The #2 mistake in game dev is making a game in an overly saturated genre. pixelsh*t rougelike, tactical shooter, horror walking simulator, survival builder, etc. (#1 is making the game scope too big) People have seen the 1000th variation on these genres so unless your game has something very unique or is extremely polished and fun or has good multiplayer, there's very little reason to give your game a try. Also one important lesson to learn and this one hurts the soul: no one cares how hard you've worked on your game. All people want is the end product they've paid for
