Hard to beat "One-Off" cars. And a Shelby to boot. Thanks Lou and Brian.
My pleasure sharing with you rizzle razzleuno and you're welcome, Lou
I have never been a Ford man per say, but I have to admit that you made it a great day for me. Anytime I can learn something or see something new in a day. Well, that just became a great day. Thank you for posting this video.
You're welcome, I'm with you, when I find a car I can video and share that is different it's like finding a Christmas present.
I remember seeing Kevin Costner driving a 67-68 Shelby convertible.
He was leaving a Hollywood premier of some sort. Camera man zoomed in on him in his car.
Top was up, windows were down, and it was drizzling..... Strange what we remember...
Hi Edward, Happy to read this car brings back memories of Kevin Costners car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Well, the car is definitely amazing and unique...But, I think the historical detective work is even more amazing....
I found the detective work interesting too.
kramden all the research about the car is online at www.1967shelbyconvertible.com
Brian, cool web site! Lou
I know im asking the wrong place but does any of you know of a way to get back into an instagram account??
I was dumb forgot the password. I would love any tricks you can offer me!
@Pierce Lachlan Instablaster =)
Absolutely stunning car
Glad you enjoy this car :-)
Back in high school my buddy had a 67 fast back 289 3 spd stick. It was a nice little car.
But my other buddy bought a 1971 Boss 351 he also had a 69 or 70 351 Cleveland 4 spd.
My good buddy had a 426 Hemi 1923 T- Bucket also had a 1968 390 auto. It was a dog.
The new GT-500's Rock.
Those were the days when we all had muscle cars.
Lou I love your videos because it takes me back to a much better time.
Thanks for the tour down memory lane.
Thanks Brian for the tour of your GT-500. But it's no good just sitting there.
A day at the track would be a great video!
Thanks again Lou I really enjoy your great vids!!
Hi Gary Gibbs, You clearly grew up with the Car Guys and I can see they helped fuel your passion :-) Thank you for the kind words regarding the videos on the Channel, I appreciate that, Lou
That in '69 there were NO 351 Cleveland Mustangs, there WAS a Boss 302 that was a 302 with Cleveland heads! The '70 Mustang had a 351 Cleveland, but at lower output than the '71 Boss 351!
sold for 775,000 plus auction buyer's premium.People were flipping out at this auction, they figured it would go for 3-400k
Hi john dillinger, Thank you for viewing & sharing your knowledge, Lou
My regular 67 Coupe was made one month prior to this car being made my cars build date is October 5th 1966 from the San Jose plant pretty neat that this car came from the same plant as mine
Hi 67mustang6661, Thank you for viewing and sharing details on your 67 Coupe :-) Lou
I have heard so many stories about that car. It is so nice to know the real story behind the rarest car in the world. I do appreciate all of the research he did to tell the true story.
Hi Randy Cavin, Glad you enjoyed this one :-) Thank you for viewing, Lou
I dig the roller type tachometer under the speedometer and the exhaust note sounds great.
Hi Gene, So glad you like this one. Me too, Lou
I had a '67 in high school that I put a Boss 302 and M22 transmission in, along w/ a 3:90 rear end and it would turn 13 second quarter miles. So much fun!
That does sound fun! Thank you for viewing and sharing.
Thank you again Lou. Awesome car but an amazing story. You've done it again.......I am not happy with the ' got to kill ya ' bit..........We need you Lou.
Glad you're having fun seeing the cars and hearing the stories on the Channel :-)
Excellent interview. The owner provides information not provided in any of the many books written about shelbys. Thanks Lou....
Hi dicarlo57, Thank you for the kind words on the interview, and thank you for viewing and sharing, Hope you see many more cars on this UA-cam Channel you'll enjoy, Lou

Hi Hisham Elfiki, Glad you enjoyed this one is one of the "BEST VIDEOS" :-) High praise. Hope you have a great day too. You're welcome,, Lou
Definitely a rare car! That big block sound is music to my ears! Enjoyed this car story!
Glad to read you enjoy this episode :-)
Great car and video! Interesting story behind this specific car.
Hi Jeff King, Thank you for the wonderful comment :-) I enjoyed listening and sharing the story too, Lou
Neat car! I had # 42 GT 350. Same color. Awesome video Lou!
Hi Mark's Snakepit, Glad you enjoy this car :-) Thank you regarding the video, Lou
I bought a '68 GT 350 convertible (new) in '68, same white over red. The "sticker" was $4888.xx (about $48K in 2020 $$). I originally was going to get a GT 500 (427ci, 400HP), but was about 6 weeks too late because Ford stopped building them and because I would have to wait quite a while for the GT 500KR (428ci, 335HP), I decided on this BEAUTIFUL GT 350 sitting on the dealer's lot all ready to go! BIG mistake, car was ALL SHOW with "Grandma" GO. To make a long story short and to save face on the street, I had a local "speed shop" give it the works in building that 302 into a REAL street machine to the tune of about $1300.....that's $13,000 in todays dollars! If I would have waited for that 428 "King of the Road" I would have saved a ton of coin AND had an even FASTER Shelby!
I really enjoyed that story and what a beautiful car ..
Hi Gator Guy, Glad you enjoy the story and the car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
very nice, engine is so smooth
Hi estpst, Glad you enjoyed the sound of this one :-) Lou
What an absolute Unicorn! 😎🇺🇸❤️
You're right :-)
incredible!!
Happy to read you think this car is "incredible!!" :-)
Very beautiful perfect looking car wow just love the colours perfect
High praise :-)
Awesome Car 1 of 1, 7.0 liter 1967 Shelby, The motor looked like a 427 side oilier, big HP like 650 there, some great sound too. Thanks Lou Great Car!
Glad to read you found this Winner :-)
The Shelby coupe had the 427.
The '68 Shelby GT 500 (427ci) was factory rated at 400HP, quite a ways from 650! Maybe the '68 427 was NOT the "side oiler"?
There are NO sidelights. Why would anyone believe it was a 1968? LOL!
You'd think it was caught by someone.
The '68 also had padded factory roll bars (coupe & convert.)along with rectangular high beam headlights (inset in the grill) and with '67 T-Bird tail lights (3 section, separated by chrome trim). The interior on the '68 would have a center console in which there were oil pressure and ammeter (NOT volts) installed, very little chrome but LOTS of "wood" tape! As for the engine, MY '68 GT 350 had a Windsor 302 putting out 250HP (gross) mainly because of higher compression compared to a "regular" 302. The GT 350 had the SAME oval air cleaner for ONE 4-barrel carb. If one didn't look close, they might have thought it was a DUAL 4-barrel or SIX-PACK setup!

This is a piece of history. Has sold for Big Bucks in the past. I heard that Shelby used this car as a company car and would pick up Ford Exec's in it. Even a loaner at the time!
Hi carsbyjeff, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge about the car, Lou
wow you learn something new everyday wish you could do video on that 1967 Shelby super snake it was one of one built as well only Shelby mustang with a 427 side oiler from factory
That's a good idea for a video. Do you know where the car is?
Lou Costabile no sure don't but last time it sold on mecum maybe like a year ago I think the gentleman that bought it was from Canada but that's all I know
The "Super Snake" was not the only factory side-oiler. It was the only one fitted with a GT40 motor to achieve the speeds necessary for the Goodyear tire tests. The estimated retail price was deemed too expensive as compared to the Cobra, so it never was offered to the public. Check out corvettes-musclecars.com/gallery2/v/al_ford/1967+Shelby+GT500+Mustang+Factory+427+Side-Oiler/ for an example of a factory side-oiler.
Thanks Brian for the link, I enjoyed that. Lou
BTW, there were a few cars that were invited and didn't make it to the 2016 MCACN show. The '67 Shelby G.T. 500 Fastback "Super Snake" and the '67 Shelby G.T. 500 Fastback #0100 -- the very first G.T. 500 built, were both invited, but the owners were unable to attend.
A real beauty! Awesome.
My Brothers 2012 GT-500 convertible 6 spd is awesome !
Just real beauty's !!
Ford has a winner !
Hi Gary Gibbs, Glad you like this one :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing details on your brothers cool car too, Lou
Another great video Lou. Might I say when you go off camera Lou your voice is lost or hard to understand. Just a observation. Keep up the great work 👍
Hi David, Yes, when at a "live" car show my audio is going to have a challenge vs a visit to a individuals car on site at there location, Thank you for the kind words on the video, Lou
Wow... Talk about Royalty... I'm glad it made it all these years...
Good point. So fun to see and video a car like this for you, Lou
Lou Costabile Yessir,I wish I could have been there with you. Hahahaha,I'm happy you got the footage and the opportunity to be close and sit in perhaps the Rarest Car in the word. Thumbs Up.
Wonderful car
Hi Rob Mitchell, I like this one too :-) Lou
I think I have some of those 68 Shelby promotional photos showing the convertible. Very interesting.
Those are cool photos.
The '68 Shelby (coupe & convert) had "factory" padded roll bars. The coupe had a "three point" shoulder belt attached to the top of the bar, while the convert. had a conventional shoulder belt attached to the side of the bar!
Talk about a score. A rare pony car indeed.
Very fortunate to video this car and share with the Viewers, Lou
From my perspective, this car couldn't be a 68 because all 1968s got side marker lights (Shelbys included), thanks to Federal requirements. 67s obviously didn't have them, although both years shame the same body.
Another "giveaway" would be the steering column. Stock '67 Ford products got away with a non-energy absorbing column (despite Federal regs) since they had a huge padded hub in the center of the steering wheel that was supposed to protect the driver from getting skewered by the column in a front end collision. 68s finally got an energy absorbing column (along with a new steering wheel design). This car's wheel is non-Ford, so examination of the column itself would be needed to reveal whether it has a safety section or not.
Hi Chana Hershkowitz, Thank you for viewing and sharing. Question for you, did you enjoy seeing the car? or not really for you? Lou
Of course I enjoyed seeing it!
Chana Hershkowitz Actually, the early 1968 Mustangs did not have side marker lights. I do not know the details of exactly when they began to have them, but since new regs tend to start on Jan 1, I believe that all 1968 Mustangs that were built before Jan 1, 1968 did not have the side marker lights. Or, at least most of them anyway.
The dead giveaway was NO roll bar in the '67, ALL '68s had roll bars standard! The "high beam" headlights in the grille were rectangular and spread apart in the '68. Also the tail lights in the '68 were three section with chrome trim separating the sections and the interior of the '68 had a center console housing oil and amp gauges. There was very little interior chrome in the '68, but a LOT of fake wood!
Amazing!
;-)
Glad you enjoyed this one :-) Me too.
looks like the prototype for the California Special,Ford badged, but made by Shelby.
Hi TheFokker03, I can see why you'd say that. Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Beautiful car absolutely stunning. Bottom line I am still confused, is it a real “deal” 1967 Shelby G.T 500?
Hi Will Davis, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
yes it is the real deal, the ONLY 1967 Shelby Convertible.
Is that a smog pump?
Yes, the convertible, #00139 was ordered and built with both emissions (smog) and AC. Though the third ordered, it's the first car to leave the factory with that complex configuration (or 23 built), since the first two orders (#00100 and #00131) were modified to delete the emissions before being built.
Thats very interesting thanks
Hi Jay, I see Brian answered your question "yes" it is, Lou
WOW :)
Happy to receive a "WOW" from you :-)
@@loucostabile 😀
Wrong! The 1964 Chevrolet Impala 409 and the all aluminum ZL-1 Impala were equipped with dual four barrel carburetors. Not just the Ford Cobra side oiler 427 and the Chrysler 426 Hemi cars.
He said pony car, idiot, Impalas are not pony cars.
Hi Ronald Walther Jr., Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge. Hope you see many more cars on this UA-cam Channel you enjoy. Please subscribe, and hit the "bell" so you can see all the cars when they are uploaded on this UA-cam Channel, Lou
I mean if he bought it in 2009, why didn't they hit up Carol Shelby directly when he was alive and ask what the deal with the car was.
Not sure.
Wonder where this car ended up..
....does someone else have it now?
🤤🤤🤤 but I have to say""No Offense luckily Shelby isn't alive to be embarrassed that what kind of crap Stangs are now being made"".. by the way anyone knows what else is written on those valve covers other than ""LeMans""?? Wish I could get one of those!!🤤🤤 Thank you Lou...
Hi Ckryse S, Thanks for viewing. On the valve cover on the right it says "COBRA Le Mans" You're welcome, Lou
My '68 was White and single 4bbl and don't i wish i had it today.
Hi Colin, Sounds like you had a great car :-) Hope you see many more cars on this UA-cam Channel you'll enjoy, Lou
@@loucostabile thanks Lou -- have watched and enjoyed many of your videos -- always top drawer. The GT500 brought back some especially fond memories tho as u can imagine. Keep em comin ........
Glad you're along for the ride :-)
My neighbor had a green one w/black convertible top. So that must be the only red one, or its the same car destroyed with red paint.
Hi 5 O'clock Shadowbanned, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your neighbors car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing. Hope you see many cars on this Channel you enjoy! Please Subscribe, and hit the "bell" so you can see all the cars when they are uploaded on this UA-cam Channel, Lou
Milpitas assembly line!
Thanks for viewing & sharing.
easy , one of one rare 1967 shelby mustang convertible
Happy to share this rare treat with you :-)
Lou, Something just isn’t right as Ford had a strick policy that no 427 H.O. Car could be offered with air conditioning (and it wasn’t a space issue but likelihood that the engine would throw the air conditioning belt off the pulley) Even Shelby had to follow this rule. In other words, this car cannot exist. If you ever run into this gentleman again, please ask him to explain this.
Hi Brady Dog, Thanks for sharing your knowledge, and if I see him again, I'll ask, Lou
@@loucostabile -Thx Lou, I can’t wait to hear his answer to this puzzling problem.
It is a 428 Police interceptor, it is not a 427.
great story but i can barely hear the guy.
Hi ZaggarG, Difficult to get great audio at a car show, however you do the best you can with what you have, and this was the result. Lou
I thought Craig Jackson had that car?
Thanks for viewing and sharing.
@@loucostabile Beautiful car!
I fell into a big bucket full of gold coins. End of story.
:-)
i can see the guy is ready to send it to barret jackson
Nothing against Barrett-Jackson, but.....NEVER for sale! Don't mistake my knowledge, enthusiasm and desire to share automotive history as a "sales pitch."
Well there's no way he can go with Barret Jackson first he's an auctionist and more than likely he would get some out of it (commission) plus I know a lot of people in Scottsdale AZ and they don't like to get them from him bocuse he would sell it for More they rather go directly to the car owner an get it for the price he wants not Barrett's price.
Not this one :-)
Now I know why fort knox was emptied out.
To make way for what has real values to it.
Thank you for viewing & sharing.
Not only could GM or Chrysler do so much more, the most important is they could not Touch Ford on the Track, talking drag racing that is, the Hemi was blown up through Marketing because Chrysler was dying and they had to do something for them and GM, well they were always just okay to be in the Race, now look at GM with all the LS packages, they are spanking Dodge and Ford, also they are not getting the attention that Ford and Dodge are getting, because GM has got it going on... PERIOD!!!
Hi Edwin Storz, What do you think of this Shelby GT 500 Mustang Convertible? Lou
I am a Ford Man at heart Lou...........
Yes Sir, there is something about the Prestige that Ford has always held, not even snobby or trash talkers, it just has always shown up in the Ride!
Lou, a big Thanks for all the work!
Hi Edwin Storz, Don't let trash talkers bother you, stay focused on the "Blue Oval" and have fun with the Fords on the Channel :-) Regarding "all the work!" I'm having fun and you're welcome, Lou
what about r code 63 1/2 galaxies i think that guy is wrong with his statement.
Unless Ford built less than one 1963 Galaxy, I stand by my statement. Enjoy a challenge... just bring your documented factory production figures to the dance and we can compare totals. It's really hard to build less than one....
the earliest not the only one = build less than one - WHAT !- so that is what i am saying - earliest not the only one .
Sorry Ronnie. I must have misunderstood. Since I made a lot of statements, which one was I wrong about? Something about the earliest? BTW, I love the 427 dual quad Galaxie --especially the convertible!
thank you and i should have listened more closly = super fantastic car and a great job by a true gentleman and great historian - with great thanks .
Always good to have a second set of eyes (and ears) to keep us researchers on the right path. Thanks!
they guy is full of it saying this is the rarest car in the world come on is a mustang
Rarity is based on factory production run in any company, and if it is the only one that is factory produced, well that would make it rare.
Actually it's a Shelby American G.T. 500, and it's the only G.T. 500 convertible ever ordered, serialized and built by Shelby American. Once Shelby put their VIN on the car, it was no longer a Ford product. However, if you did want to discuss this car's rarity based on how it was born on the Ford San Jose assembly line, it would be the first and ONLY Mustang convertible ever built with dual-quads atop a 428 cu-in FE motor. Shelby American referred to this as the "8-Cylinder Ford Corba 8v." (note: 8v = 8 venturi, aka 2x4bbl, aka dual quads). By what criteria do you calculate rarity Lino?
so you really think this is the rarest car in world , thats what the guy said . of course the car is cool and rare but to say is rarest car in the world is ridicoulus to say the least
Agreed the car is cool, and I think it's a fair validated statement being the rarest based on production number (only 1), but ok, I'll ask, how would you describe the car since it's the only one produced?
Lino, this is your second post dismissing the car's rarity, so please tell us how you, as a veteran car collector, automotive historian, or expert gauge rarity. The rest of us gauge rarity using a minimum of five (5) criteria: Year, Make, Model, Body Style and Engine -- as it was born. So, please share with us your formula...
Brian Styles i never said the car is not rare ,just not the rarest car in world as you said
I get it Lino. It's such a gorgeous car... the rational mind can't grasp why only one was ever built. You need to understand it wasn't Shelby's "plan"... it was simply "fate." The fact remains, that only one was built, so if you can somehow show us a production car that's somehow rarer than ONE, I'll tell the world that car's story instead! Perhaps you know of a "1-of-0.75"? LOL.
Brian Styles the are a lot of one of one cars out there some are worth a lot of money
Ok Lou-that is a special car(much nicer than that vette)- but the rarest car in the world?Quite a statement to make
Hi skulljer, Glad you think this one's special. That's good enough for me, Lou
Lou Costabile - Hey,but for him to say its "the rarest car in the world " (Im trying to be nice) is something, you can think but dont say it in public at least-and so you dont think it- There is an old Ferrari gto thats documented as such that I saw auctioned off in Monterey. Can we sue him for fraud, lol? I keep forgetting these posts are old
