Invasion
I loved reading the Thrawn trilogy and the Dark Empire books. So much better than anything Disney has been able to crap out. The only thing worth cannon in Rogue One. One movie worth watching!
Have you watched Andor as well? Worth your time if you haven't, or wait until Season 2 is out so you can watch both seasons for just the price of one month's subscription
Legends is canon
Solo gets a bad rap I think. I quite enjoyed it, it's a lot better than the reputation it gets - I'd place it above all the sequels, Phantom Menace and AOTC personally
As bad as that year was for the New Republic, it was far worse for the Empire. The Empire never recovered from the catastrophic losses of Shadow Hand and the Imperial Mutiny.
Imagine if the GA gets formed in Star Wars cannon somehow
I had no idea how much they ripped off from legends for the sequels
Basically everything. Other than Luke becoming a pathetic quitter, that is.
As someone who didn't grow up with star wars legends material this was very overwhelming😂😂
Since we don’t know any of the worlds actually destroyed by the galaxy gun, I’m just gonna headcanon that Kijimi exists in legends and just also happened to be destroyed by the reborn emperor
"It's a canon event"
I'd say the day when abeloth was created or maybe the day when the celestials decided to do some astroengineering and bisect the galaxy
Abeloth was a nasty piece of work, all right. But we still don't really know what the full range of her powers are, or exactly what the nature of her existence is, so it's hard to really compare her to anyone else. Also, the celestials may well have had good intentions. They do seem to have created The Maw specifically to imprison Abeloth, after all.
@@davidlundquist1979 any species that supposedly guided the force itself and being able to modify the galaxy on a whim must be doing it to either keep us in or keep something out. They blocked the galaxy with a hyperspace boundry, the vong found a slight hole in it at vector prime
Holy crap, all that was in a singe year?!
What timing. A week after that one Dark Empire video was released.
Should do a video on all the Solo kids
No year is worse than the year that Solo and last jedi came out
27 ABY The fall of Coruscant to the Yuuzhan Vong
Well in current canon around the time of Empire Strikes Back when The Empire was pretty much kicking the shit out of The Rebellion for the most part and by the time they finally catch their breaths they find out about The Death Star II. And apparently there is going to be a droid rebellion in this time frame.
At first I thought the title meant the worst year as a fan, I thought pick any one from the last decade. It keeps getting worse.
I’d say one of the worst periods of Star Wars in universe history would be the 2000 years dark age during the Great and New Sith Wars. Revan’s time to Bane’s time, nothing but war, technology went backwards, and Republic became a Jedi tan dictatorship during the New Sith Wars.
1. The Dark Times
2. Republic Dark Age
3. Yuuzhan Vong War
4. Rakatan rule
5. Sith - Imperial war
We don't really have the specific data required to rank all that, but the Dark Times at least for me feel like nr 1
The Etrnal Empire conquest that started 3636 BBY would be one of the worst years. Loosing most of your Jedi and Sith to an unknown force that devastated your fleets and subjugated the galaxy in a year.
Imagine how much awful stuff someone who was born around 5BBY and lived for a good 80-90 years would’ve had to seen/experienced
Have you played Star Wars Shatterpoint?
@@michaelandreipalon359There is a tabletop game called Star Wars shatterpoint
Not good with Star Wars history but I would say kotor 2 events or the mandalorian wars
Just imagine if you're born in Leends in 30 BBY and you live a good long life and die in your eighties in around 53 ABY. You spend the vast majority of your life either in a war or under a tyrannical regime. Sometimes both.
Clone Wars 22-19 BBY, The Empire 19-1BBY, First Galactic Civil War 1 BBY-19 ABY, Vong War 25 ABY - 29 ABY, Second Galactic Civil War 41-42 ABY. And probably more I forgot.
Living in Legends would suck.
The thing is, not every planet suffered equally, some people suffered during certain conflicts, at other times they were chilling. For somebody living on Coruscant the worst years wpuld come in 19BBY, 4ABY, 7ABY (argubly) and of course 10ABY & 27ABY.
Ooo I'd love to know what happens with Jeana and...her brother....Jeb? Anyway I used to read the books about them as a kid but idk what happened after the first 5 or 6 books

Battle of dreadnoughts fan film
Say Eck, I heard the Rishi Maze might have got a mention in Jedi Survivor. If that’s true, could you do a video on it on that clips channel of yours?
Also with all due respect, I’m doubtful that the galaxy will have a new galactic government after Exegol. Even if some of the First Order survives to bide it’s time and even if the Resistance tries to create a new government, there will be serious doubt in a new government after seeing how quickly the New Republic fell after the First Order destroyed Hosnian Prime. What was left of the military was divided up by surviving senators to protect their homes, leaving the rest of the galaxy to get conquered. And despite the Resistance being the first ones to fight the First Order and spearheading the attack on Exegol, it took a fleet of people from all across the galaxy to defeat the Sith Eternal. Basically I’m doubtful people really will have any trust for galactic institutions. They may decide that the galaxy never needed a galactic government and try to live on their own. Maybe some worlds sign alliances recognizing how working together allowed them to defeat a massive enemy, but otherwise there may be no galactic unity.
Actually, that would be a cool story for the movie. After all, supposedly this new movie is about Rey rebuilding the Jedi Order, so maybe at the same time her friends from the Resistance are also trying to recreate a new galactic government, but they’re opposed by so many planets who don’t believe in living together anymore. Despite the intentions of these worlds though, there will be serious negative consequences. For one thing, any planet rich enough will be able to create superweapons or massive militaries and attack each other. Planets that are attacked may have allies, but otherwise may get no help unless the attackers prove to be a galactic threat. Maybe surviving members of the First Order manipulate worlds to stay independent of the new government, so that they can slowly take them over by infiltrating their governments. Or just like in the Phantom Menace, the bad guys are going to be corporations who will really thrive in this era. No galactic laws to restrict them. And planets will still be dependent on trade guilds. The happy ending for the movie would not just include the Jedi Order returning to the galaxy, but several worlds change their minds and join the new galactic government to bring the galaxy back to the thousand year peace preceding the Clone Wars.
Yeah, things took a massive south turn when Dark Empire happened, but that can make swell storytelling.

But what about the best years? I'd argue it's actually the early years of the Legends Empire. They utterly wiped out the pirate kingdoms and weakened the hutts, giving hundreds of billions of people more freedom than under the republic. Even better, the corruption of the Old republic was being crushed, and the Empire had a good ten years before people like Tarkin starting overruling the senate.
Just by securing its own interior, the Empire did more to improve the lives of the most people than the republic had done for thousands of years. Sadly it ended up even worse than the republic.
Really? You'd pick that over the several times people thought the Sith were gone for good, and they could finally live in peace? Or after the end of the Pius Dea era, when it seemed equal rights for all had been restored? Dictatorships often start out by making token gestures to improve the lives of the common people, but that doesn't mean they're not still oppressive overall.
The Republic cannot repel threats of that magnitude

If Rey's movie doesn't begin to set up the Vong then disney will have missed another golden opportunity to draw from legends
Who cares about Vong without Luke's Order there? If they wanted to draw from Legends they would have been making faithful adaptations, instead the whole thing was declared non-canon and then KK said they have no 800-page novels.
