From my experience, employers don't even care about contacting references. However, if working with a third party recruiter, they always do reference checks. I've gotten offers from companies who I didn't even provide references to. It's common, in fact. Seems like it's mainly a recruiter thing. Also, many people don't even answer their phone these days because of perceived spam calls.

I am in the final stage of the interview process with a potentially really good opportunity and the recruiter today advised she will "probably" need references. I thought it through and then viewed your video, and now I feel much better about proceeding with references. So glad I subscribed.

Well, I just have 2 people that I think can say something good about my job performance... They called my references... My surprise is that I did not get any of the jobs. How do I know if the references are good and what could happen if I refuse to give references? I really need help with this. Thank you.

No. “When you have made an offer, contingent on verifying my dates of employment and job descriptions, and I have accepted, I will give you the green light to call.”
Andy, you say to put on the application, Do Not Call references. First, won't that turn off potential employers and second, there is not usually a place to do that. Where do you suggest adding it. Thanks! #bootcamper
Andy, thanks for the video. I just finished an interview but the interviewer hasn't ask me to provide the references, should I give it to them to increase the chance of me getting an offer? (Since the referees also worked for the company that I applied for)

I was finally offered a fantastic state job but unfortunately they have to speak to my current supervisor who doesn’t know that I’m looking. My leaving is going to affect her and the office immensely and while we have a great relationship, she can be very vindictive. I’m very concerned about her sabotaging this new offer with a bad reference despite my glowing annual review (that they may not be willing to accept). What would you recommend I do in this situation?
I would share this with them. There’s absolutely no reason whatsoever your new job should be contingent on the speaking to your current supervisor. Share with them your search is confidential, no one knows you’re looking, and you would prefer to give them other references.

I've seen some online job application where you need to accept their term. One of the terms was that you approve them to contact you current employer.

Actually, I would out them in the application but indicate to verbally mentioned do not call during your recruitment screen if you attain one!

They often ask in advance when you're filling out the application to cite references.
