👵There are five stages of grief. Denial. Anger. Bargaining. Depression and acceptance. I know because I have lost two children. The last stage in this song is to comfort the acceptance. Sometimes also I am this song. I love 💘 your reactions and I have subscribed.

This song is one of the most emotional songs I have ever heard! I get tears rolling down my cheeks every time I listen to this song!
But as someone who dealt with depression and tried to get rid of the pain with alcohol.... I feel that Tuomas captured the essence of the guilt and depression he experienced! I got help and have been sober now for 22 years...

Tuomas wrote indeed the lyrics in a for him terrible time, but he was so precise that after the spoken words 3 minutes and counting it is exactely 3 minutes when you see him slash his throat and commit suïcide in the song. Lucky for us that he didn't do it for real, so we can still enjoy his great musicianship. Thx for your reaction. Well done

Great that you did your homework before diving into this Masterpiece. It's not, by any means, obligatory, but it helps to understand the meaning. I'm a big bulky guy, but still the "Be still my son, you're home. Oh when did you become so cold" gets me 😭 every time. And by the way, Floor didn't have the tattoos yet at Wacken 2013. Well done, Dasha! 🌞😎👍

It was so nice to see your reaction to this song. About 5 months ago I explained to my wife how this song and performance changed my life. I had lived my past 10 years like a ´whore for the cold world`. I found it hard to see beauty in this world after long term illness. I have found a better way... The first time I seen Ghost love score and cried for the first time in 10 years. I had never witnessed/heard such beauty in my life. Afterwards I seen this and I feel this was like a cure and let go of the past. I have lived a very different life in the past 6 months after discovering Nightwish. Floor´s voice can heal the most broken person and I am proof of that. She makes me feel again. Forever grateful :)

    Nightwish Army Denmark 🇩🇰 here,
Great and honest reaction from you 👍 - and we all gets hit on our soul and mind, by this masterpiece of a song.
And yes - Floor got her tattoos from 2014, after the Wacken 2013 concert - and this is from 2015, Wembley.
And you are spot on, on Floor's incredible versatility, she can switch technique, tone, color and everything she wants - even on the same breath and sentence!!!
Nobody else can do this song justice - but that's the result of Floor joining Nightwish - everything suddenly became possible. Tuomas is a genuine genius in composing and writing, deep deep poetic lyrics, or incredible storytelling of complexed subjects - Tuomas is the master. And with Floor, he has no limits at all - she can do everything - and do it better than he can imagine.
    Greetings from Nightwish Army Denmark 🇩🇰 👍 💪 🤘 🤘 🤘

This is a very meaningful piece for Tuomas and the band as a whole, and typically NW fans would recommend you read the backstory on why. Short story is that it deals with Tuomas' pain having fired the first lead singer and his longtime friend from the band. This was a cathartic release in dealing with that grief. That being said, it's impressive both on your part for feeling it, and the composition created by Tuomas that it evoked those emotions. You're not alone in feeling them; we all do. This is a true masterpiece of music.

Most people can hardly express themselves in words. Tuomas does it in amazing music that is so much more expressive than words could ever be. Your tears show that Tuomas has been successful communicating his pain. Normally I would hate to see a beautiful woman crying, but here it is fully understandable. A box of tissues is often recommended when listening to Nightwish.

Thank you for your reaction to this masterpiece.
"The Poet and The Pendulum" is part of a trilogy dealing with the break with their first singer, Tarja. The others are "Bye Bye Beautiful" and "Master Passion Greed" addressed at Tarja and Marcelo respectively. In this song, Tuomas deals with his own feelings over the break and its fallout. Clearly, he shows the mental and emotional torture he was under at the time. The song is written from a very dark period in his life - When it was written, Tarja was gone and no replacement had yet been found - Anette was not selected until after the whole "Dark Passion Play" album had been written, so on the early demos, Marco actually sang all the parts. Because this song is a reminder of such a painful time in his life, Tuomas even has the vocals cut from his in-ear monitors, and you can see early in the song, Emppu goes over to check on his wellbeing, and at the end, both Emppu and Marco (the only members of Nightwish who were there at the time) stand with him in moral support. It has not been performed since that tour and is very unlikely ever to be performed again.
I don't think many Nightwish fans can listen to this and not feel his pain and cry along with him - I know I reached for the tissues as soon as I saw which song you were reacting to.
The sections of the song start with "The End" which of course is the end of the Tarja era.
It finishes with "The Beginning" - the start of a new era without Tarja.
In between are his feelings and how he deals with them and is very dark indeed. The Finnish press (mainstream, not just musical) turned on Tuomas and blamed him over the whole affair, despite him being the one who had to be persuaded by the rest of Nightwish that they could not continue with Tarja anymore. He was hounded by the press and Tarja fans, with death threats from many who he had considered his friends - hence the lyrics concerning betrayal, and the erased text signifying all the songs he would have written for her.
So a beautiful song, but also a very painful one - and that comes across, even without you having read the (open) letters between Nightwish and Tarja and knowing the background in its entirety, you felt it, which is a mark of its genius. That exactly three minutes after the phrase "three minutes and counting" he mimes cutting of his throat, followed by the heartbeat slowing to a stop, to have included references to at least two works of English literature, and tie it all together into a meaningful and complete piece of music, with moods from the different instrumentation and vocal styles, is sheer perfection.

Wow Dasha, that was the most heartfelt reaction I have ever seen for this absolute masterpiece. I have to admit I'm 50 years old and I cried along with you on this one as I'm a depression survivor. This song as well as a few others like Reason to Fight by the band Disturbed have helped keep me grounded. I'm in a good place right now. I've watched and listened to this so many times and always cry at parts 3 and 5 which brings a lot of memories back but makes me stronger. Please I beg anyone out there who is having those kinds of thoughts to talk to someone, anyone. Keeping things bottled up is like a ticking timebomb. Take it from somebody who almost left it too late. I felt the emotions of this song before I even knew the back story as did you. You have a new subscriber here as your emotions are so pure. I only hope that the members of Nightwish also watch these reactions videos and read some of the comments and see how we all feel about them and how their music captivates us. this performance of "the poet and the pendulum" is one of the three best performances of the nightwish band, together with "ghost love score" from 2013 concert in Wacken (that you have already watched at and reacted to) and "the greatest show on earth" from 2015 concert in tampere - finland (actually there is a fourth best performance: "dead boy's poem" from the 2018 concert in buenos aires).

Dear Dasha, that was an interesting observation you made about Floor "wearing less clothes, more naked, like the emotions in the song". Very interesting indeed! I've never considered that, and don't remember hearing someone else mention it. I'm not sure that was the intent with the costume for this, but it's ALWAYS possible. We *are* talking about Nightwish here, with Floor the "empath". In any case, for someone as young as you and as new to Nightwish to be picking up on nuances like that, all there is to say is WELL DONE.

Young lady, this song is all about how the writer of Nightwish songs, Touamos felt after firing their first singer Tarja. He was suicidal for awhile as band following fell but he got through it and now you are seeing the newest edition of Nightwish with Floor jansen singing. This song is rarely played in concert because of the emotional impact it had on him and when you see the guitarists go to him, it is to support him in this song and keep him sane!

I can't have this song on my playlist when I'm driving, because I'm a soppy old git and I always get emotional when I hear it, even more now that I know the full background behind it.

I sub'd recently, I'd never before scrolled this far back on the youtube page before. It's - awesome - to see reaction to Nightwish! I'm laughing IRL, I listen to Nightwish all the time when working out. Good choice on this, Dream Theater - The Best of Times is another 'don't-miss-it' in this genre.
