Flat or Roundwound? That would be really helpful Jamie. Nearly every jazzer will say you must use flatwounds. I would love to hear an in depth video to hear the difference between flats and rounds while you play the same jazz pieces and solos.

Thank you . I have been looking for these advice for years. Turn out thing that shape most of the tone is really cheap. Pick, picking technique, strings , amp setting, volume -tone position. This really get me to start at the right place.

I got a new Jasmine S35 Dreadnaught Guitar & I restrung it w/ John Pearse #2600 Strings so that I could get a pretty epic Jazz tone. The Sound I got falls in between a Flattop & an Archtop Guitar.
Flat wound 12' strings are great. Although low and deep really very good.Great video thanks.

Excellent advice! I think its all about touch - we used to spend hours and hours developing good tone with fingers on the classical guitar. A different beast but it also marks the difference between good and great players.

On the volume and tone control issue, there are multiple components. I’m running a nice archtop thru a Boss Katana 50 MkII. Some have claimed this inexpensive amp produces a sound too thin for jazz. But it’s actually great for jazz! The key here is volume. There are three relevant controls: channel Gain, channel Volume, and amp Master (volume). I run the channel Volume at 75% or higher. This fattens up the tone considerably. The Master should then be run about 50% or higher, depending on context. From there, adjust overall volume with the Gain knob. That knob should never go above 30% or thereabouts if you desire a clean sound.

I always thought it's the way we play that may or may not sound "jazz".. But of coursea very bright tone wouldn't have as much jazzy vibe.

I play classical -can I get away with fingers? Everytime I play with mates just pop/rock jams I still fund myself getting rid of plectrums
and worse 😏 I don't have nails. But I feel I can 'feel' the strings and shape the tone...

Excellent advice and useful tips - thanks Jamie. Beautiful tone too. Personally, as a solid body guitar player, how to achieve a jazz tone with say a telecaster would have been a nice contrast.
Rolling off, turning down the treble of a Telecaster works pretty well. I know of jazz players that have used Fender Esquire guitars, which only have the bridge pickups, to play jazz, and taking off the treble on their amps was how they did it.

Pickup height can make a huge difference as well. Also using the shoulder of the pick or a pick that's less pointy.

I use an old Gibson 125, no cut away (Charlie Christian type). I have seen that you use a similar guitar yourself, so you might be aware of this problem. From the 11th frets upwards, the notes can sound slightly out of tune. I know that this problem comes from the position of the bridge, (not fixed to the body), which needs to be positioned very accurately on the guitar body to avoid that problem. I have had difficulties to fix the problem. Any tip? Have you heard this before?
Hey I've never had that problem. As you said the bridge is probably the biggest factor. Hard to say without seeing and playing it! They are great guitars so I hope you get yours in tune!

Thanks for your advice to put the amp at full volume and set the tone and volume at 7. Talking about plectrums, I kept dropping it so for years now, I have been using my fingers with satisfying results. In the end, the thing is to develop your own sound. @@jamieholroydguitar

Chrome, nickel or nickel plated strings will have a warmer tone than steel strings 🎸🔊👍
Actually, pure nickel strings have a purer tone than nickel-plated strings, and that is why the early jazz players used pure nickel strings.
I just went to pure nickel on a les paul type guitar and it is getting very jazzy. Def what i was looking for
Do your AMP settings have anything to do with this sound?
Depends on the amp and room but they can make a small difference
Midrange is where the sweet sound is. A slight boost to midrange and a slight back off of highs can help. You just don't want to go extreme with it unless you have a REALLY bright amp. Lows are kind in the middle. You don't want it too boomy but you do want them full. For instance, (this is ONLY an example, every amp is different) Bass could be 5 out of 10, mids 7, and highs 3.5.
