All really useful. Genuine thanks. Sorry but just one minor error - you repeat the myth that you can only use carbon steel to strike a ferro rod. Actually both carbon steel and stainless can be used for this (or even a shard of glass if that's all you've got). The myth comes from confusion between two methods - using a ferro rod and using a flint and steel to create sparks- If you are using the flint and steel method then that's where only carbon steel can be used. Not looking to nit pick just trying to help any newbies out.
I've used a cheap pocket knife with my Ferro rod and that was like stainless steel.
Thank you
I agree. I had my in- laws use a ferro rod on vacation last year and the girls were using rocks with a good edge to spark the ferro rod and start a fire. Carbon steel you need for the old fashioned "flint and steel". Thanks for sharing!
He always uses the word "firesteel" interchangeably between a hardened carbon steel striker, and a ferrocerium rod. It gets to me as well, thanks for pointing it out yet again. To me, a firesteel is a hardened striker meant to make a spark with a hard rock. Ferro rods are not steel.... I've be using and practicing with flint and steel since I was in grade school. So, ferro rods are super easy!
Right. It wasn't easy but he demonstrated that it would work
FYI - Ferro rods will spark with most any sharp edged tool, metal, ceramic, glass or flint. You do not need carbon steel to spark a ferro rod. Wow!
The single paint can opener makes a great shell extractor for the AR. I saw some people attaching them with cord to plate Carriers. Just a great little idea to pass along.
We used to call them a church key.....maybe that was for some other reason.....
I have kept a 5-in-1 tool in my tool box for decades. Great all around tool and essential when painting.
My grandpa used to sharpen the front of dull scrapers. He used them to open oysters. He said their flexibility was ideal for the task.
Another option is to use it to Jimmy open cheap door locks (not deadbolts). Slip the hook or the opposite side behind the catch and pull or push to move the latch
As a property maintenance supervisor, this tool is probably one the most versatile. Beside a 10 in screwdriver, it’s used almost everyday. When I have new hire techs it’s on the must have list.
I use one every day. Have many. Back in the day we named it the JT-23. We came up with 23 uses including self defense. Great video...
I've never seen a single video that you have made that was anything short of great. Thanks for teaching!
Thank you for such good info! It’s been to long since I’ve watched your show. I hope you and your family have a wonderful weekend and I bet your wife has a blast with you 💥 Take care 💙

Another great improv vid for the series. I really like this style of video, because it shows how almost anything you have can do more than you think it can.
Thinking out of the box for survival…gotta love it. I bless you ♥️
You don’t need carbon steel to strike a ferro rod (although you do with a true flint and steel). Even a shard of broken glass will strike sparks from a ferro rod.
Good to know!! Thanks for sharing!😊
Enjoyed this post. Will look for one
Some of my favorite videos on this channel.
Thanks for sharing this information.
A good video for such a cheap tool you can find anywhere. Sometimes used to open poorly fitted doors without looking like a tool for that purpose. I would not carry one to replace a knife, but often end up using my knife for jobs that a scrapper should be used.
Before I forget, I just want to say - what a cool topic!! I really appreciate you sharing this useful info!
Carpenter my whole life .I always kept the one you held up in the beginning ( Hyde) in my apron. Versitle for many things!
Wow, never thought of looking at those for multipurpose usefulness. Interesting, thanks.
Cabinet installer for 33yrs been one in my toolbox since day 1.
Excellent ideas. Thanks.
What a great idea
Thanx for the info!
I keep a painters tool in my Veto and use it more often than not. Never thought to put one in my go bags, but I now will 😉👍
great ideas thanks
Great demonstration
Thanks Gilbert!
This was a great video !! I love survival tips. They keep us alive .
Stay safe everyone
Thanks.
Great idea!
Another great tool for improvising when needed. I like the folding scraper by PURDY!.
I have a flexible blade putty knife in the kitchen. I rounded off the corners of the blade. One of my most used kitchen tools.
Great practical tool option that most folks probably already have.
Thanks
Wow very nice thank you 😊
Good stuff.
Thanks man! Good video!
Thanks Brother!
Fantastic information, thanks
Thanks for watching Ira!
I saw one of these lately and thought hmm, yes.
And here's a vid to help me 👍
Good info.
Sweet.
I just used one today to open up a painting frame for a puzzle I finished.
I used to take putty knives and make tomahawks outta them. Fun cheap little throwers that could get wicked sharp
Good video , thanks for sharing , God bless !
I use them for scraping grease off stuff at work. I have many different shapes I have made to get into nooks and crannies.
I'm a painter by trait and I have used my 5in1 or putty knife for many different things love my putty knife and never go anywhere without one
In a pinch u can drill some holes through it and use it as a hatchet head or debarking tool
Well I'll be darned. I never thunk it!
Thanks for the laughs 😃
Might be useful for jimmieing locks as well.
Great video! Never thought about painter's tools as multi tools. I got a bunch in my tool kit, but I may need to make some upgrades. By the way, what's that watch you're wearing? 3:08
I carry one of these as a window cleaner and I use it for so many things, every single day. I'd feel naked without it. Mine is super light because it has a skeletonized handle; I can't find them anywhere now.
I'm a painter by trade currently working doing specialty Concrete Coatings a painter's 5 in 1 can be an amazing tool depending what brand you get if you buy the Purdy 6in one it is a very sturdy tool and I have done a lot of work with them other than scraping and opening paint cans depending on the one you get it also has a Spike protruding off to the side as a bit of a can opener that we used to cut out the rims on 1-gallon cans so we can use them as cut pots we also use a doping cracks and stuff the five and one is an awesome tool and it's one that I'm going to keep with me as much as possible outside of work
Not sure if this will even be seen but I’m Just starting to prep. Now my wife looks at me like I’m crazy. Any tips on how to get her to understand? Do I think something major will happen in my lifetime??? A little but not a lot. But I would rather have it and not need it then the opposite. Also I look at it like if I don’t need it, it can be passed down to the kids. I do believe something will happen in their lifetime. It would make me feel much better knowing they are somewhat prepared. Any advice on how to get her onboard with prepping?
Good stuff. Thank you.
Bruh.....I've never seen scrapers like this... I must have!
Thanks Rubio!
Hahaha 5 and 1 have many many uses I paint houses for a living never leave home with out one 😂😂
Walmart has a hart one with a bit driver and 12 other tools in it
Stainless will strike a ferro rod like anything with a 90 degree spine, what it wont spark is flint/ churt. That's why survival experts recommend high carbon, even though very few people carry or have access to natural flint and churt stones
You have to have carbon steel if using with a flint or chert
With flint and steel the steel gives off the sparks But with a steel and faro rod the rod gives off the sparks. So with a faro rod my stainless steel knife work. But a high carbon steel you can use a hard sharp stone like flint or something else. A stainless steel knife is a good knife as a dive knife. And a faro rod is softer metal that is why it works.
The humble 5-in- 1
Also works for self defense
use these at work all the time and we are not painters lol
They are great for shucking oysters.
Sounds like an accident waiting to happen.
@@papimaximus95 you would be wrong.
@@mattc1602 Ok...say hi to the ER nurse for me.
@@papimaximus95 just been doing it for 20 years. No ER nurse yet. 😂
👍👏🏻🌟❗
HI 👋 BLESSINGS TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY, ANYWAY I'M INTERESTED IN BUYING SOME OF THOSE INCREDIBLE TOOL'S, HOW CAN I GET MY HAND'S ON THEM 😅😅😂 I'M A TOOL FANATIC EVEN THOUGH I'M A WOMAN AND I AM OF GOOD COURAGE, AMEN 🙏
Kinda like a swiss army knife.
If you don't have a knife, take a grinder or hacksaw & make it into a knife....
You forgot that you can use them to bypass certain types of locks.
Where is Dr. Jekyll?
Tip.. wear gloves so you don't rip your skin off while boring wood lol
You changed your lock and was open
You know your almost out of content ideas when you have to fall back on paint scrapers........ 🤣😂🤣😂
I would rather use a painters tool for anything other than painting
Not true stainless will strike a fire rod all my knives are stainless and I been making fires for 20 years with them
IDK, you can do just about anything with a chainsaw. 👍😁
Unless you don't have gas...
@@SensiblePrepper Ryobi makes an excellent battery-operated 40V chainsaw. I have the 14" and 18" models. I have been taking the 14" on camping trips - processes wood like a champ with the ease of the push of a button.
Survival paint scrapper? Good ideas for videos must be getting harder
Hey brother, could you do a video series on HOW to build an SHTF/Bug Out pick up truck?? Which brand/year is the most reliable, longest lasting, inexpensive? What to look for in the way of engines-gas, diesel, displacement, 4X, crew cab, shells, equipment such as winches, tire size, brand, composition, bumpers, EMP protection, etc.? I know a little about 4X Jeeps but almost ZERO when it comes to pick ups. I'd guess there're many who'd appreciate some guidance on this subject. Canadianprepper has a pretty intriguing build which is what got me thinking about this topic. Thanks for all you do!
I keep mine in my back pocket have all my life I own a caulking company make a great weapon allso
