    SHORT LHASA APSO DESCRIPTION:
    Lhasa Apsos are fairly small dogs, ranging in height from 9 to 11 inches and weigh from 13 to 18 pounds (six to eight kilograms). The coat is one of the distinguishing features of the Lhasa Apso-long and flowing, heavy and dense. On the face, the eyes may be hidden by a long fall of hair and there is a long beard as well. The muzzle is slightly shortened, leading to an undershot bite.
    In truth, the adult Lhasa Apso is one of the hardiest, toughest, and strongest-willed of all the small breeds. It is said that "when a Lhasa Apso looks in the mirror, he sees a lion." The AKC Standard calls the Lhasa Apso "chary with strangers." Chary means cautious or wary, and indeed he is. With his acute senses, keen observation skills, and distrust of anything new or different, Lhasas take their watchdog responsibilities seriously.
    Lhasa Apsos were first bred 2,000 years ago by Buddhist monks in and around Tibet. The monks believed that when the Lhasa’s owner died, if he was not ready for Nirvana his soul would be reincarnated in the dog’s body.
    SHORT SHIH TZU DESCRIPTION:
    Shih Tzus do not guard, hunt, or tunnel into the earth, although they may retrieve balls for you to throw again. They are bred to do one thing, and they do it well: They are companion dogs who give love to the world and soak it back in. They’re an in-your-lap kind of dog. They’ll bark to alert you that someone is at the door; once whoever it is comes inside, there's a good chance your dog will like the person as long as you do, because they are trusting creatures.
    Shih Tzu are covered in flowing long hair, including a tuft above the nose which provides its trademark “chrysanthemum” (i.e., floral) face. On a typical Shih Tzu, the rounded head has a long beard and moustache, a short muzzle and a black nose (except in reddish brown dogs which have a reddish-brown nose). Most Shih Tzu have round, dark, wide-set eyes with pendant (hanging) ears that are engulfed in hair.

    I have a little Lhasa I got from my sister and I love him. He has such a personality. And, their bark is ridiculous for such a tiny dog. One day the mailman came to my apartment door, and my Lhasa started barking. So, I picked him up and opened the door. The mailman asks where the other dog in the apartment is. I told him it was the dog I was holding that was barking. "Are you kidding me? I thought you had a pitbull or something! That bark came from that little guy?" He is EXTREMELY protective of the apartment. He's not an annoying barker, but he'll go off if anyone is out front or comes to the door. They're great alarm dogs, and I wouldn't want one biting my shin! My inside doorbell broke and I didn't even bother replacing it.

      Totally! They are the best protectors of all small dogs. Maybe Boston Terrier is good as well, but Lhasa Apso is on different level. I would love to see face of the mailman, when you opened the door 😂

      I had the same experience with my Bichon when my current boyfriend first came to the house a few years ago. He was expecting a bigger dog with that fierce bark until he saw my white 15 pound puffball dog 😹 He was a good watchdog too until he lost his hearing a year or so ago & passed just last month 💔

    I have two Shih Tzus and my neighbour has a Lhasa. When we walk them the difference is oddly clear. My dogs have wavy coats and sort of a puppy gait. The Lhasa has a straight coat, is taller and has a distinctive part straight down his back. He also has a more serious way about him, walking straight and head high. I find the breeds to be quite different! I loved this video!

      @@Rocadog definitely. The Lhasa is almost like a little guard dog. He is protective of his owner, and not overly friendly. Mine are bouncing, chasing, jumping, licking...and the Lhasa just patiently waits by his owner. It's almost like he's shaking his head at them. He isn't as affectionate with his owner as mine are either. He will often choose a spot away from us where he can see his owner, while my two brats do anything they can to get on a lap. He's a very, very beautiful animal, and he doesnt get very dirty or get his coat mussed. Meanwhile, my Shih Tzus are walking around with twigs in their coat, no matter how much we brush them! Basically, the Lhasa is a more dignified, protective dog and the Shih Tzus are friendly, puppy-like guys

Especially with my daughter he will not let another dog get to close to her. He was 5 yrs old when she was born. I guess they all have there own personality that's why we love'em do much♡!

    My LA loves going for walks multiple times a day, she keeps a sharp eye on her human family members so she knows where everyone is at. She barks at me for coming home late, loves car rides, rolling around on the grass (I know she is happy then), has a breathy huff, is the first to bark at another dog and doesn't like visitors making sudden movements like waving your arms wildly while talking. She will growl. She loves belly rubs and does not shed her coarse hair. She was a shelter rescue and am glad we got her because she rescued me too.

    We had a Lhasa Apso in our house for 27 years, one for 15 years & the 2nd lived for 12 years. They were both wonderful dogs. Yes, a little aloof but I liked that trait. They were both loyal, playful and loving. Both had coats that changed color as they matured. So, if that bothers you don't get a Lhasa. Also, both were females because all of the males we've met were more aggressive and less cooperative. They make great pets.

    I have a Lhasa and he is not suspicious of anyone. He loves all people especially children. He goes up to anyone and gives them a greeting and is curious about everything. Especially work men that come to house to fix things. He barks at the door but when the person is let in, he is extremely friendly. However, he dislikes other dogs. Won’t play with other dogs. He’s 12 years old and is very well behaved. I wish I could post a picture of him here. He is extremely loving and only wants to be around me. He follows me wherever I go and wants to be hugged and kissed frequently. He is very verbal not with barking but with huffing. He responds to my questions with his huffs and grunts. I do find that he sheds a bit but it’s more like when a persons hair falls out.

    Your description of Lhasa is accurate. One characteristic mine has that does not jive with your description: My Lhasa loves to hunt. He points at things when he smells them. Mice. Rabbits. Squirrels.
    I did not train him to do so. I do not discourage this instinct and do try to give him opportunity to scrounge around for mice in a vacant field by our house. Fun to watch him work!
    He is 7 years old. A wonderful dog

      @Rocadog  5 років тому +1

      Well the description is based mostly on breed standards and little bit on my personal experience (i am trying to be as objective as possible), but all the dogs still have unique personality, they are definitely all same.

    We had a lhasa apso until she passed a couple years ago. One thing that you didn't mention in this video is a lhasa apso's stubbornness. Ours was extremely intelligent, but all of that intelligence went into figuring out how to get the treat without doing what you told her to do. She was always trying to set the rules for everyone else. Another thing that I think could have done with mentioning is that while shih tzus can be good first-time dogs, lhasas really should not be recommended for that. They're more difficult to train properly because of that strong stubborn streak.

    The Shih Tzu can be literally any "dog" you want it to be (dependent upon the training you give him/ her and the personality you have--which transfers to the dog). We breed them and have a working farm. I've literally seen a Shih Tzu stare down a bull; forbidding him pass in a protective reaction towards my wife. Incredibly the bull turned around and crossed the creek in the opposite direction....that's the potential in these dogs. Simply put, in my experience as a former life-long "big dog" lover...my wife introduced me to the Shih Tzu...a BIG dog in a little body; they can be protective, adventurous, fearless or a lap dog...their outcome depends on YOU!

I have a 10 1/2 year old Shih Tzu who can be seen in the videos on my channel, especially my BarkBox videos. My experience with Lhasa Apso is that they are more often aggressive than friendly. The immediate physical differences are the flat face/short snout on the Shih Tzu and the long snout on the Lhasa Apso as well as the length of the legs.

    My lhasa apso sent me to the hospital this week. He nearly bit my eye out. We were cuddling, and he lunged at my face for no reason, no warning, no growl, no noise, it was nearly silent. While Googling, I discovered that the breed is known to confuse affection for attack, so it's not rare. I've had mostly big dogs for the past 20-some years. I've never had a dog with this temperament: wants to be snuggled, yet hates to be snuggled? He came to me. I didn't invade his space, I didn't lean toward him, HE came to ME, snuggled for 30 seconds and went nuts. I held him down for a few seconds so my other dog could run away, and I let him go. He was as scared afterward as I was. I told him to go in his kennel, and he did, but he stayed low to the ground, like he was afraid of ME. I was NOT very calm because I was covered in blood. I tried not to yell afterward, but I did scream when it happened. I was shaking and confused, I saw blood dripping like water, all over me. To say I was "calm" would be a lie. I think if I take him back to the shelter they'll put him to "sleep." He's not a bad dog, just... He's a PTSD dog. He was half his healthy weight when I got him. He had a torn ACL. He was terrified of women and kids. I've sunk so much money into this dog, and now this. Did I mention I live in the USA where hospital bills cost a fortune?

    I've raised four different Lhasa's and each had a very distinct personality. They must be socialized as a puppy or they will grow up wary of strangers, and very protective of their owners. Raising them around other dogs and cats also helps keep them friendlier and happy. Breeding right ( no close up relatives) will produce a loving lap dog that s not only highly intelligent, but avery trainable companion. On the whole they can usually out think a Shih Tzu. That said they are both great breeds to own!!

    I have a rescue Shih Tzu that that was not raised with guidelines (spoiled/run of the household, etc), then when his elderly owner died he was mistreated because the new caregiver didn't know how to handle his attitude. Fortunately for him, someone with knowledge intervened and started rehabilitation and we adopted him. He is very affectionate and loves to be with us and we love him. He is a challenge and also does have separation anxiety, which is about the only time he barks. If he had a better start in life, I think he would be a perfect pet. I would consider getting another one as a puppy. They require going to the groomer and cannot tolerate the cold.

    As a Lhasa Apso owner I can honestly say they are one of the most stubborn dog breeds out there! Mine hates water, loves snow, get aggressive when he doesn't get his way. He isn't a very good guard dog, my grandpa has been able to sneak into the house without my dog knowing until he's like getting ready to scare me. I've even managed to sneak into the house without him knowing. Also mine thinks he's a cat xD

      Not necessarily so. I had my Lhasa for 13 years until she recently passed away. I loved her like a child! From the very beginning she followed me everywhere and was always by my side. Roxy was possessive of her food and toys and she would bark (as they were trained to do) when someone came to the door but once in she would wag her tail and want to be loved. Roxy was always by my side and never left it until she passed away.

    My Shih tzu poodle mix Charlie charmed the entire neighborhood with his cuteness and sweet demeanor. He loved everyone with the exception of children and homeless looking people, both of whom he was wary and would keep his distance. He rarely barked but if at the house and someone came to the door he would bark a little. I don't think he had a mean bone in his body while awake but when he was dreaming all heck seamed to be breaking lose based on his twitching and barking, which he did with mouth closed. Too funny! He did require some work to keep his fur out of his eyes, butt, not matted but that's a labor of love. He was stubborn sometimes but that's cute, right? He was always so excited to see me and I spoiled him with whatever he wanted. I miss him dearly and recommend a shih tzu or shih tzu mix highly as a fun, sweet, loyal companion. I hope I will be blessed to own another shih tzu or shih tzu mix again someday

    I'm still not sure if my dog was Lhasa Apso or Shih Tzu. He looked just like a Lhasa, but had the personality of a Shih. He didn't like strangers at all, but he was as lazy and they come! It's quite possible he was a Shih/Apso and just had some Lhasa traits vice versa. I just lost him this past February from cancer, and my heart is still broken. 💔

    I have a Shih Tzu that came from a rescue. At least we were told he's a Shih Tzu. However, his muzzle is longer and face less fat that most Shitzhu's I've ever seen. He's also slightly bigger. And he's quite territorial. He doesn't like strangers coming into the house. Barks like mad and will be aggressive toward them. However, he's pretty friendly once I tell him they are OK. So, I'm inclined to think maybe he's actually a Llasa. The vet has never told us he's not a Shih Tzu however. Is there a genetic test to tell? I watched this video for some clues but still don't sure. I didn't understand the part about his coat parting.

    • @Rocadog
      @Rocadog  6 років тому +1

      Is your dog on your profile pic? Looks super cute! From what you said, its very possible, that you actually have Lhasa Apso. There are some genetic tests like EmbarkVet, but i never tried them, so i dont know, how reliable they are. And i dont know ho to explain you the coat thing more easily. If you can sea the dividing line on their coat, it is probably Lhasa Apso. Shih tzu does not have dividing line. And as i said in the video, Shih tzu coat is more wavier

    • @smon8497
      @smon8497 6 років тому +1

      I don't see a dividing line (only on his head...it falls naturally to either side). His fur tends toward curly when cut short. Maybe he's a mix of Llasa and Shitzu. I'm thinking about doing a genetic test.

    I love my Shih Tzu 4 month old puppy. He is kind, sweet natured affectionate, loyal, trusting loves people, kids, dogs. almost ever barks. Loves to play alone and with us. Follows us everywhere and contrary to the belief he is easy to train but can be stubborn. He loves food so when training food rewards work wonders. Non aggressive and not fearful. Does not suffer separation anxiety. He lays on our feet. If u give him your time and keep him mentally stimulated he is a lot less mouthy. He weighs 4 kg now. He is not overweight. My sister has a Shih Tzu he is 4 yrs old and he weighs 10 kg. he is large for the breed. The reason we chose to have a Shih tzu was cos my my sister's dog. My puppy was the largest in the litter. I think he will be larger then average when fully grown. If u want a companion dog only i really recommend a Shih Tzu. He will not be a gourd dog or get attached to one member of the family more then the rest. But if u want a happy Shih Tzu u have to have time for him. They give so much affection back in return.

    I have both apparently. I always thought Lilly was slightly different with a bigger body and that almost perfect part in her head fur. Dixie is smaller and her bark isn't throaty like Lilly's but both are rescue dogs and I got lilly after she already went blind. What's crazy is their mannerisms are almost identical with play and sleep habits and stance. But lilly clings to me where dixie plays with whoever I always just attributed it to Lilly's blindness but her being a sentinel also makes sense.

    I would not say Lhasa Apso lacks hunting instinct. My LA loves chasing birds and rabbits if he is allowed to. He has never caught anything though, luckily.

    They are very different in trmpermeny. Shih-tzu are much easier going and more fsmily oriented. Lhaso Apso tend to be a 1 person dog, they trnd to not be good with kids and can be very protective of thrir chosen owner.

    • @Rocadog
      @Rocadog  6 років тому +1

      Yes i agree, just like i said in the video: "Shih Tzu is friendly and trusting towards everyone. Lhasa Apso is more independent and they are suspicious towards strangers. Lhasa Apso can be decribed as watchdog, guard or protector, while Shih Tzu is typical companion dog."

      I have Cocker Spaniel mutt from shelter and now i have Labrador puppy for one year. I train him to be future assistance guide dog for blind people. I make a lot of video about my Labrador puppy, if you want, you can watch them on my channel :)

      Wow, you are amazing!! Do you speak any other languages? All of my dogs have been rescues. I grew up with one border collie and four German Shepherds. I adopted a Shih-Tzu and (I think) a Maltese Terrier and (I think) a mini English Pointer. To be honest I'm not sure what their breeds are. Lol!

      Thank you :) I live in Czech republic so i am native Czech speaker, but i decided to make videos in english. I always support rescuing over buying. I grew up with dogs as well, its the best, it teached me so much. For me, it does not matter what breed my dog is, my cocker spaniel from shelter is mixed with something too :D Its great from you, that you adopted three dogs already :)

      there are more people that have shih tzu lhasa apso mix, its not that uncommon. What are her Shih tzu traits?

    • @TheAllyIs
      @TheAllyIs 6 років тому

      the shih tzu is more in her appearance than anything. Her coat and color are a lot like a shih tzu. Many of her features are that of a shih tzu.

    Some breeders mix the 2 breeds so you get something in between, like a shih tzu with a longer snout I breed shih tzu so I can tell the difference, the shih tzu should have a high set nose, between it's eyes not a nose that is lower then the eyes

    My lhasa apso is the sweetest laziest dog ever. Very independent yet still loving. I think he barked 3 times in the 21 years I've had him. Hes really weak now and can't walk well but otherwise still healthy. He loves car rides but wont sit in the front with me. He prefers riding in the back on top of the seats.
