Learning to play Warhammer 40k in a reasonable time is something that I never really cared about until I realised that time is precious and spending many hours over a game that could take an evening is silly. Or something, I dunno I have a justification here.
Mostly I just wanted to play a game where I tried out using a chess clock to see what it was like, and what kind of things you can learn from going fast. Learning how to play fast is a good skill anyway, but it also helps remove analysis paralysis which is a cause for slow games, at least for me. There's no point agonising over a decision if it's going to be a bad one anyway, so you might as well shoot from the hip and deal with the consequences so you can learn more, quicker.
Tournaments don't always require a chess clock, but they are on a strict deadline and chess clocks keep one player from hogging all the time. We played this very loosely, more as a guideline to keep us honest and not slowing down, and I still ended up with 8 minutes left after 5 rounds. Sure it was Screaming Ravens vs Grey Knights where the Grey Knights teleporting shenanigans meant some turns took less than 3 minutes but still. Fun game.
I won't talk about how the Nemesis Dread Knight had 1 health left because of a low rolled explosion from my Stormraven and a hit going through from a single Devastator Centurion that needed to literally just not roll a 1 for damage and, of course, rolled a 1, because my dice are cursed. I made other mistakes that the dice didn't cause.
I can still be salty about it though lmao.

battletech has basically 3 stages of rules
beginner box + a game of armored combat, all the standard rules, but none of the fancy stuff like called shots or lostech
total warfare + techmanual, standard tournament rules, same rules as before, but all the rest added in, such as non-mech units
advanced rules and advanced technologies, used for grand campaigns that also involve things like void fighters

My friends and I also did this for a bit (As most often you can tell who'll win with a pretty high likelihood at that point), but we started playing games out more and to be honest, I've often learned more about the game in the last 2 rounds than for entire games before. Simply because you often have to scrounge for any point or rely on units you usually don't rely on. Has led to some really interesting and informative experiences, funny moments and of course the occasional upset or very close game (where the result differed from what we expected earlier on).

Does none of friends play the index tau detachment that only activated AT ROUND 3??
Or Death Guard which start to fully embrace their army rule at round 3?

    • @theStamax
      @theStamax 3 місяці тому +1

@@Skitch213 think that's a bit harsh. Kauyon was absolutely one of the worst index detachment in 10th, but they ended up at least ok due to how cheap they got and how solid the datasheets are (still, of course it wasn't particularly fun to play).
With the Codex (with all its flaws like lack of detachments, having 2 dead on arrival, or no significant datasheet changes) we at least now have play when it actually matters (turns 2-3). Pretty sure T'au will be a hell of a lot more interesting to play with both Mont'ka and Retaliation cadre at least (and stronger to boot).
Also, Crisis how they worked in 10th index, had to go. That wasn't a healthy unit. I think they overdid it of course, the rules could have used more thought and there should have been at least some wargear options, but for both the health of the game and the Tau as a faction it's preferrable to how crisis worked previously.

    • @theStamax
      @theStamax 3 місяці тому +1

@@Karim-wd6ih that's sorta unrelated to what we are discussing.
Yes to Tau, it's the reason why Kauyon was widely considered to be one of the worst detachment rules. Especially if you go second you won't have your detachment rule during the most critical parts of a battle. That being said, with Tau later game play was pretty relevant up until the codex. You basically played a delay game, so you have to claw your way back on the latter turns. That being said, it was most often still pretty evident if that was possible to do by turn 3 (especially when going 2nd).
And death guard at least has an army rule all the time. They don't need to get to turn 3 to reach their full potential. If you are losing bad by turn 3, you'll likely end up losing the game regardless of whether or not you got a bit stronger.

One thing that helped me get a regular session of Warhammer in was using TableTop Simulator to just play whenever we both are online, that way the need to meet up wasnt there and we both were able to look up rules on our PCs.
And yes we used basic tabletop game pieces instead of actual models.

You've been doing a great job with these recent videos, Paul! I really liked the topic this time, since I have a tendency to play somewhat slowly while I think of the optimal order of plays or if I *really* want to bring that unit into charge range. So I've thought about bringing in the Chess Clock, and it's always been a terrifying thought to me. But knowing you didn't have many issues with it makes me think I could chess clock myself as well. Though I might want a cheat sheet so I'm not constantly checking my book/phone for rules.

A friend and I started playing onepagerules recently, and in our third game, with me looking up the rules on my phone, our 2k game lasted about 2 hours. Granted, that's probably more a 1500 points in 40k terms, but the game just rips along, and having only played 9th Ed 40k, I continue to not miss anything about 40k playing it.

I did my 6th game of 10th last week and we got to end of turn 4 in about 3 1/2 hours so definitely getting faster (and we then declared the winner there were so few units left we could basically predict the points scoring) and the game before we did a 1.5k game in a decent amount less than 3 hours, but we were playing marine vs marine so we knew each other's rules and datasheets a lot better. Honestly for me the thing that takes the longest is actually setting up the game, like putting the objectives down in the right spot, getting the deployment zones right and a decent terrain layout. That + getting the army out and finding the missions etc. can take 30-40 minutes before we even start moving any models.

I'm definitely still learning how to how speed up 40k games... Just played my 5th game yesterday and it took us a solid 6 hours of going as fast as we possibly could... granted, we both had armies we were unfamiliar with (it was his first with World Eaters and my first with Sisters), that time included set up, it was a 2.5k pt game, and it was one of those BEAUTIFUL down to the wire, all of the way to the last move turn 5 types of games... but still. I have utterly no clue how people have the brainpower to speed run 3 games in a single day with 3 hours per game. I want to get into the tourney space but holy hell I think I'd be mentally braindead by game 2...

When I teach, something I do quite often for new players to my filthy casual beer and pretzels group, I flat refuse to do full rules or more than 1000 points.
Game 1: 500 points with basic rolls, no bonus rules for factions/detachments/missions, play for kill points
Game 2: 1000 points with faction rules and classic 7th Ed primaries (Slay, First Blood, BEL), and core strategems
Game 3: 1000 points with everything including secondaries
I don't chess clock them but I find myself chess clocking myself mentally because I'm terrified of them getting bored.
One thing I always recommend for my new players to gain speed is to develop processes. Just like making a batch of cookies or your favorite dinner recipe if you follow the same steps every time you won't have to scramble for all the stuff when you need it.
I'm really proud one of my newer guys you beat me for the first time last month after a year of trying. By using his data cards as an order of operation guide he didn't miss rules and got his speed up. While this doesn't always work for tournament play I think it does help during the "seasoning" phase all new players go through.

I think the hours thing is correct, if you add “per player”.

Good luck."

Do you not schedule in your panic attacks? I make sure to keep them in my calendar and do them voluntarily so they don't interfere with my busy schedule

@@PaulIsBadAtStuff That sounds like a very good idea. I'll give it a try. "oooh sorry I can't thursday afternoon. I will be grapling with the fact that I'll never be good enough and overwhelmed by the expectations put on me 🤷‍♂️"

Want faster games simplify the game for yourself ie limit strategems to reroll only.
Give different game a shot like One Page Rules, same minis and in my opinion better more streamlined rules.

One thing I really like about One Page Rules is that it's designed, not only to be as simple as possible, but _fast._ It was created by a person with a life outside the wargame, FOR people who have lives outside the wargame. Faster games mean it's easier to fit a game into people's busy schedules. And each match isn't a huge slog.
Plus, it just FEELS faster. Both because of all the faffing around with rules you're NOT doing, and because it has Alternative Activations (so you're not waiting for your opponent to do their entire turn before you're allowed to play the wargame).
