  • If the tuning sounds wonky, it's because I'm using a microtonal tuning, namely 8 equal divisions of the perfect twelfth (8EDT, for my microtonal homies). It's my favorite tuning, along with it's bigger brother 16edt, and I use them both a lot!
So sorry for the wait on the next ORCA video, things have been hectic! Figured I'd upload a patch I've been really enjoying recently while you're waiting - I'll explain it in-depth in the next ORCA video, it's incredibly simple but you can get lots of beautiful generative patterns! :D
I screwed the patch up at the end by trying to change the generator's (X) clock rate, was a bit silly of me to do so without pausing but I didn't wanna interrupt the pretty patterns! I'll try it again in my next vid, and explore some other possibilities too :)
The synth I'm using here is Serum btw, just a simple patch based on the 3rd harmonic/subharmonic.

great videos Allieway, i dont understand how the numbers are used ..for instance G in midi velocity is = to 127 and F = to 119 , and if i wanted to use a number in between such as 122 or 124 .
another thing that i didnt get yet is the use of sharp notes...how do you write a C# ?

To enable midi sync to your daw just make sure it's sending sync on loopmidi and press control + space in orca to have it sync then start your daw if you have any questions about just ask !

Sound like microchromatic sound.... Is true?

When you say things like "m using a microtonal tuning, namely 8 equal divisions of the perfect twelfth (8EDT, for my microtonal homies). It's my favorite tuning, along with it's bigger brother 16edt, and I use them both a lot!" How the heck do you even fathom what that means?

That's a good question! I did a big introduction to equal temperments (which will help you understand what I mean by that crazy phrase) on the starting post of this forum thread here: llllllll.co/t/the-microtonal-thread/21453
      Hope this helps :D

However clever it might be, it sounds mostly horrible. Just stating the obvious, sorry.

It's just a demo of a technique, not a finished track, but I understand where you're coming from.
Not sure if you are referring to the tuning or the timbre though - if it's the tuning you dislike, that makes sense since you're probably more conditioned to 12-notes-per-octave tunings, unless you're into microtonal stuff. 8EDT is my favorite microtonal tuning, but it takes some time for your ears to adjust to before it starts sounding "in tune".
If it's the timbre, it does have a pretty strong 3rd harmonic/subharmonic which might sound like a strange "chord" to more western ears. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it though, I'll try to make some more traditional musical demos in the future :)

Orca is very experimental and obscure, it might be a while before people really start to master it. Allieway is probably one of the best Orca programmers out there. We have something new no-one knows how best to use it or what its full potential might be, give it some time and we will get there.

@@firehandszarb Aw shucks, you're too kind :) But yeah, it really is a whole new world to explore, such a cool program :D
