I think that the whole similarity is just 2 stories following all the famous "troupes" of the time. Actually the inspired books based on Lord of the Ring are Song of Ice and Fire in short Game of Thrones ,Harry Potter and a little bit of Chronicles of Narnia , that's what I think. And originally Lord of the Rings is very much itself inspired from Norse mythology ,yeah the same Norse mythology of Thor ,Odin and Loki which has Gaints ,Elevs,Dwarfs and dark Elevs concept.
Lord of the Rings can be called the Godfather of fantasy genre. Tolkein did fantastic job, getting inspiration from ww2 and norse mythology and created something legendary.
