I just came back to this game and i've been improving those patches/textures that you also happen to be using here. Your thoughts on Fusion are spot on. I was very into Wipeout in the PSX days, had all releases, including on Saturn and PC DOS. I got Fusion on release and 100% completed it, but parts of it certainly weren't enjoyable. Everything you said about the bugs (yes they happen on real hardware btw) and physics is true. I'll also add that the ship handling no longer holds up at the highest speeds with the upgraded ships. Even with tons of practice you'll still hit walls more often than you'd like. The PCSX2 patches can also make the game far better than is really is (but that's why i'm working on them). For example the camera was a HUGE problem, there was no chase cam. Instead the camera is pretty much on top of your ship, so you couldn't even see the ground below you after a jump, like on Florian Height 3. Good luck lining up your ship for a perfect landing on that jump every time. It was such a blatantly awful decision. But now it's easy to do this with the chase cam patch. It was also very disappointing that The Designers Republic didn't work on Fusion. Their classic UK graphic design language made the entire Wipeout look. It made those games really stand out. I mean even looking at the menu screens in Fusion you can see that they're a step down (which also have a totally out of place and annoying 10 second music loop) and then there's those ship designs... Like F-Zero and Wipeout had a deformed baby. It all felt kinda... yank. Anywayyy... I just finished the game again and wanted to rant lol... On one hand Fusion has some really nice ideas, there's a lot to like, but then they go and ruin it with blatant stupidity.
Looks incredible, compared to how I remember it. I'm very glad I now have a PC capable of handling Wipeout HD at 120fps 4K. I ended up on this video looking for it lol
I think some of the bugs are from emulation. I played this game grey when it was new on the PS2 and I don't remember that gravity pad going out of bounds. However now I'm playing again on PCSXE and I get the exact same gravity pad always flipping me through the track as you do. There were definitely some kinda buggy moments back then as well though, but with such high speeds and such powerful weapons in the endgame, I think it is hard to keep everything in check at all times in the physics engine. I totally love this game though, I was too young for a ps1, so I got a ps2 later and when I was about 8 years old this was my very first antigravity racing game. And let me tell you, it was amazing. The speed, the upgrades, the weapons, getting tournament points for blasting the opponents to dust. The handling is more rigid than before but it is still hard to master and satisfying to do so. Also you get up to over 4000 km/h in this game on Katmoda 12, I don't know if you can do that in any other Wipeout or even Redout. When I got Pulse on the PSP later, I actually found myself disliking some of the things that had changed compared to Fusion. Where was the upgrade system, multiple track layouts, gritty style and even the "contender eliminated" announcer for example. Later though, I played all the Wipeouts before this one and I do really understand what people found off about this title. 2097 and 3 are really so different. Still though, every single one of these games is amazing in their own way I feel.
Picking this game up again after so many years and actually getting through the tournaments was a great time! Regret not giving it a proper chance back in the day. I’d also not be against seeing the upgrade system return, if another mainline wipEout game was ever made again.
I think there’s a mod which improves the physics. I believe it may have been discussed on WipEout Zone. Also, iirc, the game did have some slowdown and bugs on console too…
@@RyanUkAus Er… I just did some digging. While there were attempts to mod the physics, nobody actually made a patch for it… Sorry for getting your hopes up :c
It's not on UA-cam, was something I made in Music 2000 so I could have a track that wouldn't hit copyright in the video. It's here if you want it, it's nothing too special, just something I made for the background music! drive.google.com/file/d/1JSuVZvgDquAim3PmyOA6aKdEeiZIdGO8/view?usp=sharing

@@RyanUkAus Good to hear! Yeah that would be dope, I do like the upgrade system in Redout 2 as well though. That game rocks too.
how did you get the menu fonts to look so sharp? Loved the video by the way!
Part of the HD texture pack, there should be download links in the description!

I’ll have to seek that out, I’d love to play this game with some of the older style physics!!!

What's the song in the intro? Looks fantastic!
The music was something I made quickly that sounded a bit wipeout like!
@@RyanUkAus Amazing, what's the track ID? is it on youtube?

@@RyanUkAus I immediately thought it wasn't a Wipeout song from any game in the series but loved it - thanks for sharing it's fantastic
