    In a way, Indonesia is more tolerant that western countries. Many christians and Hindus can reach very high positions, including currently a coordinating minister, which is a bit like prime minister, armed forces chief of staff, governors etc. Also, there are no anti-christian parties that regularly burn bible, unlike in the west. Indonesia is a perfect blend between modern lifestyle and modesty.

    LOL Indonesians definitely have plenty of those things 😂 All three of them and then some. It’s amazing how some people can visit a country ONCE and think they know everything about it, and worse, spread misinformation. That law draft is not great, but it’s not as simple as you might think it is. You would need to get reported by a spouse or an offspring or a parent, which is why this wouldn’t concern tourists. It’s still not great and many Indonesians don’t agree with it which is why we’re pushing for it to be repealed.
    Sure, we need to improve on the issues of LGBTQ+ and women’s rights, but that’s not an issue specific to Indonesia. You Americans have never had a female president, we already had one. All across Indonesia we have female governors, mayors, etc, all who are directly elected through democratic voting system (a corrupted one, but still). Indonesian women have always been powerful, even before independence we had had regnant queens long before women were allowed to rule any European country.
    Public transportation in Indonesia is not separated by genders. Women can sit wherever they want, but they also have the option to sit in women-only section. There’s no men-only sections, and even in the mixed section nobody dares to fight women over seats because most of them are more domineering. Non Muslim-majority countries like Japan also have this, why not criticize them? You’ve been there before, so you know that women sit on both mixed section and women-only section. Why mislead people into thinking Indonesia is separating men and women? We’re not some Middle Eastern country.
    Traveling is supposed to open up your horizon, but it wouldn’t help if you already have a preconceived idea of what a country is even before visiting.

    • @itchyfeetonthecheap
      @itchyfeetonthecheap  Рік тому +7

      Thanks for your comment. I didn't mean to say that transportation is separated by genders. And I wasn't criticizing it. I'm sure there's a very good reason for a women only section. I've never been to Japan, but India had something similar.
      For the record, I'm from Canada. We've had 1 female prime minister, but she wasn't voted in.

      @@itchyfeetonthecheap I’m sorry to assume that you’re from the States, but I stand my other points. You are set on the stereotypes you have about Muslims, and you won’t stop at nothing to prove that Indonesia is just like any other country in the Middle East when in fact if you know anything abut the very fabric of our society, you’d find that we have more things in common with cultures in mainland Southeast Asia and also Pacific Islands. My concern is with just enough people thinking like you, it will be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

    Kawah Putih (White Crater) 0:33 is so cool, I loved Java so much but I didn't once feel worried about the religion, they are super respectful of other religions, but yeah Bandung was my biggest surprise due to Lembang and Kawah Putih being pretty areas to visit, next time I will go visit more of the East Java parts as admittedly I spent half my time in Bali and the other half in Jakarta/Bandung area last time I went :D
    Yeah I was super surprised with the metal detectors at the malls in Jakarta but as you said it's just part of the measures to combat the terrorism from the past, which if anything just makes you feel even more safer, but man the price of alcohol at Braga street in Bandung is insane, in Bali it was cheaper, and for those who love beer the local beer (Bintang?) is super cheap.

    Pretty good, honest sum-up, but you're a bit harsh on some points eventhough you soften them up with your sense of humor.
    Regarding safety, I think instead of reading the stats of terror attacks from wikipedia, it would be better if you talked about how you felt and what your experience was. Did you get harassed ? Did you get mugged ? Did you get intimidated ? That sort of things.
    The terror attacks in recent years are much smaller and targeted toward the police. And I think the threats are continually diminishing.

    Whether they like it or not, we as Muslims never care about them and we remain open to the outside world. Many people sell pork in Indonesia, like in Java, there are lots of pork restaurants and there are no problems. Then terrorism in Indonesia, which according to the Indonesian survey is the highest, is wrong, If terrorism in Indonesia is indeed high, perhaps there will no longer be any Christian, Hindu, Buddhist or Confucian religions in Indonesia. Then regarding sex, in my opinion, not all foreigners understand or know about these rules, but in Indonesia there are still many women who work in sex, some are open and some are closed. Apart from that, there is also one city where sex is legal.

    Being a muslim country...maybe... but turkiye and malaysia have many tourists. Turkiye has more than 40m, malaysia more than 13m moving to 16m. They are muslim majority as well. Religion does not play a big part.
    It is just the tourism packages and people experience. Indonesia relies heavily on bali and the surrounding islands like lombok, komodo. Their places are congested and big cities polluted.
    Turkiye too has terrorist attack like indonesia. But people still visit ephesus, cappadocia, pamukkale etc etc. And it has european and asian vibe.
    Malaysia has multi cultural vibe with amazing food. Nature is fantastic with our oldest tropical rainforest in the world.

  • @TheMagicofJava
    @TheMagicofJava Рік тому +9

    The west reminding Indonesia that it is Muslim, is causing it to become more like the west's view of what a Muslim country should be like. Whilst it is true that less than 1% of Indonesians are formerly classified as Buddhist (all Indonesians must have a religion which is listed on their ID card), Buddhist teachings from the Majapahit era still dominate. But even this is a western abstraction. What are called Majapahit Buddhist teachings are often a mixed Hindu/Buddhist Shaivite philosophy merged with animism. Indeed, Majapahit religious beliefs are still dominant in parts of Java, often merged with Islam in Kejawan.
    This is the reason why when you scratch the surface Indonesia is a lot like other SE Asian countries. Indeed, when we visit Bangkok I am struck by how the beliefs and practices have so much in common, as opposed to so different; there is even a Javanese Masjid (Mosque) in central Bangkok.
    I recognise that you are simply following the west's hegemony in dividing the world into competing religions and do think you were very fair in your assessment of Indonesia. But we all need to recognise that if we keep calling a child naughty and treating it like it is, it will become naughty. Worse still this plays into the hands of the minority of Muslim who really do conform to what the west thinks a Muslim should be like.

      You clearly didn't watch the video, or just didn't understand it. Yes, I talk about the concerns people might have, but that's not bad mouthing it. I end the video praising Indonesia and telling people not to be concerned about the problems I brought up. There are plenty of channels doing what you want - everything is roses, turning a blind eye to potential concerns, 'look at us were having the time of our lives constantly'. This isn't that channel.
      Also, I'm Canadian.

    whatever your opinion, good or bad. At least most Americans like and feel at home in this country and appreciate a country's culture more. It would be better for the American government to learn tolerance with Indonesian society. And Sweet home Alabama 🙃

    Your review about Indonesia apart Bali are so bias just because you now live in non Muslim South East Asian country... If you want to know more exactly what really Indonesia is... Go, live and life there for long term not just as tourist for two weeks and then you feel that you already knew whole about Indonesia... That's suck!!

    Terrorism is always a threat anywhere in the world, no matter what religion involved. As far as I know sex before marriage is more to something taboo thing however in reality I’VE NEVER HEARD A SINGLE PERSON THAT IN PRISON BECAUSE OF PRE MARRITAL SEX.. 😂😂 and I am a 49 yo Indonesian living in Jakarta. It would be a different story if somebody is reporting a sexual abuse or somebody being reported for having a love affair after marriage involving government official, they can be in prison for quite long time..

      Sure terrorism is a threat anywhere, but it's more of a threat in a country that has had a lot of terrorist attacks.
