Agreed, higher fines, lockouts and towing. Bigger fines for companies, especially delivery companies (and the drivers), that think they can take advantage of the spots.

Take pictures of the license plate, time index and location. Bring in the pictures to your bylaw parking officers. Well documented infractions are usually followed through.

This seriously annoys me as well. I have the handicapped placard for my vehicle and lots of times there are vehicles parked there and I have to be dropped off at the door while my husband goes to find a parking spot way out at the outer edges of the parking lot or if I am driving I end up not being able to go into the store because I can't park close enough in order to get to the door safely. I firmly believe the fine for illegal parkers in handicapped spots should be raised to a minimum of $1000 fine to deter them from parking there.

Parking lot owners need to make sure handicap parking is clearly marked. Sometimes its an accident.
    0:37
That paint would be barely visible at night or heavy rain.
    0:48
It looks like they mistook the lines that should have been completely removed for a parking spot.

All handicapped parking spots in Canada that I have ever seen also have very clear signs posted above them. The same goes for the mothers with babies or pregnant women parking spots. All of them have highly visible signs. There is no excuse for taking those spots if you aren't entitled to them.

@@raymond289 I agree 110% the road rage, the brake checking and just the outright ignorance and self entitlement of the gen Y drivers keeps reminding me of why I believe there should be special camps in the Yukon for them to all reside. I sit here in my house watching the new drivers literally play smash up derby with the vehicles in front and behind them because they feel those vehicles are parked too close to them for them to exit their parking spots. I'm waiting for the day they try that with my pickup truck and they will discover not all drivers will just allow them to damage whatever vehicles they want for no reason. It will be Dodge Ram FTW day!

Because heaven forbid he might have to walk a little bit and people wont see his jacked up 4 wheel drive if its parked further back from the storefront...

I agree with this. My issue is also when snow season hits. In Northern California where it snows in the Sierras, the plows dump large piles of snow in front of freshly cleared vehicles with handicapped plates. This will take all day for someone to remove that snow and a handicapped person could be late for or have to cancel a medical appointment. On many ocassions, I would dig out our car to get my husband to dialysis. The only thing I could do was skip breakfast and guard our car until it was time to leave. What do you people do in this case?

Increasing the fine from $100 (or less) to $400 won't do a thing. The solution needs to be more than a monetary fine. Here are some ideas.
    1. Immediately impound the violator's vehicle for 30 days.
    2. Require the violator to appear before a judge. No paying of a fine in the mail. They need to get read the riot act (so to speak) by a judge.
    3. Perhaps even make this sort of violation into a minor criminal offense, where there's a jail sentence. Or perhaps a significant period of community service.
The idea here is to make violating handicapped parking laws really hurt the offender, since it's clear that fines don't get the job done.

In part, this issue is because most city agencies do not do their job enforcing the laws protecting the disabled, no priority is assigned to correct or enforce the law. Large fines, towing, these actions can make money to pay for enforcement. If tickets were made payable when people get their car sticker, people would have no choice but to pay or no sticker, and another ticket and fine. It can be a real legitimate moneymaker for a city and protect the innocent.

You want to make an impact... give them community service of driving around disabled individuals for 100 hours.
Seriously money won't solve the problem. Making sit with people they are infringing upon is more likely to create real change

FINES ARE NOT ENOUGH!!! Until people who do NOT CARE actually FEEL THE BURN from their wrong doing, they will NOT stop! People have money & those with enough of it, will never care! 4 or more points on their Driver's license may help! Multiple offenses should result in suspended Driver's licenses! THAT will only help! More DRASTIC punishments are needed to get people to stop & only some at that! The real problem is getting people TO ACTUALLY CARE about others! Many people with legal placards or handicap license plates, like I have, park however they wish! ANYONE who is allowed to have these placards or handicap license plates NEED to be educated about how to park properly & what those "HASH MARK AREAS" ARE REALLY FOR! Not for parking, store scooters, shopping carts, or ANYTHING OTHER than WHEELCHAIR ACCESS! They ALSO NEED to enforce the "VAN ACCESSIBLE" spaces for VANS ONLY! Too many people WITHOUT wheelchair vans take those spaces! They are SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED for "WHEELCHAIR VANS" allowing plenty of space for our wheelchair ramps & lifts! Again, our 1st goal is to get people TO ACTUALLY CARE! Thank You to those who help enforce ACCESSIBLE PARKING! We greatly appreciate your efforts as you are the DEFENDERS OF OUR FREEDOM, allowing US to come & go as WE PLEASE, just like regular people get to do!!!

I know this is Canada so things may be different than in America, but in America they often have 10 handicap spaces in front of the store and most of them are open and then there is nothing available in the regular ares. They have way too many handi. I owned a insurance agency before and I was mandated to have a handicapped space even though I had a tiny lot of 5 parking spaces. It was my own private property and after hours or on the weekends when my business was closed and I was there alone working I would often park in the handicapped space either because I was unloading stuff or because it was late at night I wanted to be able to come out and get right in the car and not get robbed walking any further in the lot. I would have people trying to beat the door down at off hours to yell at me and say how dare you park in a handicapped space. I would tell them this is my private property and it's 8pm. I closed at 5! They would threaten to call the cops and then I would tell them to F*** off and go ahead. LOL! It's one thing to follow municipal laws on public streets or government buildings but in a private parking lot in the suburbs with no other businesses around you are not going to tell me where to park.

So by your logic handicapped people don't come out after 5 pm when you close and even if they do too bad they can't use your "privately owned" handicapped spots. How very gracious of you to even offer to give them a spot during operating hours.

As a handicap person myself you're right after hours there should be no need for that to be reserved for a handicap person as they don't need to access your business. As to seeing them open and unused sometimes..so what? Handicap people can't travel very far (usually) and the number of stalls are based on the amount of people accessing the building. If someone who is abled bodied has to wait for a stall or park farther away....tough. Try living with a cane or wheelchair for the rest of your life. Those in convinces that able bodied people have is something disabled people dream of having again. I would love to be able to park at the back of a parking lot and walk into a store again like it was nothing.

Get rid of disabled parking spots. Just give them free parking. Stop giving out fines and start giving free perks to disabled parking permit holders. Less frustrating, less conflicts. The guy shot outside a convenience store in Florida, over a disabled parking spot, as an example.

@@wendyzcafe868 ... in B.C. for example... all crimes are downgraded as much as possible so as to create a false sense of safety and security. This increases tourism and boosts the economy. Way more crimes than we know about, thus silencing the victims is necessary. That's why the police track victims rather than convicted criminals. Most criminals get their records expunged after a few short years. Victims are forced and brainwashed to "tolerate" criminals rather than avoid danger.

You understand that disabled spaces are larger than regular spaces for a reason? That they are closer to the building for a reason? I need extra space to unload my chair. Someone with a ramp needs more space. Someone who uses a cane or crutches can't walk as far. If I have to park further away it's incredibly dangerous to get through a parking lot, I'm much lower and can't be seen by cars backing up. He'll even when thy are going forwards, people don't look down to see us. We need the larger, close spots to be able to access places, this is a civil rights issue. No spots = no access for many of us.
