Wonderful to see you back after missing a week. Also happy to see you went to Louisbourg and Goat Island. Louisbourg is very touristy but still a lot of fun. The authenticity of the people makes it very special. They don't over accentuate the differences, they just 'keep it real'. The Mi'kmaw people are the most lovely, friendly down-to-earth people you will ever encounter in Nova Scotia. Their humble, kind and giving nature always leaves me wishing we were all Mi'kmaw. Really looking forward to seeing your Cabot Trail trip and fingers crossed for at least one Moose sighting! Not to over-hype it but you are in for a treat. I just hope you don't come across some of the VERY poorly maintained outhouses along the way. Better yet... just avoid them to be safe. No... not kidding. Haha.

We really enjoyed Louisbourg, it was touristy but it was done in such a fun way you couldn't help but have a good time! We'd have stayed longer if the heavens hadn't opened. The the Mi'kmaw 💕 We can all learn so much from them! And yes, keep your fingers and toes crossed for a moose sighting for us 🤞 We have a composting loo already in the van, we'll stick to that 😂 xx

The southern coast of Cape Breton along the fleur de lis trail is grossly underrated due to the poor road conditions. Love that you guys got to see the beauty of our secluded beaches down there and truly feel it, I sometimes go there for peace of mind trips. Have a good trip and enjoy Cape Breton can’t wait for the next video! Thank you for showcasing the mikmaw culture too, it’s not done nearly often enough in video documentation.

As far as the weather you"ll here a lot just wait 5 minutes and the weather will change, it's true. Hope you have a good time while your here, don't be surprised if someone asks you in for a cup of tea. That's just how Cape Bretoner's are, maybe we'll see you in your travels, it's a small island. Before you leave Cape Breton you need to experience some of the traditional live music as well as attend a square dance. The Old Triangle Pub in Sydney, The Doryman Pub in Cheticamp and The Red Shoe Pub in Mabou are good venues for traditional CB music. West Mabou has a family square dance every Saturday night throughout most of the year I think you would enjoy.

Thanks so much for vlogging your Nova Scotia journey. I am from Ontario and am ashamed to say I knew very little about this beautiful province. I’m currently on vacation here and have visited some of the sites you have mentioned.
At this moment I’m waiting for my pizza from Big Mike, as you said it was the most delicious pizza you’ve ever had.
I’m looking forward to seeing where your travels take you

Yah, mosquitos. They really come out at dusk. Gotta be careful and have the repelant handy.
I was just thinking of you two yesterday. You have to get to Baddeck and Mabou. Who invented the telephone?
And where were he and his wife laid to rest? You can drive by Benin Breagh on your way to the Bell Museum in Baddeck.
A must see there! And the famous musical family, the Rankins are in Mabou. Stop in at their pub, the Red Shoe there.

And of course realize that at 9:10 those were the only sort of firearms the "Founding Fathers"
(no Founding Mothers, of course!) could even think of when they wrote a "right to bear arms" into
the US Constitution. Try killing innocent children with those things in a hurry. Not possible.

Happy trails guys!

Fun fact: The walmart you stayed in is actually the busiest in Atlantic Canada. While there are 3 in the area , that is the only full service mega store so basically the whole island goes there. When I worked for Coke, I used to stock it and they'd go through 3-6 pallets of two liters in a week sometimes.
Really glad you made it to the fortress! I call it the undead fortress because it was actually taken twice and restored twice. It was taken by boston, but then given back to the french with minimal damage (they attacked from the land which the people that lived in the fortress never even trained for since it wasn't expected) and then they were taken from the ocean later and it was fully leveled. They have since restored about 30% of it, so its basically the fortress that won't stay dead.
Also, if you had of kept going down spar road you would have made it to one of sydney's largest and most beautiful parks! But don't sleep there because it was formerly the site of the tarponds. Basically, one of sydney's main industries was steel production. There was a tidal estuary there, so the geniuses that managed the plant decided to just dump the chemicals into it, thinking the tides would take it out to sea. The problem being that most of the chemicals they dumped were heavier than water, so the water went out with trace amount of chemicals, and the majority of the chemicals stayed. It was one of the worst envronmental disasters in North America for decades and was only recently cleaned up. As a result, Sydney was one of the cancer capitals of the world for a long time. The best part? For most of my life the only thing they did to protect the local people was put up a chain link fence XD. I will say though, they did an amazing job on reclaiming and cleaning the site, and it does make a gorgeous park now.
Hey, I don't just sugar coat things about where I'm from. Which reminds me. When you were talking from the walmart? Yeah, our Municipal dump is a stones throw behind you past those trees XD
Edit: Oh, before I forget. Cape Breton has more lakes than most US states, and each has many off shoot ponds. This is primarily why we have so many mosquitos. However, we're not the worst in Canada. Ontario is ahead of us in that regard and Manitoba is the undisputed grand champ of bug problems (it also has an crazy amount of lakes, ponds and wet lands).

    • @OverlandingSophia
      @OverlandingSophia  Рік тому

3-6 pallets a week! That's insane 😳 Hahah well thankfully we couldn't smell the municipal dump that night! So glad to hear they cleaned up the tarponds, it's amazing how disasters like that can be turned around into beautiful parks. There's an old quarry near where I grew up that's the same. A beautiful place now, but go back 50 years and it was a scar on the landscape.

My mom's side of the family grew up in Inverness, which you'll be passing through. Greatest people in the world there and a good third of them have the last name Gillis, just like my mom. I'm from Manitoba but spent every summer in Inverness. It was the best. Cape Breton is such and incredible place. Can't wait to see your next video! Cheers! Beautiful video but of course Cape Breton is beautiful to start with. Hope you visit the Highland Village at Iona -- it shows you the early life of the Scottish settlers in Cape Breton --- and the Gaelic College near Baddeck. Once the Scots arrived in Cape Breton --they really took over! But the Mi'kmaq and Acadian cultures are strong and deeply rooted on the island. Enjoy the scenery because it will only get better!

Hey I’m glad you guys are enjoying our island when you go onto the Cabot Trail be sure to fill your gas tank up since there aren’t very many gas stations along the trail but as a Caper I would like to recommend the harbour restaurant in Cheticamp for lunch or dinner they make a mean fish and chips there another popular spot for tourists is the church there in Cheticamp it was completely hand built from stones and rocks found along the shore and surrounding area there are also paintings and painted glass windows that are stunning to look at and for hiking the Cape Breton national Park there has quite a few hiking trails that Have amazing Scenery as well as a beach along the road that occasionally on the look off you can see pilot whales or Dolphins, if you do go to any of those sites I do hope you enjoy and Finally welcome to Cape Breton I hope you enjoy my home
