- Watch as a plane experiences rough turbulence on the approach to Tampa, Florida in inclement weather. The drop caused loose items to fly around the cabin and some overhead bin doors to open. Everyone remained calm and the pilots did an amazing job navigating around the storms.

Just pointing something out. A plane dropping 50 feet isn’t all that bad. A plane normally descends at 2000 feet per minute which after some math is 30 feet per second. And when In a vertical cloud that has strong winds pushing down, a drop of 50 feet is quite common. Not discrediting the video. But just pointing out that the severity isn’t all that great.
Hello Jack, that's exactly what the pilot said too. Just a few spilled drinks and a couple of overhead bin doors came open, that was about the extent of it. I'm always amazed at how well built the aircraft are and the amount of abuse they take, even from just normal everyday departures and landings. Thanks for watching!
True that- In fact I didnt even notice anything amiss in the video. Turbulence is when you have a huge B777 struggling like hell to keep steady at cruise speeds over the mountains of Central Asia, and the GE90s have to roar loudly to climb out of FL370.
So it’s normal? Is the feeling scary? There’s a lot of turbulence when entering the US southern states.

No, been flying back and forth every two weeks from CO to CA and when I hear that beep, I know I’m in for a ride. 🤣 Flying again tomorrow. Thunderstorms in the radar, I’m gonna be hearing more beeps than usual.
The worst turbulence I've ever experienced was a connection flight from Nashville to Memphis. The plan violently shook from the time we took off until we landed. I was trying to sleep but I hit my head and it was hurting and I wanted to cuss out loud.

I had a similar situation but from Nashville to Dallas, my 1st flight in my life and we have a extreme Turbulence during the landing
Same here from la to ny the take off was pretty awful the plane kept shaking really bad I was told once we made it to the right altitude that it was going to stop but it never did the whole flight was pretty bad I couldn’t even sleep and the landing was horrible luckily on my way back home to la the flight was normal and very smooth

Passengers radially over state how far they think the plane dropped. I have a pilot friend who has flown for decades and he has encountered severe turbulence multiple times. He said the altimeter never moved more than ten feet. Think about it like this: Driving a car at sixty and hitting a three inch deep pothole can violently jarring. In a plane, you are going over 500 mph and a drop of a few feet feels severe.

these planes are literally built to withstand heavy amount of turbulence it cannot take a plane down. guess people don’t know that
@@hulkster4374that's still false sense of security. Pilots still avoid flying into thunderstorms like the plague. Thunderstorms have the worst turbulence, plus they seriously mess up instruments and pilots judgement. Just ask Air France.

Tbh I've grown to be quite a fan of turbulence, at least for a few minutes. I'm well aware at this point that it's perfectly safe for the most part unless you're flying through some really bad stuff. I enjoy the feeling of sudden dips and such.

Last plane i was in, flying to va from GA had wicked turbulence, we had an emergency diversion, some idiot in a cessna flew into airport space, not cleared, we saw the actual plane near us, then upon landing, pilot pulled up at the last min because of a down draft from a storm area over us, we made another go around to land. Pilot kept us updated but i was done for a bit with flying.

I used to be a frequent flyer and most of the flights I was on were smooth. Even if there was turbulence, it would only be like 15 minutes of being a little bumpy. But I do remember flying on an A340-600 (flying pencil) and the turbulence was pretty strong.

Reminds me of the turbulence on a United Airlines flight I took as we descended through a springtime thunderstorm on approach to CHS. We were in for quite a ride, someone even fell in the aisle!
I think we know what the moral of the story is. if you see a big cloud hold on for dear life or if your like me and like aviation put your hands in the air like it’s a rollercoaster drop.

I'm a flight attendant for Southwest and I will tell you that some of the WORST turbulence I have ever experienced was in California! High winds, (Santa Anas) and the hot desert heat landings in ONT, BUR is bad, etc.

@@joelt4416 I also live in California, and landing anywhere there, especially at the airport near where I live, San Jose, is very bumpy. Even the places that you mentioned have some very bumpy air, including San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Went through a big thunderstorm when flying to Majorca back in '75, when I was kid. It was horrible , the plane was jumping all around and lightening flashes everywhere. Very nervous flyer since then and try to fly only hen absolutely necessary. My dad, said it was very rough and he'd been a Lanc pilot in WW2 !

I didn't see any drop... this was a COMPLETELY normal descent into Tampa
Know that feel with SAS made me scream just taking off Frankfurt/Airport and on airbon went straight q cloud we dropped suddenly a few feets scared the shit out of me...got comforted by a lady next to me..

I can relate to this, one time I was going to Florida with my family and we dropped a bit during a turbulence and we all started screaming, I hated it but now since that was 3 years ago I find it funny.
It's definitely a helpless feeling, but made a little more comforting by the fact that the planes are built to withstand it, and then some. Thank you for watching, and happy future flying!
A few years ago, flying Hong-Kong to DC on Cathy Pacific B777, we hit turbulance over the sea between Korea and Japan. I have never experienced turbalance that bad I thought we were going down. Afterwards I talked to the flight attendant and he said he has seen worse. The whole time, I wanted the pilot to land Japan and just drop us off there. Man, the jetstreams over the Pacific are no joke.
I've actually heard of that before - I can't imagine how rough it can be! I'm sure the pilots and flight attendants have all kinds of stories to tell. Anyway, thanks for watching!
It’s not dangerous
Flew from Vancouver to Hawaii (Honolulu) last Wednesday; scariest turbulence I've ever experienced for the last hour of the flight. Our pilot gave us a potential turbulence warning on take off, but when we actually started experiencing it for the last hour all I could think was "Why would they fly through this?!?!" Never been so happy to be back on the ground lol.

I've never been that way myself, but I had heard that flying over the Pacific can be extremely rough at times, especially if there are storms anywhere near the flight path. Today I went on a southwest airline plane I flew from Phoenix to Ontario ca during the last ten minutes there was extreme turbulence we dropped about 30 feet it was bad turbulence and for me it was a weird feeling cause it was only my 4th flight
Although it is perfectly normal and the plane can withstand a ton of abuse, it sure can be frightening at times! At least it's pretty rare for a plane to drop that far, and most times it's a pretty smooth ride. Thanks for watching and happy travels!

@@1991Meka I've been flying for 40 years, I'm not going to lie to you, there will be turbulence, but one thing that can help put your mind at ease is conductIng lot of research on turbulence (and flying in general). In addition, review explanations from pilots via UA-cam, the more you understand what's going on, the chime sounds, take off and landing procedures, etc., the less anxiety you will have.
Knowledge is power, the more you know, the less you have to fear. Face your fears, you only live once. ☺️

I'm sort of a plane buff, so I just asked the pilot when I got off the plane - lol. He said it was about 50 feet or so and reassured me that the plane was very capable (and the pilots - lol). Thanks for watching!

same for me, I was flying frontier ( not the best) and on my way back from new York we randomly just fell probably about 20-30 feet, but it wasn't too bad because only after about 30 minutes we landed, but I can say, it was scary but I knew we were in control

Probably 20-30 feet lol. Seriously stop saying stupid claim like that. You’ll never know unless you had something to measure it, and it’s not possible yet. To look smart next time, just say we got a turbulence and the plane dropped a little bit, WHICH IS NORMAL. Exaggerate stuff will just make you look dumb.
Whenever I’m on a plane that’s experiencing severe turbulence I like to scream “oh my God we’re all gonna die“ and then sit back and watch people freak the fuck out😂😂😂

fun fact i was flying over the bay of bengal (one of the most turbulent places in the world) and the plane started to fall for like 10 seconds or more, like really fast on a 787 max in 2019

I experienced a majer free fall during a domestic flight in Nepal recently, it was so terrifying for a moment felt like a last moment. Later the cabin crew told that fall was at least 400 ft or more

I had a similar experience just under a month ago, it was definitely the scariest turbelence i've ever experienced. The plane dropped about 100 feet and was in a near 180 degree angle, the plane wasn't on a turning course either. Nothing popped out but there were passengers screaming along with my sister. It was scary but funny at the same time once you're well off the plane.
@liz boa Obviously didn’t mean it like that 🤦♂️ the plane was on a turning point and the wing was almost the whole way to the left, my mistake there.
@@lizboa3397 Actually, that's dependent on the plane (or axis) of symmetry being referenced, no pun intended. On Commercial Aircraft the maximum bank angle turn is 30 degrees, unless the pilots violated that policy, the OP here likely felt the turn was much more dramatic than it was given his seating and orientation.

I’ve been to Tampa 10 times now, 7 out of 10 times there has been severe/bad turbulence on approach to the airport. This happens all the time and is completely normal, Florida usually have severe/worrying thunderstorms all the time, it completely the norm there. Turbulence is usually caused by wind pushing the plane around. If you think or a bird in the wind, the bird gets pushed around BUT NEVER FALLS it stays in the air, this is the same with a plane, the plane gets pushed around BUT DOESN’T EVER FALL, this is because of the air o dynamics. - (For anyone scared of flying to Florida because of this) (There honestly nothing to worry about)
Whenever you feel the plane drop, this is because the pilot is trying to get below the “storm” so it won’t worry/disturb the passengers to much and for to long. This isn’t because the thunderstorm is life threatening and you might die if you stay in it, he is only dropping the plane for your comfort 👍.
Anyways, Planes can take A LOT of thunderstorm abuse, it can tolerate anything almost. I mean there was a delta flight once which flew inside of HURRICANE IRMA at 180mph winds, but every single person on the plane only ever said “it the was the most fun, and best experience of my life”

As a frequent flyer between Sydney and LA crossing the Pacific often has some of the most violent CAT (Clear Air Turbulence) turbulence that is undetectable on the aircraft weather radar.
The only time in 40 years of flying I've been scared was over the Pacific at night when we hit the most violent turbulence, I've never seen a 747s wings bounce so much and stuff get thrown around the cabin.
I've heard that flying over the Pacific and be extremely rough. Although I haven't done it yet myself, I appreciate you sharing your experience. It's pretty amazing what the wings on these large aircraft can withstand! Thanks for watching!
Every time you see clouds coming, there is certainly going to be turbulence
About 20 some years ago I was coming back from a family vacation in Cancun as a young teen. We were flying over the southern US around Georgia when there was a bad storm. The plane suddenly dropped 1000 ft during dinner. It happened so fast everything started flying to the top of the cabin. It was the scariest 15/30 seconds of my life. It all happened too quickly to even think. I remember hearing a flight attendant had injured her neck hitting the top of the airplane cabin and was down in the cargo being attended too. Thankfully everyone made it back to DTW that day. I will never forget that.
To be honest I was trying to find where that part was the only thing I saw was when it seems the photographer readjusted their seating position. Trust me I’ve been on Flights where are food trees were thrown into the air along with the air service personnel. But very nice scenery of clouds especially coming around Tampa in perhaps the summertime maybe?

The pilot made an announcement over the P.A. saying that we had crossed "clear air turbulence" likely from another passing jet and said that it was just a "minor" bump with nothing to worry about. Thanks for watching!
This happened to me aswell when I flew with lufthansa a340-300 to tampa and we landed in a thunderstorm, the whole descent was the most turbulence ive ever experienced.... it was fun actually

Couldn't spot a thing. I flew to Crete and just before arriving the plane dropped like a stone for around 200 feet.
The pilot on flight from Boston to Baltimore gathered everyone at the gate before boarding plane and mentioned there was turbulence in our flight path. Never seen this before for a major airline which concerned me in all years of flying. Didn't think flight was too bad until we were descending and the plane felt like it dropped 50ft. It was like jumping from a tree to a trampoline below. What may have felt like 50ft was probably a lot more for a jet passenger plane vertical shift.

Last night I was flying with Ryanair to Dublin and about 3/4 through the flight it felt like we went through a really aggressive stall and all of a sudden back to really smooth flight? Any idea what it could’ve been? It was quite terrifying to be honest.
It may have been to retard some speed possibly? Not 100% sure though, as it sounds like it was in level flight and that would be slightly unusual to make an aggressive move. Thanks for watching!
You hit an air pocket. If you look up “clear air turbulence” it’ll explain it a bit more. It happens a decent amount
There is no such thing as an air pocket. You probably flew into a cloud on descent and thats what caused the turbulence

Going through clouds is always a very bumpy ride, but realistically, when you're THOUSANDS of feet in the air, 50ft is nothing. Severe turbulence can get pretty hairy though.

Flying through clouds typically is just fine, so saying "always very bumpy" is misleading. You're right though that 50 feet is nothing in terms of turbulence. I think we can all agree that severe turbulence can be quite scary.

A plane dropping 50 feet isn’t even close to bad. It’s normal turbulence. I was in a plane going to LAX and because of the heat the plane would drop like 80 feet and it’s nothin

I was once on a Qatar Airways a350 and about half way into the flight the plane just dropped what felt like a couple thousand feet. I remember seeing a flight attendant rise onto the planes ceiling and food flung around to the other side of the cabin. I was absolutely petrified and from then on I have been a somewhat nervous flyer. Does anyone know what happened
Wow, that's scary! The pilot explained it as "clear air turbulence" probably caused by another plane traveling through the same air within the past few minutes. He said that big "bumps" do happen every once and a while, but are no harm to the aircraft. He said that's why they always recommend keeping seatbelts on, even when the air is smooth. @@AmbitiousRandomness This is due to how aircraft are fit into tighter spaces within the same airways in different directions, called RVSM, you can look it up. You'll fly into another aircrafts wake as youre only about 1000ft apart. Far enough on autopilot to be very safe but you will fly into the disrupted atmosphere a large jet leaves behind and below it and get a little jolted. Very normal, kind of cool tidbit!

Pretty recently, about a month ago, i took off from Philadelphia and it was pretty overcast. We took off and immediately afterwards, we got terrible turbulence until, i kid you not, everybody in that plane floated for a split second, and screams echoed. some poor flight attendant hit her head on the ceiling. scariest flight for sure

I love when they do that! I've dropped a good 300ft before in a 737. Luckily we were in decent & everyone was safely buckled. It's like the Giant drop ride, only 10,000ft in the air & way more expensive to ride.

He was inside of a very large vertical cloud, so you couldn’t tell the dropping occurred, although it did.

I was on a very turbulent flight that the plane shook violently! A plane mechanic was sent to change the shock absorbers mid flight and was smooth sailing all the way to our destination

@@AmbitiousRandomness As an airframe and powerplant mechanic it is a good sign when the mechanic comes out. It means your flight will be safer and the mechanic has the power to ground any a/c that aren't flight worthy or need to be fixed immediately per company SOPs.

Fort Myers to Chicago. Moderate turbulence and reminded me why I don’t do roller coasters. Also Helsinki to Stockholm on a CRJ 900 which is a smaller plane that’s more susceptible to turbulence. And it was raining that entire flight.

Bruh I was on my way to the Denver airport and the plane had so much turbulence and dropped 100 feet in like under a second. Some woman yelped and that’s what made me scared
I hate flying for this reason. I was on a flight from Boston to Florida, easy right? The turbulence was so bad, all the lights went out and it just kept getting tossed around. It was terrifying. Now when I fly, I will never get out of my seat, I stay buckled in and hold on for the whole trip. Even anxiety meds don’t work. 😂

I cant even tell at what point in the video it happened. No screams from inside the cabin either. Makes me wonder how severe the turbulence was on a flight I was on where the entire plane was screaming and the pilots had to come over the speakers to calm everyone down.

How does anyone but the pilot know that it was 50 feet? How do you measure that when you're dealing with 1,000s of feet. Loose items flying around the cabin sounds more like a poltergeist. Was Steven Spielberg in 1st class? Looks like the pilots (more than one pilot) drove right through the thunderhead to give the passengers a little joyride. Would sure have been much fun to have seen more of this thriller. Oh, I know I myself would NOT have remained calm with items flying around the cabin (and my head).
