      Thanks bicycle guy! Here's what I always say to anyone looking into getting into hotshot:
      When Darrick got into it, he had some experience with pulling trailers while working the lawn care industry. I know if people are hiring they want SOME kind of experience. I've only heard of 1 so far providing the truck and trailer and just paying the driver a % but then again I don't really search out to see how many people do it. Just whatever you do, don't go out and buy a brand new truck and trailer before even seeing if you would like doing this. It's a huge commitment and you need to get to know the industry before jumping into it! If you are wanting to start your own authority look up "Josh D Hotshot" on UA-cam. He does a great series on steps and costs of doing it. If you are wanting to work under someone else's authority, you might want to see if you could rent a truck (enterprise from Goshen Indiana is the only place we have heard of that does it) pay the miles and they cover if it needs towed or ANY maintenance expense and rent a trailer ....that way you can dip your toes into it to see if you even like it. Hope this helps

    Just was introduce to this line of work my in-law.
    Not sure how to get started but I like the flexibility.
    Thinking of getting a Nissan Titan to start.
    But before I jump into this I want to make sure it is the right thing for me.
    Should I pursue a CDL?
    I will continue to do research and see if this is the right thing for me..
    Currently, I have been working as a Software Engineer just now dealing with lay-off.
    don't want to go through this again without having my own business..

    3 years with CDLs. I am 29. Im looking at getting my hands on 3500 gmc or chevy but not limited to it. I have a only a 1500 silverado 2015 paid and a small 9ft trailer. I probably could do small jobs but I am used to 53ft trailers drove to Total Transportation. Wouldn't mind a goose neck. Anyways. Ill tread the waters with a leasing companh i suppose. But id like more info on starting my own independent company.

    Please explain for a rookie. In the beginning of the video you said a non CDL can pull a load under 10,000 pounds. Is that including the trailer or is that weight only? I'm confused about the GVW rating and trailer rating, and what the maximum combined weight can be (truck+trailer+load) allowed for a non-CDL. Is there a limit on the length of the trailer for a non CDL? Planning to get a CDL license in the future, but for now wanting to do this as a supplemental income and a learning period.

  • @Agwings1960
    @Agwings1960 6 років тому

    You add the GVW (Gross Vehicle weight) of the truck and trailer, if it's over 26,000 pounds, a CDL is required, but every state is a little different.

    Best way to get into this is hire on as a driver for an established company. Their, you will see what loads pay, fuel cost, insurance and maintenance cost. CDL loads usually pay better sometimes. This is hard work, you have to know your costs and profits. This is not for everyone. At times you maybe away from family or stuck somewhere and can’t find a load. Do a lot of research before you go out and spend all this money and come to find out this isn’t for you. Owner/operators need to have some good cushion of cash put away for truck/trailer emergencies. And only for that! Also cash for operating expenses. Fuel, food, PMs etc.

      A solid career for hot shotting. I would recommend Landstar. Around $400 for insurance. Around 40 cents off diesel at TA and petro. If you are gonna use a pickup I would recommend a Dodge Ram 5500 or something equivalent to it or better. Have atleast $15,000 sitting aside for break downs/down time, the more the better. 40 ft gooseneck trailer with 15k axles. If i would choose between a semi and hot shot I'd choose semi. They usually last longer, not always but usually. You will need a tanker and hazmat endorsement for landstar. Hope that helps. I friend Driving for them said to expect $2k-$4k per week gross to the truck, thats before expenses. He's getting out of his pickup back into a semi.

I’ve got a duramax that I would sell and could have a good start up amount but I am so damn confused due to all the mixed reviews. I hope it all works out for you guys. I don't know anything about the CDL B but I'm pretty sure that if your weight is over 26,001 you need a CDL A, There are non-CDL drivers and loads out there, (trailer and load {I've heard} has to be below 10K) but it makes it harder to find that specific of a load. Good video and I have done a bit of research, but stuck on certain issues and concerns.
    Diesel or gas? I see the hot shots are about 50/50, and then automatic or manual?
    I’m looking at a F550 or a f750 , do you need 4x4? Looks like some companies prefer, but is it needed?
    Air ride on truck and trailer?
    I’ve looked into 2 trailers one at P.J. that is a 40 ft goose neck with wood floor and another one at ship trailers that is 53 ft with air ride . One is more for rv work and other is a hail all type
    Have you been close to being over loaded?
    Would a tag axle on a truck help? Or on trailer?
    I guess this is my start of questions. I do have more though.
    Thanks

    • @TruckandTravel
      @TruckandTravel  6 років тому

      It's a personal preference for the diesel or gas and automatic or manual. We've used our 4x4 at times. Again it's a personal preference. Air ride on trailers are required by some loads so if you got it that would open more load opportunities for you. Not a bunch of loads but some. Air ride on truck makes the ride nicer if you can afford it but again it's a personal preference. Not sure what a tag axle is sorry. We registered our plates to be at 42K I believe to make sure if we go over we are ok on the weight scales. I don't believe we've been overloaded but we know of some others who have been.

Whether it's having your own authority or working under someone else's authority, even if you are non-CDL you have to be compliant with log books too. How did you get your CDL, what were the costs associated with it and how long did it take?? Thanks D

    • @TruckandTravel
      @TruckandTravel  6 років тому +1

      I'll tell you that it will be different between different states and different BMVs that you take it from. The first part of getting your CDL is taking the written parts of the test on the computer which doesn't cost anything and if you fail, you can try again the next day. For the driving/pretrip test, Ours was around $53 each time we took the test. We both failed the first time but since there are 3 parts to the test, if you pass the 1st but fail the 2nd you can't do the 3rd part but when you pay to do it again you won't have to take the 1st part again or pay for it. Does that make sense? Darrick passed the pretrip the 1st time and I didn't 😬 The guy swears I didn't say stuff that I did but we won't get into that. So that was $53 each then I had to pay $53 for the next time but his was like $40 I think. Like I said every state is different. In Ohio we had to wait (I think) a week to take the driving test. When we didn't pass the first time, we had to wait a week before we could try again for the driving part. The actually licenses cost us $42.50 If you are going to do the CDL depending on what time of year and how busy it is everywhere had a month waiting just to take it but we found one that we could take it I think 2 weeks after the written. The expensive part comes with having to put apportioned plates on the truck> We had a prorated amount since it wasn't going to be a full year and also we put ours for 42K just in case a shipper over loaded us. Ours was $632.16 but then again it could be different with the state and other factors. These are the costs off the top of my head. There may be others I'm not remembering now but I Hope this helps!

      Hey David! There is way too much information for me to answer this in 1 response. There are a lot of decisions you need to make first: do you want to run under someone else's authority (DOT#s) or start your own authority, Do you want to be a CDL or non-CDL driver, etc. You also have to see if the cost of getting started is reasonable: do you have your own truck? Do you want to buy or rent your own trailers? Do you have any experience? You'll need to watch more videos and do some research on your own first to get to know more of the industry first bud! After you do and have some specific questions, ask away 😊 It's definitely not something you want to just jump into

    Ive been thinking about this for a long time. Im a cdl-a driver with 2m miles and 16 years experience in semis. What are some things you think I shoukd look into ornbe aware of in terms of hot shotting?

    • @TruckandTravel
      @TruckandTravel  6 років тому +2

      We've heard a lot of different things. We've talked to drivers who like it better than semi driving because of the MPG and maintenance costs BUT there are definitely things to consider. The amount of loads when comparing the 2 is WAY leaning towards a semi drivers' favor! There are far more loads out there for semi drivers and the loads that are out there for hotshots are sometimes a good rate and sometimes a bad rate because the broker will consider it a partial but on a hotshot setup it could take up the whole trailer or the whole weight limit making it a full for the hotshot. I would say the room inside the truck is smaller but it's not a problem if you are by yourself (this is where we have difficulty being a couple). So in short: hotshot is good for lower maintenance costs (like tires 😱), but less load availability. Hope that helps

  • @adamholbrook2281

    Do you guys have any experience with lightweight loads. Maybe it's more along the lines of a courier and what kind of rules and or requirements exist for that? Is there a need or does that sour of thing just get subbed out to courier serives or an uber driver?

    • @TruckandTravel
      @TruckandTravel  6 років тому

      We do take lighter loads as well. Those people usually use a hotshot for especially if it is longer and they need a flatbed to haul it. If the weight of your trailer and the load are under 10,000 pounds, we've been told you do not need your CDL. I think this is what you are asking. Hope that helps!

It sounds like you have a great job right now. If there is a 401K I wouldn't switch. Like I said though it's completely up to you and everyone has a different situation. @mitchwolf5038 5 років тому +1

      Truck and Travel The easiest way to assure you pass the tests the first time is purchase the tests and answers. These are sold on the internet and are separated depending on which state you live. These are almost exactly the same questions that are asked on the tests so when you see them you already know the answers. I studied for about three weeks and passed everything in one try including the tanker endorsement. I then went to a trucking school and bought ten hours. It included the truck and trailer and instructor. The main things we worked oh we’re all the different maneuvers that the state instructor was going to ask me to do. The school arranged the state guy to be there one day and I passed it easily. Once got it never let it expire. You will have to do it all again. And that will take you off the lists for brokers to hire ya.

Check your local Craigslist for local companies hiring hot shots. Hope that helped!

    I’ve been thinking of starting a hotshot business for over a year now. How do you locate a hotshot company that will let you sign on to them? I live in Colorado and have talked to numerous hotshoters and none of the ones I have talked to say they are leased on with anyone. Mostly they are all hauling cars. Thanks for the videos, any info would be great!

    I own a business now where I work from my home. Based on your past experience the companies you have worked for, is this something I could do part time such as one load a week or less. For example, ramp up taking loads during my slow times. Penny for your thoughts.

      I don't know if I would recommend it with insurance costs and other maintenance and depreciation of the truck I guess it depends how much of a slow time you got. Check out our most recent video. We run down some numbers

      To be honest we are trying to be on social media answering things as much as possible. The easiest way is our FB business page messaging us on there but the fastest may be to catch us on our LIVES on Fridays
