    My favorite moment from playing LMoP was when our kobold sorcerer persuaded the cultists that Venomfang sent him to gather tribute. He then took the 3 diamonds they have and negotiated with Venomfang to leave if we cleared out Cragmaw Castle for him. He then went back to the cultists and convinced them that Venomfang wanted them to clear out Cragmaw for him. (He kept rolling pretty high on his checks) So the rest of the party followed behind out of sight while the kobold led the cultist to the castle, he boldly led them inside to the barracks and shrine before the goblins decided to attack. Then being trapped there with his small size he slipped out one of the arrow slits, leaving the cultists as a doomed distraction. While that was going on the rest of us went in through the southern door.

    My players first butchered the cultists then disguised one of them and an invisible servant and drew the ash zombies in the nearest houses to Venomfang lair in the tower. Since the zombies are immune to its poison breath, it had to fight them, receiving damages in the process. The party attacked when the last zombie was destroyed and slayed the dragon which had about 2/3 of it hit points. I found their idea so clever that I had the dragon fight to the death :)

      Gotta love when the players use the environment and their creativity!

      😅😅😅 thanks!
      You can also play with their expectations a bit and disguise them as a sweet old woman (hag) and then if the party end up thinking they have the upper hand in their conversations with them, surprise, dragon. Lol
      So many fun ways to tinker with this encounter!

    I've used this dragon cult to connect phandelver into the Red Hand of Doom.
    Venomfang doesn't need to be nurfed. He exists to teach new players that D&D is not a video game, you can be out matched. It's not a nice linier progression. You have to make decisions that can get you killed. You have to think of none martial ways to deal with problems.

    Venomfang was adapted into our whole campaigns BBEG and worked out a lot better than the generic one in the book.

      Very cool option. How did you have him/her take over in place of the Black Spider?

    • @RichMerry
      @RichMerry 3 роки тому +1

      @@BlueCollarDM the final room was replaced with a pathway that lead up to the new open air nest of Venomfang and used the black spider as one of venomfangs aliases. Turns out he was working for another guy in waterdeep. That lead the party to the city and the next home brewed chapter of the story.

      @@RichMerry I love it! A really creative way to include both in the adventure. Did you change/do anything different with Thundertree?

    My party is currently deciding the best way to deal with the dragon and cult, and these ideas are really useful! I expect my party to fight, but they always do what I don't expect so these other ideas are great!

    I’ve used Venomfang as the terrifying dragon he is! I did not hold back and ended up taking out a few characters plus poor Droop who they brought along. The remaining party members drove the dragon off and the Druid felt bad enough that he REINCARNATED the fallen party members. What followed was some of the best roleplaying this party had ever done. Although one power builder was not happy with the new race and pretty much quit even though I was going to give them a way to fix their races in Wave Echo Cave if they so desired.

    Hehe. I like the possibilities of VenomFang. My party never made it there. Another thing could be that it has chameleon like properties since its green and foresty and he can hide and trick and terrorize the players. Love the idea of a hostage player. It's sure to make the party fidget.

    • @BlueCollarDM
      @BlueCollarDM  3 роки тому

      Absolutely it could! Especially if you want this dragon included for the situation when the players don’t go to Thundertree!

    My group has came across him yet, but all dragons love loyal minions who do looting for them. So I planning on having him charge 10% of any loot the group finds as tribute to him. But it going to depend on how many show up at the Adventure League table.

    • @BlueCollarDM
      @BlueCollarDM  2 роки тому

      This is true and a great way to introduce minions and manipulation that dragons love to use.

    I have a very very simple fix for Venomfang, just make him a Wyrmling instead of a Young Dragon and he should be a dificult but completely doable fight.

    As far as I’m concerned reidolth has a purpose already which is the defense of the natural cycle. His stationing in thundertree speaks to someone willing to protect the blights while hoping to slowly rid the area of undead without upsetting the ecosystem that has built itself up in town. That’s plenty of purpose not every single thing in the campaign needs a 5 step plan and thundertree as an encounter is already such a major jump from the other side quests, anytime you just throw a dragon in the mix it risks realigning your entire campaign, it’s immediately the largest threat in the module (nezznar kinda sucks) making reidolth hyper morally complex with. 12 step plan for the region just crowds everything imo
