The Biggest Week of the Year!

- With Erin being back on her Crust Bombora and the sun finally coming out I got a decent amount of miles in on my bicycles for the first time all year(over 150). I rode the Raleigh Tamland 2, Surly Midnight Special and my homemade Miyata single speed. All the bikes, all the likes. We even met up with Ben on his All City mountain bike on Sunday. Oh yeah - there was a night trail ride in there too - out in Kent. ....not to mention craft beers and coffees....
Cheers!

Edmond playing with the zip tie was my favorite part
mine too 🐈⬛
OMG, everytime you make that swirl with the camara I'm thinking youre crashing, even though I know, it's your signature thing 😄
Ha! I never even thought of that!
Me too, every time I think “sh*t!” then “oh yeah, we’re good” 😂
In upstate New York not great designated bike paths. But some roads have wide shoulders. I will admit I wish there was more of a gravel bike community here. Thank for your videos.
It was decent when we stayed in the Hudson Valley last year - Kingston - but I haven't been riding farther upstate.
Cheers!
Cuyahoga County did a connectivity study in my city a few years back and suggested routes like these, through lower traffic/speed neighborhoods and called them "Bike Boulevards". The city hasn't implemented them yet, but I am a sucker for a good alliteration. 1:35
All these different funded studies with no action....
Everyday, we ride. Weather? Yeah, but we still ride. No windshield or defrost/heater needed and we are better for it. 🚲💪
Heck yeah!
Nice bike day...
Not to cold ❄️☃️...
Hot coffee and cake day...😅
Thanks Tim. Yep , Edmond is a natural !
The camera loves him!
We have signed routes also.
I kind of wish we had more - it was helpful when I first started riding.
Nice ride 🙂
Thanks!
Yes, bike routes where cars almost hit you with their mirrors.
The one I was on is a decent one - really seems like drivers are aware of it. Could be that this one links the bike trails.
We have signed bike routes in Manhattan, KS. Legend has it the original plan was to put in traffic choke points with bollards that let bikes go through but would stop drivers. Drivers kept running over the first bollards that were installed, so now they're just signed routes with the same amount of traffic.
When I first came across these I was just cruising around and started following them - not they are part of some of my routes. I hope they help in the way that cars get used to or at least expect to see cyclists on these roads?
I live in Waterloo, Indiana and want to take amtrak to Albany NY and ride the Hudson River trail to Manhattan. I never did anything like that and would think it would be safer with more then one person. Thanks for the great video. Stay safe and God bless
Thanks!
Yes - there is a decent amount of road on that route - they are fairly chill roads but I always feel safer riding with more than just myself - I feel more visible. I haven't felt uncomfortable at all through there crime-wise - even the parts of the Bronx were comfortable.
I love going out on my weekly ride with you guys. Edmund is so sweet.
I love him! 🐈⬛
Great times. I rode with my bike friend this week(once) and im feeling the joy still
Nice! I felt so much better having friends around last week - motivated me to get out!
Not a lot of bike routes where I live so I try to take side roads, back roads when I can to avoid being hit. Drivers are too distracted nowadays
That is in essence what these are - but just marked. It helped me when I first started and didn't know how to plan routes that well. Now I know how to avoid the busy streets around town.
Double Train! 😊Surly Getting a lot of road time. Jealous. Bike shop photos were rad ☮️
Gonna swap the wheelset and try it with some faster tires soon!
Liverpool is Catching up. Very similiar to yourselves.
We have signed bike routes around town here, but I’m not sure if they provide any additional safety for cyclists. I just ride where I want to go. I’ve usually got a route that keeps me away from the busiest traffic arteries.
That is what ours seem to do. They were helpful when I got back into cycling and didn't know how to plan my routes as well. They have also painted the roads in better ways on some - the key being no center lines - studies show cars are more comfortable passing with clearance when they don't have to cross lines. I think they could be helpful for people from out of town too? Or maybe just the simple fact that cars see them so expect cyclists to be there?
In my town we have bike routes
Tim, quick question. Have you done the great Mecca known as Ragbrai? I’ve recently started following you, and thought ‘this guys gotta join my crew for Ragbrai.’
I haven't.
Couple things: it is a really long way from here and my friends and I like to plan our own trips.
I know people absolutely love it and I never rule anything out - just isn't way up on the bucket list for me at the moment.
great concept, impeccable execution!! careful you're getting awful close to art. as in the making of great art. Thanks
Thanks!! I think the final ingredient is more time! I'd love to put even more wrok into the edit eventually.
Met a nurse on Sunday that is working in the children’s hospital looking after my daughter down in Perth West Oz, she is from Columbus spoke to her about you and Akron.. Bit of useless information for you Tim….😂😂
Thanks "like and subscribe!"🤷🏻♂️ I'm actually hoping to get back down to Columbus to ride with Dylan soon.
Shout out to my home town, North Hill (where is that mural?) I am not a big fan of bike lanes, but I will use them when necessary to ride busy roads. Some in Cbus are sketchy. Read a recent study that they may increase accidents - theory that cyclists might feel false sense of security. I can't site the study, though. Would love to see the Silver Lake connection feed south into cfo and akron to connect to freedom trail somehow. When will we see Edmond in the bike basket for a ride? Looking forward to hearing more on the lane proposal - and overall attitude of the leaders and attendees. Akron chamber of commerce needs to give you and DRBW a key to the city.
Bad bike lanes are bad bike lanes - they are not an argument against bike lanes. Those studies are off base. Of course the more people that do something the more chance of an accident occurring - hardly an argument against infrastructure. If there were no roads there would be no car accidents - so what?
This plan is fantastic - North Main is a road that has no traffic problems and one lane in each direction with a turning lanes, removing traffic lights will make traffic flow even better. I almost never ride North Main because it is sketchy - I will often with a bike lane and more controlled traffic. This is pretty much going to happen - there just might be some minor tweaks.
It was a typical mixed bag at the meeting - many people liked it and then there are the same people who hate any change. One guy complained about more trees 🤷🏻♂️
There are a number of ideas and unfunded plans to connect more of the trails - Veterans Trail would help(what we now call the route 8 gravel) but I do make a loop of the two all the time - just use neighborhood cuts.
Thanks - cheers!
@@TimFitzwater Thank you! And, yes, I actually do prefer a bike lane if I don't have a dedicated trail to get me where I'm going. So, the guy was against more trees? Thanks, too, for being present at that meeting. Good to hear about Veterans Trail - I think you've clued me in before about that.
How does the Surly compare to your Raleigh and Gunnar?
I am going to make a whole video about that but in a nutshell it has more of a road geometry with much quicker handling.
@@TimFitzwater for asphalt and maintained gravel roads, those handling characteristics wouldn’t be bad. I would think they might make rougher, hillier terrain a little more challenging.
@Cycling_Brian that is exactly what Otis said - he doesn’t like it on gnarly descents.
I can't sleep smh
😬
We have painted signs on the road that are just partial bike lane symbols at this point due to cutting them in half when cutting up the street for gas or water line maintenance. Its really a pathetic effort in my city.
Ha! So typical.
