I'd like to try these out and compare them to my vivobarefoot stealth and my vivobarefoot
Trail II...but hoesntly the look of Xeros doesn't compare to vivobarefoot, and the price isn't that big of a difference.
What would be the reason to switch?

I bought my first pair of Xeros (HFS) in August of 2020. At the time, I was recovering from a bad case of plantar fasciitis. For me, there was an adjustment period. At first, it was hard to walk in them for more than about 30 minutes without my feet feeling really tired. So I just wore them as much as I could and then switch to my regular shoes, or just sit down. Within 4-5 weeks, I was wearing them almost exclusively. My feet have felt so much better. Plantar fasciitis is gone. Before, I couldn't stand walking around barefooted. It was too painful. Now, it feels great. I've been running in Altras, but am about to start on the 24 week transition to barefoot running program.

Hi, I've been using Altra too. Recently I've bought a pair of Xero sandals. I've now just ordered a pair of Xero shoes (Prio). How would you compare Altra with Xero? Thank you.
PS I've used Vibram five fingers for a couple of years, and while I did like 'em, they're quite expensive and their outsole doesn't really last much, expecially compared to the Xero sandals.

In regards to the Huarache strap design, yes I have felt it's benefits definitively. Having done about 2000km in 2x pairs of Terraflex Trail Running shoes, towards the end of their life these external straps have broken becoming snagged on a rock or root. Immediately the shoe feels much looser and loafy. I've rerouted the shoe laces to be tied normally at the tongue, but the shoes still feel loose around the ankles. Personally I love the Huarache strap design and am glad the new models have it inbuilt, preventing them from snagging!

I have the Men's Mesa Trail. This shoe is pretty good. I've had them for about 8 months and no issues they're well made.
A few of the knobs on the bottom are worn or broken off but, that's to be expected after 8 months of use.

I got the black Prios a month ago. I like them very much. I go barefoot all the time and had no problem adjusting to them. I got them so I can feel the stones as I walk around the property so that I do not twist my ankle. My old tennis shoes have memory foam, arch support and a stiff rubber soil which now just don't feel right. I do not like my shoes to be tight so I can not comment about the Prios heal strap. I think the Prios looks good. My other alternatives I found that work for me are moccasins and water shoes for which the Prios looks better out in public and has a solid grip to most all surfaces. I normally use a USA size 9 and the Prios size 9 fits me well. The price I paid and the quality of the shoes are equitable. I usually can get several years out of a shoe and I think this shoe will succeed the test of time.

I had the very first Xero DIY kits. The ground feel and the durability of the sole was outstanding. The new slip ins Hemp shoes look perfect. My only gripe would be that their best running shoes are now well protected on the sides from debris and damage. If they fix that, I will order.

I bought the Terraflex in clearance a couple of months ago. Not the most flexible soles and not the best barefoot feeling, but good for hiking on a rough terrain or when you are transitioning to barefoot shoes. I use them a lot in daily life as well and find them very comfortable to wear. The toe box is wide enough for me.
A little disadvantage: I expected them to be a little warmer. They are good enough for Spring and Fall, but I didn't use them often Winter, my feet got cold really quickly.
There however is one huge disadvantage: those shoes get really slippery when it is wet! I can not feel the secure-gripping comfort (like said on the website) at all!! Even when walking through city: going downhill on the pavement or on the many cobblestones feels very uncomfortable and tricky. And that is quite a pity, as I am living in the northern part of Germany and we have quite some rain here.
So sadly enough, I won't be using these pair of shoes on my hiking adventures nor taking them with me for Summer vacation. I will just use them as an every day comfortable shoe, as long as the weather is good.

Standardization in sizing is one thing, but ignoring the great variations beyond foot length and toe width is a huge problem.
Foot curvature (looking at the horizontal plane from above) is not standard in people. Nor is heel width which cannot be fixed with insoles.
It would be awesome if these newer companies would truely innovate. Forefoot and backfoot should be sized differently and should be prioritized with length/curvature as a third factor. This shouldn't be that hard to do especially with how much they are charging for the shoes.

I have numerous pairs of Xero Shoes. I originally bought them several years ago to relieve back pain caused when wearing heeled shoes. That said, although they served that purpose well, I find them generally too narrow to allow my toes to move freely. While not painfully uncomfortable, I find that they miss the mark when it comes to having a sufficiently wide toe box. Also, the insoles on many of the models slide out while being worn. I contacted Xero Shoes about this and was told to either glue or tape them in or remove them, neither seems like a reasonable solution to what appears to be a design or manufacturing flaw. In any event, since I have invested so heavily in them, I continue to wear them to this day, even after my back issues had been surgically resolved.

I just wanted to say, whoever says comfortable shoes support your feet to well to where they weaken, its not true. Get balance 1080s, they're 180$ but they'll help fix your balance and walk over time. It help me alot, my walk went from stomping, toes pointed out, not using my arch properly to push off, and somewhat rocking back and forth with a right leg limp. Sounds like alot but it was mild since I'm young, but the balance 1080s fixed my walk completely.

When they had their spring, I guess it was sale here in the US I picked up the trail shoes which I liked they’re good very light everything but then I picked up a pair of sandals, aqua clouds. These are my favorite running shoes for our roads. I love them it’s like gum I think 3 mm of rubber and a top it out is maybe another 3 mm of like a foam that your feet just sit on something comfortable but soon as you step on that phone, you know disappears so you’re really running on about 3 to 4 Millimeters and they’re just great and I paid I think $16 for it so pretty good but I think normally there may be 50 they’re actually the only problem is if so then that everyone’s wild if you’re not careful the front of the sandal can actually flip underneath you, so I wouldn’t wear them on the trails but that’s itI said I love them. Yeah I love them.

The heel still looks way too wide for me which is the biggest issue I encounter with shoes. I ask for narrow and it only gets worse because that just means sqeezed toes. Occasionally I find a woman's size that works ok for me (a man), but I think there is so much trendy desire for easy-on easy-off that my problem may never be resolved.

Would you recommend Xero shoes or barefoot shoes for people who need arch support?

    • @barefootstrength
      @barefootstrength  3 роки тому +8

Arch support is an artificial way of supporting the natural foot arch. While these tools can help some individuals in extreme cases, they are utilised too often.
Unless one’s foot is deformed, is giving a lot of pain or has an arthritic condition that is too far progressed, there are better ways to improve foot function. The careful use of foot exercises and barefoot shoes are some of these methods.

I won SO many 5& 10k races off this training regime, & when donning spikes found sub-5 miles doable-mostly because of my bullet proof feet. Unfortunately, that's all changed!
Fast forward: inhospitable to runners: Houston ,Texas the veritable concrete jungle.
Grass here is very sharp & spiky---barefoot is as yet undiscovered for me.
Recently,I decided to start doing 2 sessions per day barefoot on my treadmill in a bid to seriously toughen up my soles & transition back to my days of barefoot happiness!
I used to he able to run barefoot on barkdust & even won a 5K Seaside, Oregon running barefoot on the sand ( ouch!)
So,it seems inevitable to buy shoes like these to try & circumnavigate this crazy city.
My question relates to volume durability.
I've been running 12k a day for years w fast track work, tons of hills & threshold runs.

Update-----I've discovered that so called " barefoot shoes " is an oxymoron @ best.
Shoes in general are absolutely NON-ESSENTIAL -mankind has been running barefoot for 2+ million years, only since 1970's have we been told (& brainwashed) to believe all of a sudden we " NEED" shoes. Seriously?
It's all a a big lie & a myth as Christopher MacDougall found out( Born to Run book) searching all the scientific evidence--not 1 corroborate or substantiate that shoes reduce injury---its actually 180 degrees different. 80% of shod runners get injuries every year despite super expensive technologically manipulated shoes -----ALL hyper-marketed to the numb minded folks unwilling to discover the actual REALITY!
Xero shoes or any other " barefoot shoes"--they are all super hyped & marketed -----to lighten your wallet & keep you from reconnecting w Mother Earth & Nature as we're all intended to.REAL BAREFOOT!!!
I run twice a run( app. 12k) & I can't even remember what wearing or running in shoes is like. It's a distance memory......
Bulletproof feet = super strong feet = running fast = winning!
It's yr own life make yr own choice. I guarantee you'll be 1000% happier w/o ANY shoes.

Not that I'm aware of. However, Xero does ship to SA. You'll just have to find out about import duties. Not sure what the tariffs are in SA on footwear?

@@barefootstrength Thanks I was just wondering. I have already ordered a pair of sandals from them. I think I paid 25% import duties on the purchase price. This with the shipping fees really brings the cost up.

If you're looking for a shoe with nice wide toebox and zero drop, try Altra Superiors. The Athlete's Foot in Cape Town stock then, as do a lot of serious running shops eg the Durban Runner. Not a "proper" barefoot shoe though. I have a pair of lone peaks and they are the best shoes I've ever owned...

Never heard of those shoes but I looked up the groundies, they look better because they're casual sneakers not running shoes. Most running shoes aren't too good looking, and I've found those that are are often not very durable and show wear faster.

Looked as much as I could on their website, xero mention of it. Usually a company will have some information about the companies initiatives to combat climate change and pollution or mention the eco-friendly materials used on the shoe's page but they do neither... NOT a good look. Hard pass!

They're vegan friendly materials. And with the 5,000 mile sole warranty, they should at least hold up long enough to where they're not causing as much pollution from being throw away. Not sure if that's what you're looking for, but maybe it's something.

In my opinion, xero shoes are like wrestling shoes- which is what, back in the 70s, I wore for a more natural shoe. Last year I bought 2 pair of xeros and can say they sadly are made in china, and fall apart rather quickly. In addition, the toe area is too small to be a true barefoot shoe. So, I am sticking with soft star. Their shoes are made in the USA and last alot longer. (except for their all leather moccasins. the soles wear out after a year on those, but they are nice).
